That feminism post where they assumed someone's gender reminded me of something that happened to me online once. It was on a video(can't remember the name of the video) where students where blocking white students from getting to their classes on campus. I posted a comment about how hypocritical it is to fight racism by being racist, and one if my first replies was "If you can’t understand how this is equality, you are not a true American." I’m British.

The deaf baby one is maybe the worst thing I've ever read. I was born deaf. For the first few years of my life, my parents didn't realize I couldn't hear; as soon as I took a hearing test, and my parents were told I was completely deaf, they pretty much immediately chose for me to have surgery that allowed me to hear about half as well as a normal person instead of being completely deaf. Just a couple years after the surgery, I started playing piano, then guitar, and eventually become a guitarist in the house band at a very popular bar, and started to compose and record film scores/soundtracks. If my parents had never got me that surgery, and decided to "deal with having a deaf child" instead, then I wouldn't have been able to do anything with music; writing, recording, performing, and even just listening to music are my favorite things in the world. If my parents had been regressive tumblr douches like that person who commented on the picture, and not had me have the surgery, they would've been robbing me of everything that brings me the most happiness in my life. The thought that there are parents out there who would deny their deaf child that surgery in the name of "tolerance" is fucking disgusting. Choosing for your child to be disabled, even though they could have a procedure that could take that disability away and give them a normal life, is not being tolerant or progressive; it's fucking child abuse. Nobody would keep their child blind, or in a wheelchair if they didn't have to be, so why the fuck would anybody choose to keep their kid deaf? (This is not the first time I've heard someone with that opinion either, which is so depressing.) I'm so glad I was born in '91 and not today, where robbing your child of a normal life (and an entire goddamn sense) by keeping them unnecessarily disabled is seen as tolerant and good. It's fucking monstrous, and anyone who does it should lose their kids. It's 2018, and the world is fucking upside down.

I heard a story saying that there are couples who actually WANTS to have disabled children so they feel morally superior or create a false sense of accomplishment while raising them, and to make other people feel sorry or pity towards them (the parents). I was so shocked about it, how come there is this kind of scum in our world.

Emilio Rodriguez - That's so fucking awful. When did the world decide to go completely insane?
@goyohan53966 жыл бұрын
I mean that’s awesome for you and I’m glad you liked your implant. But my deaf uncle was extremely happy with his because the sound is extremely painful for him for some reason. The doctors said he might be over sensitive to sound because as a child his cochlear implant was weaker so his inner ear was straining to hear things and now that they are more sensitive and powerful his ear isn’t used to that much stimulation and that’s what causes the pain. They’ve tried lowering the volume and sensitivity but it still causes pain. So while I’m glad you discovered a passion for music, not every deaf person loves their implant and I think we should all be respectful of that. That’s why even though I’m hearing, I believe deaf babies shouldn’t be given implants. I think the parents should wait until the child is about to start school and ask them if they’d rather go to a school with other deaf children or get a cochlear implant and go to school with an integrative classroom setting.
@calvinlee81036 жыл бұрын
Goyohan - I understand what you're saying, and definitely have sympathy for your uncle's difficult situation, but I do not agree with you. I still consider it abuse to choose to keep your child deaf if there is a solution that could make them hear. Just like I think it's abuse to keep a child in a wheelchair if there is a quick fix that would allow them to walk. A cochlear implant ended up causing your uncle pain, and probably some other deaf people too. So if a person tries it, and it causes them discomfort, they can weigh the pros and cons and decide whether that discomfort or pain is worse than being deaf or not; if it is, they can choose to have it turned off. That's a very major life decision that would be difficult for any adult to make. I don't think a child who is just about to start school has the mental capacity to fully understand the situation, let alone make such a big decision about their lives and future. Meanwhile, while you've been waiting for them to be old enough to start school before allowing them to hear, (which is essentially just robbing that child of an entire sense that you have chosen not to give them) by that time they've spent about 5 years growing up with less understanding of the world around them than other kids their age, causing a high likelihood that that child is going to fall behind the other kids their age. (Even though I had been able to hear for a couple years, my parents sent me to preschool a year late, so I'd have more time to just mentally catch up to where the other kids were at. I'm extremely grateful that they did this.) If a kid has just started hearing right before starting school, school is going to be insanely difficult for them compared to the other kids. But let's say you have a deaf child, but your worried that a cochlear implant might cause them pain, like what happened to your uncle. Instead of robbing them of a potentially normal life by keeping them unnecessarily deaf for years, give them the surgery. If they start crying a lot more than normal, or harder than normal, or even if something just doesn't seem quite right; just turn it off, and see if that's what's causing it. I think that the small possibility that it might cause them some pain they won't even remember is worth it to miraculously grant them with the ability to hear, almost guaranteeing them a better, more normal life. I just don't see any circumstance where I'd find it appropriate (or moral) to have the ability to cure a child's deafness now, but not do it until later. That's complete insanity to me.

Alec Ari But.. see here's the thing. I think you mean, specifically, _gender dysphoria_ because the word by itself means "a state of unease or generalized dissatisfaction with life." So... take your own advice, maybe? The only thing you need to be trans is that your birth-assigned sex doesn't align with your gender. Which _gender dysphoria_ covers, but just general dysphoria does not.

The deaf baby part is why I have an issue with "culture" My issue isn't with the dangers of the surgery, that makes sense and is valid. My issue is the whole "deaf culture" nonsense. Especially from what I've seen from the other comments, you should let other people decide how to raise a child, and should be shamed from potentially giving your child a more positive life because "muh deaf culture" and "being deaf isn't so baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad guys, it's not like it's a LITERAL disability something!" also, "I'm deaf and don't mind it so I have the authority to govern how other deaf people should live!!!" It's disgusting and a clear sign of bad parenting, thinking some social nonsense is more important than your child. As i have a feeling I'll get attacked if I don't say this, no I am not deaf (although my hearing is pretty bad) and I do not have kids yet, but the fact people romanticize deafness as this superpower or as this biological advantage and thinking "hearing people are bad parents because they want their child to have an easier life" is dumb. Now i don't have anything against deaf people, never even met one, but my issue is with the pretentious losers who use their disability to bully others.

Heh... 6:10 reminds me of one girl back at school who made a big thing about me being "Rich" (because I was in the A stream). I just ignored her, which probably didn't do much for the relationship. Eventually someone who actually knew me took her aside and explained that it was fairly well known that I was from a single parent welfare family from the east side of the town (local slum, these days, but only half-way there back then). Personally, I was quite happy for them to continue making a complete ass of themselves for however many years they wanted to. (I did had one huge advantage for which I am very grateful, though - a mother who was fiercely determined that her kids would not one day be left in the same situation as her! - Thanks mum!) ... And the emoji complainer obviously has never seen (or even conceived the concept of) a female body-builder! Rather sexist of them! :-P

I have nothing against Cochlear Implants but I do understand that sometimes they just don't work and can often be frustrating for a lot of kids. Most deaf people don't see hearing as something they necessarily want, there's a sense of pride in being deaf in a lot of families and they would prefer to stick with Sign Language. I hope you make more content, I love your video's.

The Deaf baby thing is just an issue in the Deaf community... Deaf people tend to be very proud of their Deafness and culture so they don't want to "fix" their Deaf children because they don't think they are broken to begin with.
@brendanthedreamer6 жыл бұрын
Well then they don't have to, that's their right. But for hearing parents it is their right to "fix" their child, because deafness has been proven to be fixable. I am autistic myself, so I understand the whole "It's not a disability to me" stance, the difference of course being that there is no justifiable science behind supposed cures for autism, so trying those on children can actually be life-threatening.
@studioLCTRL6 жыл бұрын
There are still risks involved with Cochlear implants. But the reason I feel like it's a problem in the Deaf community is that some people will feel betrayed if their grandchild gets an implant, stuff like that. There's also apparently an issue with Deaf people being illiterate, I don't think this is as prevalent though.

Why would someone avoid learning a language just to avoid appropriating a culture? Like, how do you expect to communicate with people? English, Chinese, and Spanish are probably the most important languages for people to know just to be able to communicate in many workplace settings. Like, sorry Mei, I know we’ve been business partners for 10 years, but I can’t learn Chinese because that’s disrespectful. Also, what do the languages belong to? This person can’t seem to decide whether they want to bitch about race or ethnicities. There are three basic races. So how are we going to trace every single language back to who they belong to? Especially since all of humankind is thought to have come from Africa. I need answers for this.

If that privilege on was real... And I almost doubt it, but think might be real, then that person crying privilege must be horrifyingly miserable. Like a person who told a guy on tumblr to check his privilege for saying his feet were blistered and hurt crazy bad (because he had to do a 12 hour shift doing something that kept his feet soaking wet in protective shoes so he could make a deadline), because some people don't have feet at all. I pointed out the minimum time to develop trench foot (which was accurate but come on. Nobody gets trench foot from one 12 hour period), and what trench foot could do to your feet, and they apologized and said they'd be sure to think about that before commenting in the future. 1. That was the WORST reason to tell someone to check their privilege. 2. Why would you have an argument with the op in the comments, but then not defend yourself from some super obvious outlier to your dumb argument. Idk my point is I hate humans.

In response to 4:58 ish: The problem with “if you think I’m a bigot bc of my opinion then you are also a bigot” is that some “opinions” actually dehumanise ppl. You can’t just say “I everyone has their own opinion” to justify someone who says racist, sexist etc. things!
@dejanhaskovic52046 жыл бұрын
Rebecca H Actually you can. If someone hates somebody, it's their right unless they start actively harming that person. But that doesn't mean you aren't allowed to use your freedom of speech to call out the person if ypu don't agree with them.

gm but some social/political world views are inherently problematic. If I call a neo-Nazi a bigot for wanting a racial cull, I’m not being a bigot. If I call a Christian a bigot for “not believing” in the existence of gay/LGBT+ people, I’m not a bigot. Bigotry comes from a stubborn worldview where if other people don’t fit ones “model” for life, then they don’t exist/aren’t worthy of existing/or something equally dehumanizing.

@Decriminalize Darwinism don't be an ass. They/ them can be used to refer to a single person if you don't know that, go back to school. If for example someone asks 'who owns this wallet' when they find one and I point at the owner and say "it's theirs" or "it belongs to them" it clearly refers to a single person and is gramatically correct. Why does it bother you what other people want to be called? I'm a cis woman myself but if someone called me a guy for some reason I couldn't give two shits, they're just words, they're all made up sounds we make to convey a message, it ain't deep.

@Ed Elric, The Fullmetalfoes Alkahest to be honest I value respecting what another person wants to be called and showing a little kindness than caring about sounding stupid. Wether a person can actually be non-binary or not doesn't bother me really. The act of someone wanting to be called They/ them is harmless, I can't dictate what another person wants to do with their life and if it makes a person feel happier and respected to be called they/ them. I will do it. It's not hard and not worth upsetting someone who hasn't done anything to wrong you because you don't agree with a harmless word they want to be called.

9:27 is thrown way out of context by the OP and definitely deserves to be here but there have actually been some well-supported theories about it. It's been widely studied that (speaking from a point of sex assigned at birth, not gender) females tend to have more fluid states of sexuality than males, and more females than males have homosexual tendencies, particularly in females that may identify as straight or bi. Anyway, the idea is that during the early stages of human evolution, when groups are assumed to have been often one male with a couple/few females and children, if the male didn't come back one day, the females would have each other to sate their emotional and sexual needs until they found another male to procreate with. Just some interesting theories OP might have gotten a basis for their somewhat outlandish claims from.

NotionTheGoatBoy im assuming youve seen Sound and Fury... if not its a great film that follows two families, two deaf children. One gets a cochlear and one remains deaf. It really showed me how much of a hot button issue it is... Hearing parents dont realize that they stole that baby’s culture and identity from him before he even knew what it was. they see deafness as a disability and think that rather than accommodate to their childs needs, they can just throw money at it and rewire their brain. The cochlear is a threat to deaf culture as we know it.

To answer your question : tumblr is not fine
@LouisOnAir6 жыл бұрын
The privilege argument is annoying because I recently learned how it actually works and most people who throw it around are completely missing the point (as far as I've seen). All it is is how hard it would be to succeed from your background; someone determined enough from almost any background could work hard enough to succeed but if you grew up in care or have to move across the world for better education, less people are going to be able to put in the work. Privilege is not directly proportional to how light your skin is, it's just the fact that not having to work all day every day to survive while trying to get into a good university results in more people being able to do so.
@xgullafter95906 жыл бұрын
You're wrong though, that's a nice view to have and it would certainly be nice if things were like that but in reality the color of your skin, your background, etc not only largely determine your upbringing, environment and wealth, but also determine how other people see you. Everyone has preconceived notions about other groups of people, to varying degrees obviously, and it just so happens that Caucasians are seen as the richest, healthiest, most powerful and safe race in the world due to statistics. This not only means that being white is seen as something generally positive by other people compared to being born a dark african, but also it means that you're more likely to be a developed nation, from a family that ISN'T in poverty, that's probably educated, and will live in a relatively safe environment. Hope this helps understand the other side of the equation.

I always see a greater social stigma against white people. Either way talking about race non stop only makes it worse. Some bosses want to avoid hiring minorities because if they do and they happen to be terrible and need to be fired, the boss can't because the person could use the race card as a threat. There are enough of them to scare people away. Alternatively they could have an absurd bias towards them because outsiders could judge you and call you racist for not having a diverse enough work force, even if you're not racist and it's coincidence/circumstance (like an all white town). Talking about race as if it's more than a pigment and an artifact of the past only makes things worse. Plenty of white people who have been oppressed due to racism and plenty of minorities who have had advantages due to their race. Vice versa
@succulentplaylists72666 жыл бұрын
The only way I can see privilege being a thing in America is if your family is super rich or poor or where you grew up and went through. Most people in America seem to not be racist or see people of different skin colors differently. I live in an area where there are very few people that aren’t white and so some people from my school have different opinions on people based on their race, but they don’t treat anyone differently besides the occasional joke. I don’t think gender or race has much effect anymore, at least I’ve never met anyone that really felt and acted like it did. There are obviously some people that are awful and are racist and sexist, but they are certainly the minority

The cochlear implant part actually has a point as deaf people have their own culture with poetry, universities, and norms. The documentary Sound and Fury gives a good inside look into deciding to get a cochlear implant. It's a common misunderstanding that cochlear implants "cure" hearing loss but they only use about 22 electrodes even though humans have 15,000 hair cells, so really you still do not have normal hearing. As well, cochlear implants are frowned upon by the deaf community so the child is not part of deaf culture and not quite part of hearing culture. Sound and Fury gives a good perspective on this for a five year old girl to decide whether or not she wants the implant as she lives in a hearing neighborhood but her family is deaf
