Mike Mills' background singing is one of the best things about this great song. Still funny that some people think this is a love song, and some actually play it at their weddings.

I hope I never attend a wedding with that song playing in the background, it'd be too weird, almost uncomfortable

There is something very mystical and transendant about REM's songs. It reaches decades into the future and stirs in people something that is often dormant.

For me this song is like about one looking for love. Possibly having too much of love, but not completely sharing it, maybe for a fear. Sadly, not appreciating love given by others, and all anguished, regreting for such behaviour, yet running in this circle. This song became hit not without the reason. Not all songs have to be sweet melodies. Love R.E.M. for the diversity of themes of their songs and how the whole song or a line of it can have a big and often different meaning for many people.

Bernie Smith I saw them twice on the Document tour, which was a total trip because::: They had JUST exploded into a bigger level of radio hits, so we saw them in a large arena in Cleveland (18,000ish)... Where many in attendance were youngsters who only knew a couple hits; and many sat looking bored for 90% of the show. The large arena crowd lacked excitement. THEN we decided to see them when they came around to a small arena on the _campus_ at Dayton... The crowd was on FIRE, knowing every song. Amazing show!

I'm normally not too big on live cuts-they almost never sound like the record! But this is great, considering that! All live stuff sounds great in person, but taking it to a video or album takes a special talent to maintain the live feeling! Not a bad effort here! Classic!

The 1st time I heard it, I was surprised R.E.M. could write such song. The line 'a simple prop to occupy my time' was really offensive, conflicting to the 1st line that makes a listener to be ready to hear a sweet song. I was like: how can someone you love be a simple prop? Kind of love song, kind of not. When R.E.M. play it live, it seems kind of appropriate song: it's sung to this audience, then to other and so on. It's very impressive hearing the whole audience sing it along with the band.

The guitar is supposed to be very dominant in this kind of rock. It's like the sounds that Tom Petty makes with his guitar. Fantastic song...and fantastic performance. Rock 'n Roll ain't supposed to be perfect.

gordy hanson Interesting- -both tom petty and REM consider The Byrds as a primary influence
@AmyDSRQ9 жыл бұрын
Often misinterpreted as a love song, this is just the opposite. Michael Stipe describes this song as about using people over and over. It's deceptive because it could be a love song until the line, "A simple prop to occupy my time." Songfacts
@matthewstetson7118 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you'd think that there wouldn't be so many stories about couples having this as their very own special love song but people hear what they wanna hear. Never liked it much because it sounds to me like formula REM and the lyrics are very uninspiring. And the twist of 'Another/a simple prop' did not save it for me. I suppose I was hoping they would 'make it big' with a better tune. This made it into the Top Ten and that still astonishes me.
@earlcampbell89274 жыл бұрын
Amy D Gotta wonder about the lack of brain power in someone who thinks it’s a love song. “... the one I’ve left behind... a simple prop...”
@dez19893 жыл бұрын
People often don't really listen enough. Most hear "one I love" and they just go with it. People blow my mind. Michael often stated that this song is a very vicious song. Most people are simply pop music lovers. They aren't deep enough to dig in to a song. Even though you don't have to dig in too deep to know that this one cuts. But to pop music lovers this sounds poppy, slightly melancholic yet fluffy to them. However that Rickenbacker that Peter plays can cut to the bone.

A simple song with nothing much to it no Deep lyrics seemingly no deep meaning but stands the test of time and sounds fresh no matter when you hear it.
@earlcampbell89274 жыл бұрын
Ray A Maybe not deep, but strangely satisfying for its shock value. Who else would write those lyrics... “you were just a prop” But aside from lyrics, the 4 instruments (including voice) were arranged so well in this band... (I never really gave a crap about words😁)
@josefinebliss2801 Жыл бұрын
You'd have to be shallow and lazy not paying attention if you think it has no meaning. It's not even hard to decipher. It's about using people over and over... seeing them as nothing but props... Stipe has even said so himself because somehow there are people taking it as a love song. I guess a song only needs to contain the word "love" for people to think it's a love song.
