RIP majestic Kipenzi. 22yrs seems very young to pass away. You can see he was a confident and trusted leader, in the way his family followed and deferred to him. A sad loss for his family. 💐

Translated from the Danish News: "Givskud Zoo has lost its silverback, the male gorilla Kipenzi, due to an advanced, serious illness that could not be cured. ‌The male gorilla Kipenzi had been ill for a period, and was therefore examined with specialized blood tests, as well as ultrasound scans of the heart and abdominal cavity with the help of experts from the Zoo in Copenhagen, as well as specialists from Rigshospitalet and KUSUDN, University for Small Livestock. Unfortunately, the ultrasound scan showed that Kipenzi had contracted peritonitis, which had spread to the abdomen. Peritonitis is infection around the abdominal organs, and is very difficult, if not impossible, to cure in a gorilla. We therefore made the difficult decision to euthanize him while he was sedated,"
