He has been guiding them, helping them learn how the world works, and how to think about things. Unfortunately, they've become too reliant of my pc, so I'm going to invoke the twist a bit earlier than planned. Long story short: the group we are kicking the hornets nest of was founded by him, but because of how they've changed, he had to become what he hated [an adventurer]. Then, the party gets to choose how to handle my character. They can kill him, or let him go. If they let him go, he will give them his gear, and a book about the group's plans. This gives the players choices and shows them I'm not upset. After all, he was only meant to get thee players feet wet and used to the game, not a crutch.

I actually use DMPCs pretty much for all of my games that all serve different purposes. However, I've had the habit to, if they're not too story central, to just be there to make the PC's lives much easier for them. However, I've always had the ones that were plot relevant fall into, my words here, the "unfortunate big bad" where the character was nice and likeable, but do to the circumstances, had to be dealt with as enemy in order to complete their quest. I always found it compelling that two sides that have no inherent ill will towards another have to fight because that's just how the situation plays out. Makes it less "bad guy versus good guy" and can be very emotional.
@Zeithri3 жыл бұрын
Here's an interesting idea I've had; Have the players do the usual stuff from adventuring, quests, beat the baddie, and basically get knighted or something by the Kingdom. Highest honors and all that and now they are a part of it. Then that arc is 'done', have them make new characters, taking place some 10-20 years later or so, the world is a more darker place more oppression, and as the characters move along, they realize this world came to be because of their old characters, and their characters are now the villains of the story. It's taking the quote of " _You either die a hero or live long enough to see you become evil_ ". Technically this isn't nothing new to the world of story telling. Star Wars did the same with Darth Vader after all. Hell, you could even have one of the characters be a child of one of the old characters, and one of the old characters could be a mentor, having seen the signs and went into hiding to train the new characters later on. Lots of potential here.

How I would’ve saved the campaign: “Among the crowd throwing fruit, a single rock flew up above. But, it wasn’t heading for the PC’s. In what felt like the longest 5 seconds of your life, the king was hit square in the forehead by the seemingly random rock. He fell over, motionless on the floor, causing the royal guard to start infighting, causing one to trip over the fallen king’s head and further crushing his face under the heel of his metal boot. The crowd erupts into a wild frenzy, realizing that this was the chance they never thought they would get. A chance to avenge every wrong the king had done to them. A chance to be the heroes in this story. A chance... to revolt. The magical stocks that bound you suddenly feel nowhere near as restrictive as they were before, and, in an instant, the suppression of your magic is lifted. Four of the royal guards cut you loose of your stocks, and instruct you to do one simple thing: *Get your items and RUN.* You now have the keys to the chests that hold all of your items.”

Or this: "It's nighttime and everyone's a bit off and weary about what the king did and some are questioning his rule, but not outright as they're afraid of him and the "heroes". The hero OP's character met those years ago visits her while she's still tied explaining to her why she should've chosen him and how he's grown "attracted" to her. She spits in his face and he leaves. 2 creepy and sketchy individuals come up with bad intentions until they're knocked out by a guard, maybe one of the instructors at the school. He explains that they should get out of the capital outside the city and to go to a secret location where there's a supposed rebellion. He also explains how he's been screwed over by the heroes at one point when one of them took advantage of his daughter when she attended the academy and threatened to have him and his family executed if he told anyone when he found out. @@trollfarmergoestowashington You can stop it from existing *in the campaign*. In fact, deciding what does and does not exist in the campaign is pretty much the core responsibility of the DM. When I DM, rape absolutely doesn't exist. If I want players to experience consequences for something, I come up with something else, then ask myself: - "Is it fair?" - "Is it engaging?" - "Will it further the plot or their PC's character growth?" If I answer "no" to any of those questions, it's not a worthwhile consequence. Unless you have a table full of incels, at least one person will be uncomfortable and will disengage to avoid future discomfort, so rape always gets a "no" to the second question. In most cases, it often gets a 'no' to the first and third questions too.

Not nearly as bad as this, but when I helped set up a group when I got to college, I was excited to start regular sessions again. I rolled my first rogue, who had a classic run away from home backstory, with a pinch of betrayal, particularly from his then lover. My DM knew all of this. This campaign was in a really cool setting: floating islands, with airships being how people got from one place to another. Add a bit of steampunk to allow things like guns and Warforged, and it seems like a super fun place to run a campaign. Session one, before our party even met up, my rogue encounters a fellow tiefling in this city, and pays for a ride to get where he needs to go. She tries to come onto him, even telling him to meet her under a bridge or some shit, but he politely declined. Later, after the party officially formed and we're staying at an inn, my character suddenly feels a sharp pain in his leg where the other tiefling touched him. Cue a blight spell on a level 2 character, and hearing the tiefling woman's voice saying, "shouldn't have stood me up, asshole." Somehow I survive, brought back to consciousness by our warforged paladin, and we tell the innkeeper who says he'll keep an eye out. Think that's the end? Oh no, there's more. A couple days later, after a fun festival, we were getting the last of our things together before we set sail, when my character is shot in the shoulder. We look around, and guess who it is? The same damn tiefling holding a rifle on a building across the street. We all climb up and give chase, our bard throwing Vicious Mockery, and me shooting at her with my shortbow, while getting a piggyback ride from our paladin to get some cover (she had the protector fighting style, so it actually worked really well). When we catch up to her, she jumped off the roof and shot herself in the head with a pistol. We climb down and try to loot the body, looking for a possible connection to a crime syndicate here in the city or something (I thought there had to be more to it than just "you stood me up"), but the guards show up instantly, took our statements, and carried off the body and her belongings. After the game, I asked the DM privately if there was any other reason and he said no. So there you have it. My first rogue was almost killed twice by the same person because he didn't sleep with her, due to previous trauma that the DM knew about.

People play these games to escape from the shittiness of reality, not to be plunged back into hearing offensive shit for the sake of "realism", and I imagine most of the people who find those to be interesting plot points don't actually experience it IRL. Especially when instead of a fantasy version like maybe a matriarchal society that oppresses men, or a society of a hyper-fertile race that ostracizes heterosexual couples due to overpopulation, it always seems to be offensive shit that mimics problems that exist in the real world and targets people who actually deal with that shit already, usually from the mind of someone who hasn't dealt with any of it.

I actually thought of a cool Idea for a design for a sequel campaign. the campaign would start where this campaign ended. it would open with a cutscene esc intro describing how the people in the capital were a bunch of dicks and the king power word killed most of the players with a single power word. the campaign would then pick up a year or so later where the main party would be secretly training under the sorc and the "fighter". they would show up as DMPC's (yes I know that's kind of ironic but hear me out) that would only help the party if the party requested it. I think a good Idea for the early game is that the encounters would be almost impossibly hard and one of the actual DMPC's would show up as the ex machina but the only reason they don't kill you immediately is because they still have to deal with the current encounter. I feel like giving them a sort of SA-X vibe would be a pretty cool introduction to what would eventually become the late game bosses. The thing that really gets me on this story is having the kingdom go against them and be evil didn't actually offend the players. They seemed eager to deal with the issue head on. It's that the GM punished them for that in the most line crossing way possible.

@@BlazingOwnager Yeah, I agree... For the most part it is not like homosexuality was realistically a very accepted thing during medieval times (Unless you play certain Pathfinder stories then even the trolls are lesbians), but I mean, GM was already a dick, but I feel if you want to deal with certain people being bigots and even handling more sensitive topics it would probably be fine as long as you address it before hand. People need to remember that the only thing in D&D more powerful than the DM is the combined power of the players. Since that campaign was clearly over they should have just had their characters reveal that they were Gods that disguised themselves as mortals and that they have judged this kingdom unfit to continue. I mean, there was a lot of realism. It was just too much and poorly used. You can have all of that in a game depending on if your players allow it. But all at once, with instant player killers, and forced fetishes on players? No.
@lonely19513 жыл бұрын
Once I played dnd with a group full of guys. My dm made a plot line where my character got stalked by an npc rogue, and later kidnapped. No assault happened, but the npc threatened a lot of fucked up shit, and I, as a person who has been raped in real life, wasn’t having a fun time at the table that night. Afterwords I asked my DM to please not include me in scenes like that. He kind of was an ass about it and basically said “people always tell me not to add girls to my table but I thought you could handle a realistic scene.” And then I explained to him that I actually understood pretty well that it was realistic because I myself have been raped. And he apologized profusely. I don’t think he actually understood that rape is a thing that happens rather frequently. To people he knows.
@AHoboIsEatingMyShoe2 жыл бұрын
“PeOpLe AlWaYs TeLl Me NoT tO aDd GiRlS tO mY tAbLe” ok so he thinks girls are oversensitive but goes through with a scenario that he knows is a sensitive subject for women anyway. Instead of just not doing that. If he had a table of all male players with male characters, he wouldn’t have done anything like that to their characters, and yet somehow the game wouldn’t be ruined by the absence. but they act like if there is a girl at their table, they simply HAVE to assault/harass them in game, theres clearly just no other options. Sorry you had to go through that

@bibbobella3 жыл бұрын
Same. I often leave it to one area of the map though and my own personal feelings always end up coming out into light fairly easily so it is pretty clear that the racism/slavery/sexism is negative..I really try to make it seem neutral but I have failed so far so it often becomes something the PC's either have to fight or choose to willfully ignore...except that one time where the PC's choose to go "Oh? they have legal slaves here?! Awesome! That is some very easy workforce for our boat! Uh we can even pay them a little and give them some level of freedom! that way they won't revolve against us as easily! :D But should they we will still have the slavemark on them! :) We can just put it on their hands so at most they will lose their arm rather than their heads if they go against us!" ...That became a fairly interesting plot for a little while there... It honestly became more of a joke than the fairly serious issue I had thrown their way but I guess they did kinda help those 20 or so slaves they..."helped" away from their cruel master...It was honestly hillarious. When it comes to racism it is mostly just there to annoy the players more so than do anything that cruel. The prices might go up a bit with certain shopkeepers if they are the "wrong" race and the guards will keep a keener eye on them and the like but that is about it. I don't want to punish the player for choosing a race more so than make them feel a little bit out of place in certain areas.

I mean, as a DM, I feel it is my responsibility to get an emotional response from my players. Subjects like Rape do exist, and are addressed in my homebrew world, but it is never something a player is subjected to, and it is always a topic I work with carefully in order to ensure I don't upset anyone. I've even had young ladies, survivors of rape, at my table. And in those instances I remove most content even regarding the subject. I even re-wrote one of my darker characters back story in order to remove any reference to the subject so as not to cause anyone any pain. As DM's we are responsible for the people at our table, I genuinely believe this. We are responsible for making sure they have a good time, I met them halfway with any bullshit their character think up and call a plan, and I am responsible for ensuring my world, and the story I've planned, doesn't cause issues with peoples mental health. During session zero I flat out state my worlds are borderline Grimdark, and a lot of fucked up shit happens, but if you have issues with any specific subjects speak up at the table, and if that makes you uncomfortable, just message me and let me know. I will avoid any subjects anyone at the table feels uncomfortable with.

Yeah, like, in my setting, real world bigotries like sexism, homophobia and transphobia do not exist, and sexual violence, if it happens at all, is never addressed, BUT, I absolutely 100% agree that it CAN be incorporated in safe, healthy and positive ways. Jessica Jones is one of the best things Marvel has put out precisely BECAUSE it addressed heavy topics like that in a positive way. Of course, at the same time, Jessica Jones is NOT going to be for everyone. I have friends who have trauma related to sexual violence and they CANNOT watch Jessica Jones. The same principal applies to TTRPGs. The important thing is being open and upfront with your players and respecting their limits. Let them know what they're getting into, and accommodate them the best you can. If you're unable to accommodate them, then it is totally fine for you and the player to agree that the game you want to run just isn't for them. Sucks, but it happens. Blindsiding your players with some dark edgelord shit like this guy did is just the WORST kind of DMing. Some people just seem to want a power trip and don't give a damn about their players' safety or enjoyment.

OP saw potential in the worldbuilding (as it did have potential, a clearly unintentional side effect), so they stuck with it. As a player, you generally have some trust in the DM to steer you right, even if it feels like a bumpy ride. Sometimes, the players own creativity works against them. And I'm sure there are great DM's who have used nasty tactics, but have actually turned it into a good experience, allowing the players to confront it or beat it, or just simply to provide conflict for them. Seriously, how hard is it for these people to make a decent DMPC? All they got to do to make them likable is have them support the party (not lead it, have them be at the same level of strength), not steal the glory constantly, and give them a personality that isn't annoying!

I've dealt with a pervy player before, but never pervy dms. And as a woman I'd love to keep it that way, but I know its bound to happen eventually considering how often I play. The 1 pervy player I dealt with was a total creep. He wanted to play a child assassin. That itself wasnt the main issue, although the dm was already not ok with anyone playing child characters & had explicitly said so. The big issue came in when he started explaining the backstory of his character, sexualized his CHILD character & literally described her as jail bait. The dm gave him an ultimatum: either change his character completely or be kicked from the game & from the club the game was apart of before we even had a single session. He refused to change his character so he was kicked. His parents are both really powerful & high up lawyers, who were known to throw money at all their problems, so we knew if we tried to do anything to get him on some sort of watch list or something, it wouldn't go anywhere. Last I heard from him tho, that whole conflict was a massive reality check for him & hes actually been working on becoming a better person overall & been getting help for his issues
@ramirezthesilvite4 жыл бұрын
You know, it's perfectly fine to have a dark and gritty "realistic" campaign, but you need to inform your players beforehand, first of all. Not everyone will want to play that way. Second, your players' choices need to matter. As DM you are running a game for the players. If you want to dictate what happens to them without giving them any agency, just write a damn book. That's pretty common advice for every railroading DM: Just write a book.

@BlazingOwnager3 жыл бұрын
The thing with this story is the gritty realistic part of it is not what crossed the line. Having the kingdom oppose them was a challenge the players seemed very down with. I'd say they were being a little too sensitive if that, itself, was the problem. .... everything that happened following that was 'GTFO' territory.
@WolfyFancyLads3 жыл бұрын
The thing is, we've seen gritty happen well. Call of Cthulhu, Ravenloft (that's the one, yeah? Big evil place with little to no escape?), Fallout games or even just generic DnD adventures with drama. People can enjoy gritty, but there's a difference between gritty like a gritted icy path and gritty as in "GRANDMA GOT RAN OVER BY A LORRY FULL OF GRIT!!!". When it comes to roleplaying games, the level of grit is determined by module, but if it ever exceeds 50% (50% being hard truths, deaths and mention of unpleasant sexual events but never shown them) then it becomes uncomfortable for players. And if the players aren't feeling it then, much like a tandem bike that snapped in two while you were on the rear seat, you better start backpedaling your plot ideas or be prepared to eat the grit you see.

The more of these I listen to, the more I come to terms that I am doing amazing as a DM. I have only been at it for about two months but I am getting solid praise from the group and have determined that my self depreciation could be new DM jitters/trying not to get too full of myself. The group consists of people I know and all, but one, are from another group (that dm is one of my players). I feel like it is good karma to DM for the regular DM and he is having a great time. The worst experience I have been a part of-though not nearly a horror story by this channel standards-was a DM that would not stop accepting additional players until the player count was eleven. I quit quite quickly. I played with them later on once all the extra/toxic players were cut down through the drama I avoided but it wasn’t much better. The DM and two remaining players were playing literally every night regardless of my attendance. Since I was missing more than half the story, I quit again. I ended up not talking to them for about a year until the DM rolled into my instant messages with an emote. I am like what do you want? He said “nothing” and was just wondering if I was alive. That annoyed me so I called him out on passive aggressively excluding me. This is a shorter version with many of the details skipped that resulted as it did. Effectively, I had seen him passive aggressively hate someone else and felt that I was getting the same treatment. It was particularly disappointing since, when he was not being a dick, I had a lot of fun with them.

I cried watching this... People can call me a snowflake if they want for not being able to handle some "realistic story", but I feel so sad for the players and I wish them the best and that this never ever happens to them or anyone else again.
@playahsan4 жыл бұрын
The second saddest part (after the, well, obvious) was that up until that moment the story sounded kinda cool. All the DM had to do was make the king sigh and tell them that they really shouldn't do it in public and then maybe he'll turn a blind eye on that. That's it. After that the game could've gone for a long time. But nooooo, he just had to recreate his favorite hentai doujin and get offended when others are weirded out. Also props for store owner who acted like a parent chastising a kid.
@Nuggette4 жыл бұрын
honestly the king could've stayed an asshole that they would rebel against. How cool would it be for the "prized" (I guess they were chosen by the legendary heroes) students of academy to turn against it and overthrow the shitty government they were forced serve? But no DM just had to get offended by these "snowflakes"
@liamdalemon15254 жыл бұрын
can I just point out that these players are true martyrs. when they were told to disavow their team or be killed they decided to show the crowd OF FU- they decided to show the crowd that their society was wrong, even if no one would listen. those PCs are MUCH better heroes than the people the town calls "HeRoEs" if they are willing to die to support gay rights. I've been forced to change Class once. But the DM made sure I knew that the NPC was forcing my character into a role she didnt want to be in to the point that she had a break down and killed them, exploding into a massive plot where all the PCs had to deal with trauma kicked off from that event. It was kinda crazy
@ottokarl54272 жыл бұрын
I don't know how you can even act like that. As a DM, I once (once!) had a bit of a "damsel in distress" scene with one of my female players/characters. Not only did I ask her beforehand and even discussed the scene a bit with her (since her character was basically part of a magical trap but wouldn't be able to interfer in the following fight), but I also apologized like a hundred times to her, explaining why it would work best with her character, with what kinds of setup she would be comfortable etc. And while everything played out really well and everyone (including her) were excited about the whole scene, it still felt a bit weird to look at my group and basically say "well, you are all heroes, except for you girly, you are the damsel-eyecandy lol" So how anyone actually can think do just throw a rape-story on their players and be suprised that they are not on board is truely beyond me...
