Europeans tend to forget that our widespread tolerance of lactose is the result of a pretty recent genetic defect - a different probably even more recent defect of the same gene led to some sub-saharan populations being able to digest milk/lactose as well. That's the reason why you should never give milk to an animal which is already beyond its first teeth/an adult, regardless whether cat, dog, hedgehog, whatever - they can't digest it. It's like force-feeding a person "suffering" of lactose intolerance (which is the default setting in mammals after all) with milk products - actual animal torture..
