FNAF 4 was the truest horror game of the series to me. A child's perspective, checking dark hallways instead of cameras, opening the door to listen for breathing sounds. It nailed the feeling of that overactive child imagination making things way scarier than they really are.

While I don’t think FNAF 3 is bad, per se, it’s certainly the weakest entry in the franchise. While I love Springtrap’s design and the atmosphere is still very strong, the jumpscares are just very cheap and overused due to being used as a mechanic rather than a penalty. That, and unlike other games in the series, it didn’t really do much to innovate or shake up the formula, and simply feels like ‘just another FNAF game.’ It’s a shame you haven’t played a FNAF game since, since I feel like every subsequent FNAF game (especially FNAF Sister Location) has been a vast improvement. (Sans FNAF World, of course, since it’s pretty much just a weird RPG spin-off.) In all honesty I had more fun playing the secret minigames in FNAF 3 than the actual game itself.

I don't know about that, I mean, you had the rebooting systems, shutting the vents, and playing the audio cues to directly interact with Springtrap, something you did not have in the first two games. The first game was just closing doors to keep animatronics out (you used the camera and lights to figure out where they are). The second got rid of the doors but gave you a mask and your flashlight can turn them away, and you gotta wind a music box. But yet, other than winding the music box and flashing a light at them, you don't interact with the animatronics at all. But, with Springtrap, you play the lures to keep him away from your office, to trick him into running around in circles all night, to make him think you're somewhere else. That kind of interaction with animatronics wouldn't be seen again until UCN (not counting World).

Street Fighter 1 might very well be the worst offender of this. I'd also nominate Persona 1, as while that game is still playable and has an interesting story, its gameplay is very sluggish and clunky compared to later games in the series. Edit: You know what? I also remembered how dated Earthbound Beginnings/Mother 1 was. Even as a Dragon Quest clone during the NES days the game felt like a drag to play through, and with the Eight Melodies being hidden away in remote places, the dungeons going on for way too long, and the game being too difficult for its own good, it's just a slog. Thank God both of its sequels were like 100x better than it was.

I thought it made a pretty good amount of sense at least before 4 or maybe 5. 4 really only ruins things by implying that the event the game was supposedly about that had been hinted at throughout the entire series was actually a totally unrelated *other* very similar event to the one 4 is about which had conveniently never once been mentioned.

I think Extra Credits has a video on why there’s such a lock of good horror games. I’ll have to rewatch it, but one of the elements I remember is that mystery and a sense of the unknown is critical to horror; when the threat becomes known, then one’s reaction is to run in and destroy it. Due to the recent focus on franchises as of recently, the long run of series like Resident Evil means that their mystery gradually fades away as stuff is revealed, hence why they’ve become more action than horror. And as for DS3, even if you aren’t going in looking for a horror game, the experience is spoiled with micro transactions up the ying-yang.

Honestly, I'd agree with RL on this one, by making some of the scares just general mechanics rather than outright punishments for a fuckup, it does dampen the final horror of Springtrap getting you. Not to mention the fact that he did say that the horror aspect for this list is subjective (and he thereby went with the one he was scared the most by in this list but the least in terms of FNaF). Comparing it to the rest, one can see where the horror actually is in the game, but comparing it to the other, actually horror driven games in the same franchise and 3 is comfortably the worst (and don't try using World as an excuse, that damn game is a FNaF themed RPG, nothing more).

Fnaf 3 is genuinely terrifying to me. The athmosphere is crude and disgusting and I love it. Once you realize that the threat your going against isn't just a regular animatronic but the rotting killer who was responsible for all the pain and suffering and who wants you dead. Being trapped with an intelligent serial killer without even being able to move is absolutely haunting.

I actually thought FNAF4 was worse than 3, mainly because making the game mechanics rely solely on really quiet audio ques was the worst thing you could do in this kind of game. 3 also at least had some interesting lore stuff but 4 was basically just confirming what everyone already figured out.

I'd have to agree with Aslak here. The previous games all had a motif, the first game was about physically blocking them with doors. The second was about using a flashlight and tricking them with a mask. The third was about making sure the guy never got to your office at all by using lures to trick him into running around in circles. The fourth is all about audio cues, and in a game with jumpscares... forcing the player to turn up the volume and focus on their ears only makes the jumpscares more powerful, lol.

The fact that you have to be quiet and listen to the breathing of the animatronic that is inches away from your face is actually terrifying. It's a great mechanic that is pretty unique for a horror game that I'm surprised isnt used more often.

DDLC I would say is the worst "horror" game. It's the most boring, predictable, time-wasting game I've ever watched. Plotwise, it's not even that good and it took like a couple of hours for something to actually happen and it ended up being a disappointment, especially when I could predict it from a mile away. Characters were just pure garbage and uninteresting, there's no personal growth or backstory or anything to actually make me care for them. Terrible writing as well, seriously, if Monika was self-aware this whole time she could have easily deleted from the start but if she wasn't then how did she even become self-aware? It doesn't make sense along with a couple of other things. As for the "horror" aspect, it's not even remotely scary and I don't even understand why it's scary. Honestly, the only good thing I could find is a few of the soundtracks in the game. I've seen horror games that are so bad it's good but this is not one of them. In terms of visual novels go, there are definitely way better ones than this piece of garbage. Don't get me started on the fanbase too, it's worse than a typical fanbase. It's really pathetic how people argue over who's the best girl or "waifu", along with fetishes and memes too and ti makes the game even worse than it is.

As I always love to point out, the Atari we know today isn't really Atari. It's actually a company called Infogrames basically wearing the skin of Atari. Hey, fun fact: Infogrames actually published the original Alone of the Dark game back in 1994. Good to know the company has stuck with the franchise all the way to the end. What a way to go, though.

If you don't mind potential spoilers, I'll list a couple: - I'd say the bad ending for Haunting Ground is the hardest to earn in the game since you have to actively make Hewie (the dog that accompanies Fiona throughout the game) hate you. The quickest way to do it would be to kick him over and over...yeah I don't have the heart to do that. - I guess getting the worst possible rank in Luigi's Mansion could be considered a bad ending, but you'd have pretty much any instance of you making money to get there. I think 5000 is the highest amount you can get for the Rank H ending.

I also notice that since 3 scott has been moving the franchise away from the template it built itself from, by having you running around in your room without cameras (fnaf 4), to making the "nights" task based and having every night being different (sister location), and throwing in you managing a buisness and not even seeing the animatronics your defending youself from a good chunk of the time (fnaf 6/Pizzaria Simulator). This is why i divided the based to two sagas in my mind (children saga is fnaf 1-3, while the Afton Saga is fnaf 4, SL, and FFPS).

I’d disagree. FNaF 2 did a lot more than FNaF 3 did. It has more solid mechanics, better jumpscares, and had more new ideas. It may have been a chore to complete in some regards, but most of the FNaF games are just that. FNaF 3, however, didn’t do so well in most of these places. Almost of all the mechanics are based purely on chance, not skill. While FNaF 2 has some chance thrown in, the core gameplay isn’t 100% chance based. You can still do pretty well as long as you have quick enough reactions and have a little luck on your side with movement timing. FNaF 3 is almost purely chance based, which ruins most of the enjoyment. Also, the Phantom animatronics are just not interesting. They’re just the characters with different textures and a slightly more broken look. They’re basically recolors. Springtrap is pretty neat, but that’s about it for interesting new animatronics. Overall, FNaF 3 just feels uninspired and lazy. The mechanics feels like they weren’t really thought out, the designs feel quite lazy, and there just isn’t a whole lot about the game that engages the player. FNaF 2 has issues for sure, but FNaF 3 has way more issues imo.
