Vellayappam is a traditional South Indian-style dish breakfast from the state of Kerala. It is also called Vellayappam or palappam in the same region. This appam is prepared with fresh rice flour and coconut batter along with instant yeast as a leavening agent. And it does not require soaking and fermentation processes like traditional appam dish and it takes only under 30 minutes to make this tasty meal. Appam is a perfect vegan-friendly and gluten-free dish that can be enjoyed for breakfast and dinner.
About my Vellayappam Recipe
Palappam is one of our favorite breakfast dishes, so I make them on the weekends at least once a month. The preparation is similar to making Dosa Batter, and needs some prep work beforehand.
Traditionally,Vellayappam are fermented with a local alcoholic drink known as toddy - which is a drink made from palm flower or coconut flower.
Toddy, which is made from palm flower or coconut flower, is also known as “kallu” in Tamil and Malayalam or “tadi” in Hindi.So tgats called as kallappam.
Since toddy is not readily available everywhere. This, however, does not mean that you cannot make appams without yeast.
Boiled eggs cooked in spicy onion masala gravy. This Kerala Egg Roast / Nadan mutta roast without coconut is one of the easy and tasty side dishes that you can prepare very quickly. Mostly served for breakfast with Appam (Rice and Coconut pancake) or Noolappam or Puttu.
