33:03 What's funny about the lady being so emotionally invested in the color of her daughter's wedding dress is that a white wedding dress never symbolized purity. The tradition started with Queen Victoria, and it symbolized the fact that she was rich enough to wear a dress only once. Having a white cake with white frosting just meant you're rich enough to afford refined flour and sugar, which were still pretty expensive back then.
@amandafrederickson3764
@amandafrederickson3764 Жыл бұрын
I'd thought I heard the white dress was for economic reasons (promoting domestic fabric rather than imported silk - which, weighted silk is a fun rabbit hole if you're interested in spontaneously combusting dresses), so I did a quick search and apparently Queen Victoria's dress was white (made of local silk) primarily because it showed off her custom lace to best advantage (also locally produced, and the templates destroyed so it couldn't be reproduced), and she wore at least the veil on several future occasions. Other brides previously had occasionally worn white to show they were rich enough to have the dresses cleaned. None of which has anything to do with purity.

@@Sleipnirseight Money Pit house (sold to us by a snake that is trying to raise rents in the city and build houses that aren't up to code) owner here. It sucks since we aren't contractors and we've already thrown like 40k into this place. Sure it looks nice from outside now that we removed the rotting, lead painted outside. Still can't believe there was lead paint on this place until 2018. Please send help I hate it here and cry every day. We are now realizing all the pipes are breaking down under the house. Pipes keep breaking under sinks. We have rusty water and need to use filters. Crawl space makes it so we can never expand. Had to rewire the entire house because there was no grounding. Every appliance keeps breaking, and I'm pretty sure there is more dry rot damage in the kitchen. Had to remove a huge chunk of the living room wall and the entire floor in the bathroom due to it. They left a hole behind the oven that pests can get into, rats scratching in the walls, showing up dead in our house and will and apparently we somewhere have a hole that whole cats, racoons, and squirrels can get into in our roof. I can't tell you how unsafe I feel every day waiting for this place to fall down on me. With the wedding dress thing: I went to a Catholic High School and for graduation all the girls were made to wear white dresses. Guys were in tuxedoes. But one girl was pregnant and was barred from attending and the one they knew had a child, they made her wear purple. So it was called out to everyone in attendance at the church they held the graduation out that she wasn't "pure in God's eyes." Sickening to single out an 18 year old girl like this.

@@molybdaen11 Exactly. And it wasn't a sign of her purity, it was a sign of wealth & status. Wearing white is impractical in general, but even moreso during that time when the dresses were very long and the streets were not paved. When coal and wood burning were the only way to cook, or heat & light a home, and washing clothes was a much more arduous chore. A white dress would be ruined in a single day with the lifestyle of the majority of the population. The clothes of the working class had to be practical and sturdy. The frivolity of a dress that could only be worn once, or even only on special occasions, was not one most could afford. Wearing white meant you had a life of luxury where you didn't have to worry about getting dirty and could afford servants to do all those pesky household chores for you and to clean that dress when inevitably got stained.

The whole thing about 'no carnivores on my planet' baffles me, because that actually HAPPENED with this one island - there were no predators, and iirc sailors introduced rabbits so they could be eaten when/if people got stranded there (or something like that). After a few years the island was practically stripped bare of plantlife because there was nothing to stop the rabbits from overpopulating and eating everything. Exterminating all predators from an area is going to do nothing beyond destroy the environment in question.
@AJPemberton
@AJPemberton Жыл бұрын
There are numerous examples of herbivore population explosions after predators have been removed. In some cases, predators have been successfully reintroduced - like the wolves in Yellowstone Park - but it usually means we have to kill the herbivores ourselves. In reference to your rabbit example, both Australia and New Zealand have serious problems with rabbits. And also with the mustelids introduced to 'control' them. NZ also has deer and mountain goat populations that have no natural predators and have to be culled on a regular basis. And then we have vegan pet owners who try to make their predatory pet vegan. If you don't want your animal to eat meat, don't get a cat or dog! Someone so ignorant of basic animal physiology should not own pets. That said, a world that did not need species of animals to eat others to survive would be nice. Life is hard enough without having to worry if you are about to be torn apart and eaten by some predator.
@dmgroberts5471
@dmgroberts5471 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you let the predators die off in an area, you are going to need to start culling herbivores, or you're going to wind up with either a mass migration or mass starvation scenario. So...if you kill off all the wolves, you better be prepared to shoot Bambi's Mom yourself.

Even in just 20 years the changes in the price of housing is insane. In 2002 my parents move into a house about 30 minutes outside a small UK city - bungalow with 4 bedrooms, one ensuite, huge family bathroom (shower and separate bath), kitchen, massive living room, sunroom, utlity room, and detached gardage with a decent sized amount of land - ya could park 8 cars on the front driveway/space (they have since added 3 rooms/bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, to give an idea of the size/space). Earlier this year the house across the street from me sold for more than my parent paid. It was a semi-detached house, with a weird "half roof" upstairs, with 3 bedrooms all with some sloping ceilings, small family bathroom, average kitchen, two small-ish living rooms, small utility room, no garage and a drive way for one car. I am only a few years younger now than my parents where when we moved into that huge house and while super thankful to own any property, I am so quite bitter than I'll never be able to own a house like the one I grew up in! (I won't even inherit the family home as there are three kids, so most likely be sold and money spilt as I doubt any of us could afford to buy the others out!)

Oh man. I grew up with a palate too narrow for all my teeth. My canines grew in a separate row, pushed forward by my other teeth. When i smiled, my canines were clearly visible. Other kids in my elementary school stopped dressing up as vampires for Halloween because they'd look bad next to me who could rock it while still being able to speak normally. I did not need the goofy plastic teeth. I was so convincing, my friend group always put me in front while trick-or-treating. My parents brought me to an orthodontist before puberty to check if it would cause problems down the line and next thing I knew, my beautiful canines were girded in braces for the next 4 years. By the time they were freed from the braces, they were back in line with the others, and my smile became boringly normal. It's also extremely inconvenient when I actually feed. The "No mental health in public schools" actually upsets me. I grew up in an abusive/neglectful environment where I was shamed for my emotions. I had to struggle with deep and harmful feelings all by myself from a very young age, and if I told my mother about these feelings, I would be shamed thoroughly. She would make me feel like I was in the wrong for emotions and thoughts that I couldn't control. I even got banned from talking to my school counselors in middle school because, "Other people don't need to know our business." Even in my freshman year of high school, a year where 3 family members died, I was expected to show no emotions or allowed to talk about my thoughts. It was through my freshman health class during the maybe 1-2 weeks where they briefly went over various mental health conditions where I finally learned what depression was. I was aware of depression, but in the TV sense of depression was either dramatic and always a bummer to everyone around you or a sobbing mess, always clutching onto a glass of wine. Finally getting to learn *what* depression *really* was really opened my eyes and finally made me realize that the thoughts and emotions I experienced weren't a singular experience and that I was not alone. Sadly, coming out to my mom did not go as I hoped. She stated she knew I probably had depression, but she never sought treatment because she "didn't want you to be one of *those* children." If it weren't for mental health classes in a public school, I might not be here. If it weren't for mental health classes, I might still think there was something wrong with me. Healthcare is such a privilege, and mental health is considered a luxury. If 13 year old me had never been told the signs and symptoms of my illness, then 30 year old me would have never known, let alone had the strength, to finally reach out and get the help that I *needed.*

The cat took the medicine by herself without a fuss a few days later. Like, you're getting to know your body, you're in that phase where you're starting to get crushes, you're body starts changing, and you begin to mature mentally. All of that has to do with who you are attracted to (or not attracted to) and what gender you feel most comfortable with. It shouldn't be seen as such a taboo thing for teenagers to suddenly start talking about LGBTQ+ topics, its part of learning who you are. You have a point, it would be good for it to be a normal part of teenage to learn about the different orientations and gender stuff too, and figure it out with plenty of time and hopefully, support too. For it to be something that everyone does. It would help people not see cishet as the default, and make kids generally aware of the different orientations, so even if they're cis and straight, when they encounter someone who's not, it won't be a new or unknown thing to them. Might actually be a really good way to combat prejudices and help people with currently lesser known orientations not have to explain their existence every time they meet a new person that they wanted to share that part of themselves with😅 As someone who grew up not knowing any info about lgbt stuff - 'gay' was a swear and you only might have heard what it actually meant from gossip in school hallways - I never understood why I was so full of insecurities and the feeling of not belonging, during teenage. I only heard my orientations described once I had already become an adult, and it was such a relief and helped me understand myself much better. I really hope kids nowadays can go through those kinds of revelations much earlier and that it's even just a little safer for them. I believe I wouldn't have had to basically experience my teenage in my twenties, if I had it more figured out when I was actually a teen :'D

Yes, auto-generated captions are really helpful, and then simply go through the video to see that everything is correct. If Click watches through his video after uploading it on KZbin, he can correct all errors manually. It's extra work but beneficial for more reasons: - People can have auto-translated captions (here you must have correct subtitles though) - KZbin search seems to partially include subtitles - Probably helps Google search and other discoverabilities.

10:10 actually, it has traces of truth in that statement. Tetanus bacteria is common in digestive system of animals. The thing is, after it was excreted from the system, it can spread. There is a lot of poop in soil, so wound contact with soil is still very dangerous in this regard, for example. Also, rusty metal is connected with tetanus not because of the magical properties of rust, but because it was probably rusting in the soil, and rusted metal is porous enough to accumulate bacteria-contaminated dirt, and still sharp enough to cause deep wound.

Now think about the fact that humans have been screaming into the void of space for 50+ years in the HOPE of getting SOMETHING'S attention? Fortunately, it would be very difficult for an animal to develop to the point of intergalactic travel, without having developed rational educational and social systems. So basically, we probably don't have to worry about them, we have to worry about us. Animals naturally have an instinct to destroy to their benefit. And without any understanding of the world they easily overpower rational thinking. Infighting is a deadly blade.
@MyVanHaven
@MyVanHaven Жыл бұрын
@@Mariwend true, and a good idea, to a point. I'm also reminded of the history of the fictional race from Star Trek, the Klingons. They were infiltrated eons ago by an alien race and forced to mine resources on their home planet while the aliens likened themselves to "gods." The Klingons, being a war like race, rose up and managed to kill these "gods" and stole their technology and quickly became a space-faring race. Same thing for the Terrans from Star Trek. They managed to develop warp 1, get visited by Vulcans in a first contact, then immediately killed the Vulcans and stole their warp 7 capable ships to expand their xenophobic empire. While both fictional, they pose a disturbing thought experiment for what kind of races may be zipping around the real galaxy and who humans may actually be shouting at. There's also this theory that as soon as aliens land, humans will finally be able to turn their animosity toward each other, outward, toward a new manufactured enemy, whether they're a threat at all or not. The possibilities are endless, but as you suggest, my fingers remain crossed squarely over optimism in regards to alien visitation lol. I still hope it happens in my lifetime

To be fair, the early wedding dresses in Europe used to be black. The best dress a person generally owned was a black sunday dress, which would have been what they wore for their wedding too. There definitely were no separate dresses for weddings for a layperson. White wedding dress is quite a modern invention. Yes, it has adopted the same symbolism as a babtismal dress or alba that is worn under the mass garments of a priest or a child in their confirmation. But the meaning is sort of laid on top of the trend when it comes to wedding dresses. The idea of it symbolising PERSONAL "purity" is near heretical. Alba, for equal example, symbolises clothing oneself with Christ, being dressed into God's mercy instead of your own "purity" or lackthereof, if you were to believe in such thing. The core Christian belief being God has decided to not look at your shortcomings but looks at you through Jesus instead, views any human through Christ's actions and death on earth. In other words, it seems sacrilegious to claim your own purity has any value being bragged in front of God in any Christian denomination. If one assignes some symbolism onto wedding garments, it most definitely shouldn't be a totally made up sexual status of a woman as if it makes one any less pure in front of God. But again, it's pretty arbitrary anyway since what you are wearing doesn't make marrieage any less legally valid or any less sacret in any church. Marriage is first and foremost a legal contract all around the world, not something that effects your salvation in Christian doctrine.

11:16 This is really sad. I remember hearing a long time ago that black cats and dogs get adopted less, someone made an organization to spread awareness. I don't have the words to explain how sad this makes me. Animals love people and telling someone to leave them in a shelter alone until they die... hurts my heart.

31:54 Sadly, there ARE way too many people with the "That's not for us, though" / "Doesn't apply to me" attitude & lack-of-thinking. I knew someone who professed to be Green/Earth-Friendly. When I questioned them throwing out an intact plastic 6-pack ring, they looked utterly confused. I straight out asked about cutting it up (This was before we could recycle them) & he ACTUALLY SAID, "Oh! I didn't think it meant ME!" Um, seriously? Do the gnomes come out at night, raid your trash, & take care of it for you or do the magic fairies wave their wand over it & turn it into baby unicorns?

It really needs to be illegal to discriminate against people who have been tried but not convicted of crimes, or have had their conviction overturned. I have no fucking clue why it isn't already. It's a massive oversight and it's screwing people over constantly. That university and scholarship organization (if applicable) should automatically face legal action in criminal court for that. None of this making the victim pursue civil litigation bullshit. It needs to be prosecuted. I'm so fuckin tired of hearing about people getting fucked over for being tried even when they're not convicted.

i mean, if you are found not guilty, there should be nothing on public record. because even if there were laws making it illegal for employers to use mere accusations as foundation for not hiring, or firing people, with the current laws, they could just fire you for no reason anyway. only way to fight it is to make it illegal to publish/spread information about an accused until they have been proven guilty ( unless the accused consents to the information being made public )

@@AIHumanEquality Well where I live arrest records are included in background checks for seven years regardless of whether they're convicted of a crime, and it would be foolish to believe employers don't look down on such things. 33:27 Actually, black probably is the color they’re expecting her to wear. My grandparents had my uncle before they were legally allowed to get married. Their conservative catholic community forced them to when they were of age and my grandmother had to wear a black dress so everyone could see her “impurity”. This was around 1950, insane that there’s still people who think like that.

I read the autism Peta article when it came out just to see what they were claiming the link was. The title of the article was pretty misleading, (surprise, surprise,) the article was about how, in some people, dairy can cause indigestion issues, and discomfort caused by indigestion can exacerbate symptoms of autism due to sensory issues. So milk doesn't cause autism, but if you're both autistic and lactose-intolerant, you might be uncomfortable. That's the link.
