Fun fact about the last comic: Ingredients used in cauldron brewing may actually have been simply flowers, as a lot of ingredient names are also the nicknames for certain plants, orchids, flowers, and maybe even mushrooms that grew in the local area from where those recipes come from. I don't recall the exact specifics of this, but I am very sure that this has been confirmed to some degree. (But they may still have used specific non-plant and non-fungi ingredients)

4:05 Point of note for this: Cricket balls generally fly very low, which makes a crotch hit way more likely. So this is more likely down to the sport being not very competetive before the 70s rather than the sudden epiphany that brains are fragile.
@Wolfsschamane Жыл бұрын
I don't think competitiveness will have had much to do with anything here, it was a very popular sport. I vaguely remember the tale of an English team sailing around the world to play against Australia in Australia quite a while before flights existed. Professional teams already existed back then. You may be right about the trajectory of the ball though. With low amount of people being hit on the head not many will have thought about headgear.
@Nightfire613 Жыл бұрын
The thing is, I’ve heard very similar statements about OTHER sports, 1888 and 1971 for baseball specifically, and while I can see why the catcher would want a protective cup for his akimbo legs as soon a possible, the batter still had a reasonable chance of getting hit in the face with a 100mph fastball. It still should NOT have taken the better part of a century to get some protective gear on their brain cases too, few years at most.
@renakunisaki Жыл бұрын
@@Nightfire613 I just looked it up, and it seems the main motivation for protecting the genitals was that getting hit there *HURTS* and would easily put a player out of commission for the rest of the game, leaving the team at a disadvantage. Getting hit in the head was painful, but not enough to stop you from playing. They didn't realize how harmful those head strikes were. After all, the brain is protected by a thick layer of bone, so why do you need to protect it further? Whereas the genitals aren't shielded at all.
