Another way to run your Gyres under Apex control is to slowly ramp them up and down in opposition - while one ramps up, the other ramps down, then the ramps switch. To do this, you use a virtual outlet to control the switching between a ramp up profile and a ramp down profile. First, the profiles: [ Gyre_Up ] Type: Ramp Ramp time: 3 Start Intensity: 25 End Intensity: 100 [ Gyre_Down ] Type: Ramp Ramp time: 3 Start Intensity: 100 End Intensity: 25 The virtual outlet: [ Gyre-OSC ] OSC 0:00/3:00/3:00 Then ON The Gyre variable speed outlets: [ Gyre_Left ] Set Gyre_Up If Outlet Gyre_OSC = ON Then Gyre_Down [ Gyre_Right ] Set Gyre_Down If Outlet Gyre_OSC = ON Then Gyre_Up I used a 3 minute ramp duration in this example; to use other times, modify the profiles and the OSC in the VO - they all must be the same. I get this from apex forum thread, may be useful for short duration.

Regarding sand cleaning, a great way to do it is to start a siphon, and instead of removing the water, just lead the hose to a filter sock within the sump. This way, you keep the water, and you get to clean the sand. I️ myself am looking into triton or a similar method
@matthewgordon904
@matthewgordon904 6 жыл бұрын
954 Reef This method works great I call it the phantom water change method aquamaxx sells a 10micron sock on marine depot(yes I said marine depot) that is basically perfect for this. The obvious draw is you just cut your sock holders out lol but you can just make or buy a holder just for this purpose. Also i think it is smart to share this workload with a combination of nasarious snails, sand sifters, the phantom water change method, and stirring manually with whatever (scraper, acrylic rod, plastic rake, hand) doesn’t really matter... in my opinion stirring manually also just gunks up your sump because again you just cut out the socks!!! If you can’t tell I will never be 100% triton method because I will never take mechanical filtration out of my sump. I just value not allowing anything to pass into my sump that could potentially clog pumps and reactors and I use mechanical filtration as a prefilter for my hard earned equipment and not one drop of water is allowed to bypass this stage in my setups and no amount of “but it feeds your chaeto and corals” talk will talk me into it... I also refuse to give up my calcium reactor. Don’t worry the brs 160 will be on my method someday😅.

@Matthew Gordon, just buy a cup holder for a Car. Some of those cup holders can be used to snap onto the refugium walls that are thinner. Should serve the purpose of holding the micro sock temporarily.

I have been using triton core7 base with an ats seeded with ulva for 2 months now and my tank has never looked better

On my new office build I've had running since July, I started with the Trition method (other methods). Because the tank is a Nuvo 40, I don't have room for a traditional sump, so the 10% minimum wasn't possible for me. Instead, I made a DIY algae reactor and it has worked very well. This may be the sweet spot of still being able to use dissolved CO2 and getting all the benefits of the full Triton method. I can't comment on that entirely since I"m using the Core 7 "other" methods (because of not having a traditional 10% fuge space), but it has been effective at reducing nutrients. NO3 for me stays below 0.25 (but still barely above 0, assuming the incredibly light pink hue is accurate on my Red Sea kit). Combined with a small amount of GFO in a filter sock mixed with 2/3 carbon, my PO4 stays betweeen 0.00 and 0.01. I have to say, it has been effective, and maybe too effective, but the small amount of coral I have in this young tank are quite happy and healthy.

Jonathan Wilson I’m my experience, the polyp extension isn’t as good with higher flow. I️ have all my euphilia in lower to mid flow sections of my tank and I’ve had great results. Variability in flow is also very beneficial to coral.

@blasians3370 6 жыл бұрын
I've noticed with more turbulent flow they recede, but I haven't been brave enough to put them through that for an extended time despite knowing that corals can adapt. Polyp extension is fine I think. Corals are growing, but I'm always looking to somehow up my game x]

I simply can’t understand with the type of overflow that is on the brs160 (basically a 16” shadow) how is it possible able to get 1600 gph turn over? I have the 20” synergy reef shadow on a 180 and I can barely get 1200 gph without flooding all three drains? I get that the abyzz pump can drive the volume but it’s a matter of the overflows carrying that water volume.

I wished you went over why you were still dosing aminos and if it's needed to run triton.
@googIereallysucks
@googIereallysucks 6 жыл бұрын
I would be interested to know if the Triton method would be successful without the use of aminos. With the macro algae being so efficient and having to have such a large area for the algae to grow I would assume it is dropping no3 and po4 to undetectable levels, part of the reason you probably are dosing the aminos. How would the system react to those levels of nutrients and just ran everything according to Triton. Would I end up with pale corals?

do you think the triton method would work for a large fish only system ,as with many fish only tanks it would be a matter of time before you would have to treat the tank with medication,which would possibly kill off the algae in the sump,the main idea would be to achieve low nitrates,what are your thoughts :)
