You'd think they've done their research, but surprisingly sometimes they don't. Ex.: I had to point out to an old vegetarian that Campbell's alphabet soup is not vegan -they do make a vegetarian version though, at least according to the label. Speaking of labels maybe that's it: gelatin is gelatin always, but individual fun-size candy does not have all the info that's printed in the bag.

@@paigethedork9693 Yeah, in my house, candy tax was "Mom and Dad get all the crappy candy the kids don't want". And also, we'd buy a small bag of mixed candy the day after Halloween (since it's on sale) and then let the kids trade a piece of candy they didn't want for something from the bag. My son and daughter each had their favorites, and if their favorites were in the mixed bag, they'd sometimes trade a tier 2 candy for it. And then, the other kid would see the tier 2 candy, which was actually their favorite, and trade their own tier 2 candy for it. My son really liked chocolates and my daughter really liked fruit candy, especially gummies. This way, they each got more of their own favorites and didn't have to bicker about whether a mini-snickers was worth one or two small boxes of Dots. And usually the leftovers were cinnamon candies (which I love) and sour candies (which both I and my husband love) Win/Win/Win for everyone.

The last story is heartbreaking. I've lived a very similar story, except the kiddos were taken by Children's Services. (I'm crippled and couldn't take care of a baby and two toddlers) I finally had to take a stand and stop sending money grams to daughter and her jailbird man. I was finally convinced that every dollar I sent was financing bad behavior. They were homeless in the winter, and things were really hard. Eventually things began to turn around. She cooperated with court ordered programs, passed her UA's for the required time line, and they got the kids back. He began using again and she was serious about her sobriety and keeping her babies, so she was accepted into a shelter where she could live with her kids and continue improving her life. She's about 6 years clean now, so there's always hope that people can turn their lives around.

It's absolutely gut wrenching when it's your child and the guilt that's felt when you realize what you have to do is overwhelming. All I did was cry and blame myself. My comment was hopefully to encourage other moms and dads out there who might be living that same hell.

We organized it into piles, there was the pile where we threw stuff we didn't care about, and anyone could grab from that. Then in front of you you would organize a pile for stuff you were completely open to trading with, a pile for stuff you could be convinced to trade for, and a pile for stuff that you would never give away. Kids get surprisingly organized when trading is involved lol

As a "bigger than the average bear" guy myself, I walk. I even park further away in the store lots and get a bit of exercise in. Karen can use the exercise too. Or she can get one of the lighter folding mobility scooters, to ride between car and house.

My cat doesn’t like men in heavy boots. She doesn’t really like people in general, but she is really only scared of men in heavy boots. If it’s a friend who doesn’t know, I’ll just have the person take them off if they’re staying for a visit, and my kitty comes out of hiding after a few minutes of not hearing heavy steps. Male friends in normal shoes don’t make her freak out. I actually had one friend feel really bad for scaring her because she’d always been okay with him before, but he came over after work wearing heavy boots. I tried to tell him not to feel bad because he didn’t know. I guess I don’t really know how she’d react to women in work boots because it’s never come up before. Growing up, we had another kitty who was deathly afraid of brooms. All of our animals have been rescues, so there’s been quirks, but it varies by individual animal as to how specific their quirks are. It breaks my heart to know what some of them had gone through. Some of them get desensitized to the triggers fairly quickly after they learn that they’re safe now. I hope OP’s dog recovers quickly, but it’s understandable if there’s a lasting fear.

One of the few animals that isn't a rescue, but my dog hates really loud men and for some reason Brooklyn accents. When we took him to the vet one time for shots we didn't know they had gotten a male doc until we got called to the back to calm my poor dog down. Otherwise his only problem is his skull is like a cinder block and he has a bad habit of swinging his head around when he's excited and he has a bad habit of teething on arms that we've never been able to break him of. He doesn't bite enough to break skin but it is annoying.

About the driveway story: if in the US, and the street is zoned residential, lady can get her doctor to fill out paperwork with DMV for a handicap placard or license plate, and then apply to the municipality for a handicap parking spot designated only for her in front of her home, provided she doesn't have her own driveway (which she doesn't, obviously).

exercise is good for that but you need to have a balanced diet first for it to really work. and a lot of people become really fat because they already have a disability. as a chronic pain patient with some fat, the main thing that got me to lose weight was the lifestyle change of balancing out my diet better. exercises are really good for helping with my pain, but it doesn't do as much for losing weight. but also since she's obese walking might not be the best exercise for her current body, but that's why it's best to go to an understanding physician to get the least damaging exercises for her body

@@damien678 Wrong on the medical-issue related obesity. Most Americans are fat by choice and the type of food that we sell/eat here in the United States, as well as prioritize in terms of pricing. Medical-related issues don't help, and I know several who are obese due to medical. But that definitely is not the leading cause for obesity. It really does come down to dietary habits, what we eat, and exercise. Most of the food we eat regularly is definitely bad for us in the US.

Dog Story: If that had need my dog that was hurt, that Brat would have found herself getting slammed THROUGH a brick wall... Hurt my friends or family and I turn into something that would terrify Satan himself... After the Vet Visit, I'd be calling a Lawyer to Sue Karen for the Vet Bills and medication my dog needs and then I'd go to the Police Department and make a Formal Complaint against the Officers for not Charging Karen with Animal Abuse. Children under a certain age (it varies by State and Province) are the responsibility of their Parent/Guardian and the Parent/Guardian is Legally Liable for their actions, so if a 9 year old steals and wrecks a car for example, the 9 year olds Parent/Guardian is Charged with Auto-Theft and Destruction of Property instead of the 9 year old...

We got like 90 to 95% of our candy and she just got a small amount. I have a knee disability that makes it hard to walk long distances, so I go to the pool and do water walking. Being in the water means my knees don’t have to bear much weight, but do get some resistance going forward.

It's one thing if a neighbor asks you if they can use your driveway, and they are given times when they can. Like say "I won't be home during these times, so you can use it, but I will need it by ." That last story, that is damn near an exact duplicate of my niece, Rebecca. Lies to get money, does drugs, refuses to go to a shelter when offered a way out, she's gotten into the "bad girl" life and has become a serious karen and there's nothing I can do to help her becuase she refuses to listen to a word anyone says. It's her way or the highway. So all I can do is let her do what she wants with her life and pray she doesn't die young. The driveway story: If the lady has that much trouble walking she should get a pair of canes, or a walker, or a rolling walker. Any of these will offer her some help with walking. Some years ago my knees were getting bad. I did look into canes and rolling walkers, but didn't like the models I saw, so I held off for a few more years. Finally, when I found myself holding onto the furniture and walls to walk around my home, I started looking into walking aids again. I did some research online, and found out the best type of cane for my needs. I bought a pair, and they were a big help. Unfortunately tho, my knees got even worse, so a couple of years ago I did some more research online, and found the right kind of rolling walker for my needs. This helps even more than the canes, but I still use those in tighter spaces. I do have previous knowledge of rolling walkers through my mother who used one for a few years until her death years ago. I saw how much hers helped her, so I was glad when I got my own. It has really been a big help in getting around. Quick tip for anyone buying one: Make sure you buy one that is wide enough for you to walk between the back wheels. If you buy a narrower one you will have to lean too far over to keep in control and in contact with the rolling walker. This puts a strain on the back, legs, and arms, and isn't a very safe way to walk. When walking between the back wheels you don't have to bend over much, and are able to maintain much better contact and control of the walker, so it's much safer to use, and easier on you body. Sorry to go so far off topic, but mobility issues are important to me, so I can get a little carried away about it sometimes. When I was younger I used to walk and hike a good bit, and really miss it, but because my rolling walker helps me move around better it tends to bring back those old memories. Don't let any Karens get the best of you.

Story #1: OP is not the butt in my opinion. I have plenty of family and friends who do the candy tax garbage with trick or treating. They take their favorite candies out of the bags before the kids get to eat what's left. My rule is that my kids get to pick out a set amount for just them before anyone else gets to share in what remains. Example: 1/2 a shopping bag of candy...my kids pick 30 candy items from the bag that they don't have to share with anyone, goodie bags count as 1 item. They keep all drinks, microwavable popcorn, toys and jewelry...these don't count towards their pick from their bags. Their bags got checked for safety before they pick their personal treats. After they have their own personal stash picked the remaining candy goes into a big bowl for sharing with everyone. It's up to my children whether they eat candy from the sharing bowl and save their personal stash for later or go straight to their personal stash. I've actually had to put adults back in their lane before because they tried to claim their favorite candies from my children's bags before my kids got to make their selections and that's not how we do things with my kids. My kids love how we do things cause they get their favorites and the chance to trade with their siblings if they each have something the other wants. They also choose to eat from the sharing bowl and save their favorites for later without having to worry about being made to share those. LOL! Didn't take long for them to start picking the candy goodie bags either once they were old enough to grasp what we were talking about when we said those count as 1 item. If those have some candy they like and some they don't they still pick them so they get more of what they like and can trade the others with siblings or trade those ones with the sharing bowl if there are 1-5 they don't like and can't trade with someone else. 5 for trading from the sharing is a high enough number that their personal stash was always filled with only things they genuinely like. Just an idea for any parents or potential parents out there trying to think of a way to teach their children moderation, sharing, counting and not allowing yourself to be taken advantage of / conned. 😁

Candy Tax is a long standing tradition of parents. It's a way to nibble just a little, or make sure their children don't get sick or over eat their Halloween candy at once.
