Not an Elite in sight (because The Flood infected them), shadowy figures jumping and running in the hills in the background, and the only ambience being the rain and your gunfire. Top 10 worst places to be in video games. Right now i can think of Arkham Asylum and Heavenly Host Elementary School... Those places means death.
@vc1801916 жыл бұрын
9:15 Idk, first time I played SH2 was last year (yeah, really late to it lol), and I can say that even though it's super dated, the first impression of the Pyramid Head fight was still jarringly effective. You literally are held at fear of James's difficult controls and the tiny cramped space you're in, desperately hugging the walls to get at least SOME kind of distance from that freakin huge butcher knife. Pyramid Head's almost implacable approach and the fact that no matter how many bullets you hit him with, there is literally no sign that he is getting hurt really ramps up the tension as you start wondering if you are gonna actually make it with how fast you are now running out of bullets and still can't tell if you are actually doing anything at all. So yeah, as a person playing the game for the first time even being used to modern games, I still think his first boss fight was jarringly tense and scary. Not so much so for later fights, but Round 1 is still effective for players going in blind.
@themightyai-53022 жыл бұрын
I remember playing A Hat in Time just after release when Vanessa was EVEN WORSE. She was much more persistent and could sometimes see you through walls. The visual distortion that happens when she is close was much more intense and made it really hard to manoeuvre the rooms. Sometimes she also caught you even when you were hidden. Sometimes she got stuck in the kitchen or piano room so that you had to venture out into the corridor the lure her there by quickly walking in and out of the door to the rooms she is in. You could also see through the wall, as the footage in this video, but Vanessa was even hazier and since I had seen what she was capable of, it was really scary. Ah, the last thing that I can't say for sure was different from how it is now is that I think the train-like sound that plays when Vanessa i close was louder compered to the rest of the sound played at the same time compered to how it is now. Not sure tho, might just have been amplified in my nightmares...

When I was younger, I was always freaked out a little by Mimi from Super Paper Mario. I think I still am just a little, not so much from the freakiness factor but because level 2-4 always has that pressure of something chasing you through an essential maze.
@isenokami7810 Жыл бұрын
Mimi’s always felt weird to me in terms of scary enemies. I will not deny that they went overboard with her transformation into the spider form, that was creepy as $&&$…but that’s a cutscene. After that, I never really found her that scary: 2-4 is surprisingly light on the invincible enemy pressure, and the level itself is frankly too normal looking to add to the atmosphere. And once you actually get to fight Mimi, yeah, not really scared of the spider thing. Wondering what the $&&$ it even is, but I’m not exactly hesitant to throw down.
@Flygoniaks Жыл бұрын
@@isenokami7810 Yeah, I think for me (at least these days), most of the "scaryness" factor comes from the pressure of having to get through all of the rooms FAST, lest you have to deal with an invincible enemy that makes thinks more complicated.

15:06 - 15:14 It's a little strange you describe this while showing a clip of the Leon campaign of RE6. You could have shown a clip from any of the other campaigns and it would have worked, but with the Leon campaign it just doesn't. The Leon storyline was genuinely creepy, the atmosphere and build up just right, making it feel almost exactly like RE4. Plus, the need to conserve supplies when playing with a human partner was genuinely nerve-racking. The game lost this in the other campaigns, becoming more action-oriented the further down the list one went, but the Leon playthrough hit that perfect sweet-spot between terror and action, leaning more towards terror than it did action.

So I had an interesting interpretation of Dead Hand and, to an extent, Ocarina of Time as a whole. I know I'm about to get into some Game Theory-level nonsense theorising but please bear with me. Here goes... An alternative interpretation of the game for me is that the game takes place during a zombie apocalypse. Obviously there's stuff like the Redeads and the Stalchildren, but it goes further than that. Note how each area and town in the game is quite isolated and shut-off from other parts of Hyrule, almost like camps of survivors banding together to protect themselves from an extinction-level threat. Under this premise, you could argue that Dead Hand would have been a sort of Patient Zero who was banished to the bottom of the well by the townspeople of Kakariko Village in an act of mob violence, subsequently transforming what was once a sick villager into a Cronenbergian monstrosity. Also, there's no one walking across Hyrule Field except Link, with the only other sign of life being the denizens of the *heavily fortified* Lon Lon Ranch.

i still say tossing bombs around is the best way to deal with dead hand. i've literally run out of bombs while trying to make that thing pop out of the ground with no shame in my soul since me redead/dead hand/wallmaster n64 childhood experience has never left me. i still can't play wind waker's earth temple because before the gamecube was even released those redeads left that much of an impact on me. to this day i still have to have the volume on silent when i'm in the shadow temple/bottom of the well. it just freaks me out that much.

Tbh I think subtitles in Minecraft took away a lot of the fear factor Creepers had. If you get that notification pop up in the bottom of the screen for footsteps with no other sound effect, you know there's a Creeper, and it's probably still a fairly safe distance away from you. I used to play this game with mostly my ears to tell where stuff was through walls and around corners. It required focus. It was more unsettling. Subtitles turned it into easy mode where I can just listen to loud music at the same time and nothing can ever sneak up on me.

I'd agree with number 1 for the first few hours of that game, by after that it's less scary and more "Go away so I can stop hiding and play the game!" I remember playing it on hard, the difficulty the game recommends, and I'd spend many 5 to 15 minute periods doing nothing, because that damned Alien wouldn't go away so I couldn't move on. It just gets more tedious than scary by that point. I still enjoyed the game overall, but I felt that was a flaw.

Bloody Houdini Splicer is the creepiest and most annoying enemy to me. Oh and the hands that drop on you in Zelda dungeons.

Scary things in non-scary games are the best

I never heard of the Witch in Left 4 Dead before. Sounds like a really interesting concept. In fact, I don’t know why, but, scary video game enemies in general were always something that weirdly fascinated me.

Sawrunner from Cry of Fear. Hes not to bad to deal with because your walk can outspeed his chainsaw swings but his speed makes up for that. On a first playthrough, hes terrifying. He just screams and runs at you. A normal players reaction would be to run, and as soon as their stamina goes out, boom, sawrunner is right behind them. His speed makes him one of the most horrifying enemies in the game alongside the hanged women and crazy runners. Luckily, chad players who beat the game under 2.5 hours can unlock a camera that freezes all enemies including sawrunner.

Creepers; don't get me STARTED! Just got the game for the Switch, just settled in playing a survival map where I intend to build a castle, just finished building my first house and just finished making a limitless cobblestone farm and am just settling down to some mindlessness as I hold down the action button and do some browsing on the internet... BOOM! Fuck my fun.

I always thought the headcrab zombie screams were super, super creepy. You do not have to play it in reverse to understand that what they are screaming is human language. The fact that it is played in reverse makes it even more creepy.

Laura? The Evil Within. Cross between the girl from The Ring and a giant spider. She shrieks loudly in pain, has the ability to teleport, is a one-hit kill if it gets you, is extremely difficult to kill (can use other dead bodies as portals to get closer to you) and can really only be hurt by fire. Proper scary.

ive played OoT more times than i can count, and so i have to point out a few things about fighting dead hand that are not immediately obvious. for one, though it is the hardest damage-less method, you can make it appear by chopping down its hands. after you beat it the first time, the best way to go about beating it is to wear the lens of truth and bomb the mysterious shadow. the same effect can be achieved without the lens of truth, but you will waste so many more explosives.
