Artificer could have just waited for battle smith's steel defender at level 3 or tried getting "find familiar" instead from a feat at level 1. As another person noted, he could have also gotten homunculus servant at level 2. As for exceptions, it could work if the table were allowed similar exceptions. Also sounds stupid for Artificer to complain about being hindered as a caster when the class is a half caster with use outside of spell slots.

Story 2 DM’s have the right to say “This is not happening.” Whether that is allowing a person to go into a sleeping quarter, to even allowing any sort of roll. “Congrats. You rolled a 19… but I didn’t call for a roll and I’m not allowing this.”

With the plot hook story, I kind of understand the first instance; I’d feel like the call had a 50/50 chance of being a trap too. But if the plot hook was important, the DM and player could have worked together to find a less sketchy method of contact if that was the problem.

If a player ever does anything out-of-line, such as murderhobo behavior, ask the player; Why do you want to do this? Their response will be; "It's what my character would do" Counter with; OK, but YOU control your caharcters actions. Your character doesn't control you. So, again, Why do YOU want to do this? They probably won't admit an answer to this and you can shut them down.
@Wraithspartan2 күн бұрын
To an extent, this is generally true. However, sometimes a character is different from the player's own base personality and acts in a way that might even contradict the player's ethics. Example - a character okay with torturing an enemy for information. He is ruthless enough to "do what needs done" or "do the dark and nasty things to protect society", etc. Now, there does enter the question of why a player would design a character who does some of the really stupid or extremely nasty actions...

Story 1: Yikes! I'm just glad DM's sister got out of what sounds like a terrible, if not outright abusive (the 'must be more important than her character' is a red flag) relationship. Story 2: I don't think I need to go into details about just how appropriate Frollo is as a name for this creep. What I want to say is, GMs, YOU decide when characters roll; if they roll unprompted, especially in a situation where they're trying to do something like this, you do not have to acknowledge the roll, much less accept the result. Story 3: The third answer is the right one; Artificer was just being a dickhead. 'Rule of Cool' is not meant to be about making super OP characters, especially when everyone else is playing by RAW.

I get the frustration of the dm in the superhero game...but i do think the dm, after hearing the player clearly reject the given mode of story hook, should have not gone on to try it the same way two more times. While the players reaction to the calls was a bit extreme to say the least, i don't really see a fundamental flaw in the reasoning that trusting a random dude, who is calling you in increasingly sketchy ways, is a bad idea. The dm should have pulled the player aside and just asked if he didn't want to follow that storyline at all, or if presented in a different way he'd be willing to follow that thread. But, either way, the phone call should probably stop...if only for the phones safety.
