It sounds like they just wanted time off from a colicy baby and chose not to warn the babysitter as she'd have backed out or charged more.

If I was in the situation of the babysitter, after 45 minutes of mom being late, id call an ambulance an CPS. If you are told your kid is super sick and dont come running ASAP, you shouldnt have a child.

For the first story: stop being a doormat, make sure you have evidence that supports your story, and threaten to call the cops for child abandonment or something. This goes for anyone in this kind of situation. If someone keeps sending you their kids to watch when you've repeatedly told them no, especially if they're demanding it be done for free, threaten to call the cops. If they don't stop, actually call the cops. That's the only way some people will learn.

First story: This woman was never looking for a free tutor, she was looking for a free babysitter. Take rSlash's advice and turn her away at your door. If she doesn't stop, report her to the police for invading your privacy. Second story: It's fair that they had to pay up, but people like this will never learn from their mistakes and likely ignore their sick baby again. That clearly called for CPS and police involvement due to serious child neglect and attempted fraud. Let them taste the _real_ consequences of their narcissism. Third story: Never underestimate the stubbornness of someone who has been pampered and played favorite by their own parents for their entire lives, given everything they want at a dime and never faced the consequences of their actions before. Of course EA would double down on her court statement, thinking that it would be enough to rule the case in her favor, because she just doesn't know better. Bet her parents probably approached OP's mom after that with a mix of berating her for "setting their daughter up" and begging her to revoke the court sentence or ask for a bail, knowing what entitled parents can be like. Fourth story: In their defense, going to Auchwitz would be like an amusement trip filled with fun and joy for people who are hardcore sadists. And I wouldn't put it beneath entitled people to be just that; finding joy in other people's suffering. Fifth story: I would bet with either what rSlash said, or the mother was doing everything she could to make her daughter's wedding as awful as possible. In the latter case, she'd be even more of a butthole, regardless if she did it out of jealousy or simply for her own twisted amusement.

Re: First Story When I was a teen and my siblings late elementary age (10 or 11) we had a neighbor who NEVER took care of her girls. They were maybe 6 or 7, too young to be friends with any of the kids at my house. But they were sweet and often ended up hanging out with us because I'd read to them or my sister would play school with them (my sister never was able to pass up a younger kid willing to obey her every word lol) when the girls were really hard up they would just sit and watch my brother play video games. At least a couple times a week their mom wouldn't be home at dinner time so my mom went ahead and fed them. They were SKIN and BONES and we had extra to share. This went on ALL SUMMER with the kids roaming the neighborhood and ending up at one neighbor or another's most days, never a parent to be seen. At some point it became clear to all the parents on our street that they were expected to keep an eye on these two tiny kids because the mom had to work or party or be hung over. Some parents tried to talk to her when the school year started but nothing really changed. Until November. At about 8:30pm one of the girls came over asking for a bandaid; she had a cut on her foot and her house was locked and her mom and her sister were gone. We asked her what time her mom had left. Being a little kid she had no idea but she told us it was before the sun went down. That kid seven year old kid was locked outside, barefoot, in shorts and a tank top in 55 degree weather and had been for three hours! We brought her in, bandaged her, fed her and waited. My parents put my siblings to bed and still we waited. At ten her mother still wasn't home so my parents had me take the girl into my room and read to her while they called Child Protective Services. They came at eleven and took that poor baby away. The look of betrayal she gave us haunts me still nearly 20 years later but it was the right thing to do. The cops came the next day and that mother hid on the roof while they took the other girl away and she was evicted shortly after that. I never saw those kids again but I think about her and her sister often and I hope that they found a good situation.

As a med student diarrhea and vomiting are two things you do not want on a 1 year old child. They easily get dehydrated and die. I'm sure the treatment for the child cost more than the 150 dollars they owed and that's why the dad got super upset. On top of the bad parenting of course.

The second last story is unfortunately a very common thing that happens when some tourists comes to Auschwitz, they will write their own names on the walls or on the wood on the beds, and take pictures of things that they're not allowed to take pictures off. They even steal sometimes, for example sometimes they steal barbwire from the fences and Steel Nails from the furniture. You would be surprised on how how disrespectful some people can be, but if you guys ever find yourself on eBay or some other sites where you can buy stuff, try to write Auschwitz and see how many people are selling nails and broken pieces off barbwire and other stuff from the place. Please be respectful for those of you who's going to visit the place one day.

For the baby one id have called 911 as soon as I figured out the mother wasn’t coming back. You don’t play with fevers and babies. Especially if it’s radiating that much heat. She can pick her child up at the hospital if they allow the child back in her custody.

In that first story the babysitter isn't to blame but she WAS utterly irresponsible. After the 1st call when the mother said she'd be there in 20. When that passed she should have immediately called for an ambulance. She allowed that child to suffer for HOURS for no reason.

THANK YOU. OP spent around 6 hours with a very sick child and did not attempt to call anyone else for help. If you can't reach the parents you don't just sit around and wait, you call your own parents, or a neighbour. OP claims it was a small town where people looked after each other, so why did they not try to get help for this kid?

Screw CPS, I would have had my mom take me to the ER (A&E, in this case, I think). In 6 hours with that much fluid loss, that baby might have DIED. It sounds like they were in the UK, too, so there's absolutely no reason that baby shouldn't have been taken to the hospital. As a medical worker, that story makes me rather distraught. We get a lot of stupid stuff in the ER...but that is something that would make us jump into action simply because of how serious it is. Once the baby was stable, THEN CPS should have been called...at the hospital. Thr fact she just threatened to leave the baby by itself after calling an ambulance is also appalling to me....you should never just leave a child out of annoyance and spite.

To be fair with the parents of the sick child, sometimes that kind of thing can set in VERY quickly. And if it WAS being 'passed off' as teething, they may not have realized the child was actually sick until it became full blown after they left. Heck, I have gotten sick like that before - not known until suddenly, over the course of a couple of hours, it flairs up and becomes bad. However, yes, as soon as it was reported the baby was absolutely very sick, they should have dropped everything and returned. The babysitter was wrong in letting it go so long. As soon as they realized the baby was sick and the parents were being so awful, they absolutely should have called an ambulance.

Apologies for the long story, but this was such a remarkable experience that I have never forgotten it and it cannot be truncated without losing the context of the experience. If you prefer Twitterscaped comments, please feel free to skip this. Not long after the Munich Olympics horror in 1972, my family was in that area with the intention of visiting Dachau. My Dad was a soldier and we lived in Germany. During our four years there we saw many War Cemeteries, sites of famous (infamous?) battles and other points of interest in western Europe. We got to Dachau and we were ill prepared for the emotional response we would all have to walking on ground that bore witness to such cruelty and suffering. There was an autobahn not far from the gates of Dachau and the day we visited the ste there was some sort of massive traffic jam either on the highway or nearby. Lots of car horns honking and frustrated voices. Despite all the noise, as we crossed into the footprint of the camp, we all experienced the most profound silence. No birds could be heard singing, there were no insects chirping in the summer heat. The overall feeling was one of incredible sadness and a total lack of life. Even our footsteps on the gravel paths did not register to us. We often talked about the experience. We had been told to read everything we could access in the library at school prior to the trip, so we had a significant perception of what went on there. We collectively assumed, as a family of four, that the place was so overwhelmingly evil (for lack of a better explanation) that we found our senses just shut down. I remember becoming aware of the noise from the autobahn becoming very loud and disturbing as soon as we exited the place. Towards the rear of the place, behind the Crematorium I think (iirc) I saw a very modern looking sweeping and curved staircase going downward below ground level. When I reached the last step I saw a wall of floor to ceiling glass with extremely modern furniture and fittings inside. I recall turquoise upholstery - just an incredible juxtaposition against the reconstructed gallows near the gate and the Crematorium so close by. For many years I wondered if I had imagined or dreamed about that room. Then I saw a video on KZbin that showed exactly what I recalled seeing. I cannot recommend highly enough that anyone who has the opportunity to visit one of these camps should go see it. The experience and my perceptions remain with me, 48 years down the road.

I agree with the footsteps thing, when walking on the gravel, I felt heavy and empty. I barely could lift my feet and just felt like I was going to cry any minute. the air feels tight and you just feel so impacted. I never want to feel like that again. About the room, I think I saw something resembling a staircase but since I was with the tour guide, I focused on following him and listening. but I do think there is something, but I'm not sure :)

I am glad you shared this. The more years that pass, as the survivors get older and pass away, the more important it is to keep passing on the stories to each other and the next generation. People have to understand the outcomes of these types of tyranny in a concrete way, not just in statistics. Its the only way to stay vigilant against a reoccurence of something similar. There are a lot of tales of war and atrocities in human history, but this one has always spoken to me the most somehow.

Many people believe that, should we choose to forget the lessons of the past we are doomed to repeat the situation.Because of my studies I refuse to allow the lost to be forgotten to the extent that I can prevent that, even if only accomplishing that by keeping the discussion going. In my lifetime I have sworn to keep the memories of two people alive, and I strive to keep my word. A little boy named John Ryan Turner was abused and neglected by his parents in military married quarters. The family lived just a couple of doors down from the home I lived in, although I had left military a couple of years before that little man arrived on the base. The second case was the sister of a lovely woman I had the pleasure of meeting. The sister and her family lived on Okinawa, and the sister was brutally raped and murdered after the American troops landed on the island near the end of WWII. The victims of the concentration camps and John Ryan /turner, as well as my friend's sister were effectively obliterated and there is a risk they may be forgotten. Not on my watch!

Our equivalent is called DOCS, and there is no way, if I would have called them, that they would have come to our town before the parent got home. We are hours away from anywhere.'

Last year I went to Buchenwald concentration camp with my then boyfriend (I am from Panama, he's German) and like others here, he mentioned how that part of their history is practically hammered into everyone from a young age. It was such a solemn place and definitely a different experience, but I saw whole families there, one even with their dog. The dog wasn't allowed in so the dad stayed outside and even the kids were respectful but it's because it is a cultural thing and they all know it's not to be forgotten. Maybe they were tourists.

As a mother that actually can happen with teething , however when that stuff happened you give them Tylenol and call the doctor immediately. Those are all symptoms of teething and I can understand how a 14-year-old wouldn't quite know that, but honestly I think the mother should have been more worried and and left more supplies

If someone tells me they are going to be 20 minutes when the place is a two minute walk away I will give them twenty minutes I may even give then an extra ten but I will make sure they know if they blow me off when they have sick baby I will call the ambulance FIRST and then call you. I don't waste time with sick babies. Also She never met this girl i don't care how close you are or how good the sitters refrences is. I would be asking my own questions like rates what to leave and give her a list of other people she can call if i ask to not be disturbed not that I would ever do that. MY kid i want you to call me frist. Cause i get a call on my phone that says Home or Sitter I am picking that call up. My parents took me to the Dachau Concentration Camp when I was very young. (Dad was USAF and we were stationed at Garmisch.) It was a family outing, but I don't think it was for "fun". Our family vacations were never the sit on the beach kind, rather they were filled with historical sites and museums. I can't imagine being that disrespectful, and I was a toddler when we went.

Chinese court is weird; why would they care who initially paid for the house if it was legally owned by the grandparents? If it's under their name, it should be their property and they can give it to whoever they like. They basically defended the use of a loophole to circumvent property hoarding laws. At around 6:18 my dad had something similar. My dad had a brother and my grandparents favored my uncle. They were always treating my uncle like the golden child and my dad like dead weight. My dad had to pay his own car payments in high school while my uncle got a new car and my grandparents paid for everything. My dad also didnt have much clothes while my uncle was practically swimming in clothes. One that really sets me off is that my dad wanted to go to college so bad and he was really smart too but he didn't havr the money for it and my grandparents wouldn't pay for his college but they got my uncle name brand clothes and everything while my dad desperately wanted to go to college. Let's just say my dad doesn't like his job now because he didn't get to do what he wanted because he couldn't go to college. Also for some reason my grandparents hated my mom and constantly was rude to her for no reason. I don't like seeing my grandma anynore since she was the main one, but my grandpa is dead. I liked seeing my grandpa but I still don't like my grandma. And she hasn't changed towards my parents either. She still treats my dad like dead weight even tho he visiys her and brings her gifts any chance he gets when we live 45 minutes away and my uncle barely visits her and lives like 10 minutes away. I have barely any contact with my uncle and I don't want any either cause he's just an alcoholic who barely works while my dad works his ass off for my family. I don't want pity I just wanted to talk about this.

While I was in university I worked for a resort that did a lot of wedding catering and saw a lot of astonishing mothers and mothers in law who thought that this was to be "their day." Some were so demanding and domineering that the weddings were actually cancelled! My favourite bride endured a couple hours of being overruled before her mother actually said that the cake had to be a particular shade of white (!) and said it was her day, after all. The bride responded, "Your day was when my father married you, and I wish he had chosen anybody else!" The head chef told me later that the bride had changed the date and moved the event without telling her mother. That was fifty years ago and I never saw the bride again, but she has been my hero for half a century!

The first story is clearly child endangerment. I understand that OP was young and did not immediately call an ambulance or least an in-house doctor (if any). However, the mother's decision of getting drunk and having dinner over the health of her own baby is not right. That baby could have easily dehydrated (from the vomiting and the diarrhea) and could have gone in a convulsive state, regardless of cause of sickness. I hope the mother learned a lesson and that the baby was better taken care of afterwards.
