You know, I like your video length and style, ik people ask for all kinds of things like a full session on this or longer that, but I love how you fit 2 or three videos in one, and it's still short! Now say if it were a specialized thing every once in a while, like a 15-20m vid on JUST genetics, or JUST how to wire up solar, then people who needed that in particular wouldn't mind taking the extra time (I'd definitely watch an extended genetics vid) but as for your overall style, the short, multifaceted vids are a hit with me 👍 if someones interested in at least one of the topics, they'll click, 'specially since they're so short, I don't know how you do it lol, right on

I've been having problems in cold weather with the mommas letting the babies get too cold ... Lost 34 kits . They were all inside a building not exposed to the elements at all. Every one of them had nesting boxes with hay and shavings in them as well as the hair that the Mama's pulled. The temperatures dropped down real cold, and we lost all of them. Had some real nice babies too. Made me just sick to my stomach when I had to dispose of all those babies. Five of the six females are bred back and I'm due to have more babies in about a week or so and I'm watching them like a hawk. And I'm making sure that they're nesting boxes are clean and have plenty of hay and shavings and that they have good clean water and plenty of food.

these brutal temperatures remind us all why mother nature typically does not have newborns in winter. I had one litter myself that resulted in one surviving kit. This happens, sometimes. Better luck with your next litters.

We resorted to a very carefully placed heat lamp to make sure our litter survived. I also did some additional research to learn how I could improve upon our nest boxes. After looking at some rabbit Blogs located in Canada I decided to added several layers of cardboard to the bottom and sides of the nest boxes and added a little more bedding than I would normally need to. This particular doe is a fantastic (read vicious, very protective mom) doe but she’s young and doesn’t pull tons of hair. Between the added cardboard and the heat lamp the entire litter is doing great! The previous litter to this one was born during a some 20 degree nights and contained a color I had been working two years to get(harlequin Rex). Needless to say, I was heartbroken! We didn’t get a harlequin in this new litter but at least now I know this pairing can produce harlequin. As long as we LEARN what we could have done differently it’s just part of the journey. We lost our very first two litters to extreme heat, so now I’ve learned both of ends of the spectrum. Hard lessons to be sure! Sorry for your losses. It’s never easy but just keeps us on our toes.

You should try making peruvian Conejo Chactado (squished rabbit) dish. Is an adaptation of the peruvian dish Cuy Chactado. The ingredients are: 1. 1 rabbit 2. 3 minced garlic cloves 3. 200 grams of cornmeal 4. Vegetable oil 5. Salt 6. Pepper 7. Cumin This dish also includes potato with peanut. You will need: 1. 5 potatoes parboiled in water with salt. 2. 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil 3. 1 chopped onion 4. 3 small tablespoons of grouned chilli 5. 1/2 cup of rabbit broth 6. 5 tablespoons of roasted peanuts (you should ground them( 7. Salt 8. Pepper 9. Cumin Preparation: 1. Season the rabbit with salt, pepper and cumin. Then you should leave it two hours. 2. Cover the rabbit with cornmeal and fry it in abundant oil. Here comes the squished part. In Perú we put stones over the rabbit when you fry it. This ensures that the rabbit fries evenly. For the potato with peanut: 1. In a pot heat the oil and put the onion. 2. Add the chilli and cook for two minutes. 3. Pour the rabbit broth. 4. Add the parboiled potatoes sliced in cubes and the peanut. 5. Season with salt, pepper and cumin Tips: 1. If you want the rabbit to be softer parboil the rabbit with salt and the garlic before frying. 2. Prepare the rabbit broth parboiling the head and the heart and the liver of the rabbit in 1 or 2 cups of water.

I would be interested to know more about winter yard runs as I have 2 that sit empty during the winter and would like to be able to utilize them better. I'm leery of keeping my rabbits on the ground when it's cold and worried about keeping them dry and clean with snow on the ground. Do you move them across the yard in the winter or keep them in one spot? Thank you so much! Your channel has been a great resource for me in my rabbit raising and I appreciate your content! Hey there, ive watched your channel for awhile now and started my own rabbitry about a year ago. I retired to the Philippines, and thought rabbits would be a great alternative to all the pork that we eat here. However im having a problem with one of my does. Her first litter was good, she had 8 kits, and 2 died. I figured 25% mortality wasn't bad, and i was quite happy. However her 2nd (7 kits), and now her 3rd (8 kits) litter have all died. I don't touch, or otherwise disturb the nest, and just let the doe do her job. She pulls her fur, and starts the process of motherhood, then just let's them die. What can i do (if anything) to help the doe with being a better mother, or should i just consider her for meat processing? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance

Try doubling her pellet portions 2cups a day when she’s nursing a litter -at least 2 to 3 times a week offer some whole oats to help with lactation - try another doe If the problem persists.

The eye color can be brown, blue gray, marbled and dark brown-preferred The hair is supposed to resemble a typical chinchilla but I would have to ask someone who shows regularly to know if any other color is a disqualification I’ve seen blue chinchillas and dark colored or even some with lighter shaded pearl. I’ve been line breeding for carcass qualities starting with nzw x cal crosses which is all I could find at the time. Now I have an exceptional line that is consistent with size and grow out time. They are mostly all white with some grey spotting. I’m noticing quite a few of them keep blue grey eyes for a long time but they seem to eventually change to a light yellow/brown when mature. Anyone know if that is a sign of maybe a carrier for vienna?
@TheRabbitryCenter

The Vienna Gene (vv) will maintain a blue Eye but if it’s the diluted gene(d) As the rabbit gets older the eyes get darker. It’s because the molecules in the eye grow larger with age.

So is it theoretically possible to get any Breed to be able to have any color, even the breeds that come in limited colors like a silver fox for example to get red or creme color? While remaining pure breed?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 2 жыл бұрын
Short answer yes. But in some cases that rabbit will no longer be recognizable do to disqualifying or unfavorable fur. There are many possibilities to color. There are many different names for colors and those names may change based on the breed of rabbit(which makes it even more confusing). But your purebred rabbit can certainly have a very different look compared to the traditional look if certain genes are present in the genotype make up and are allowed to be expressed. Your rabbit would still be purebred. It helped me learning the gene sets first and memorizing colors as I go. Many folks are cross breeding rabbits in some cases for hybrid vigor in the offspring or trying to achieve a different breed/color of rabbit. But mixing up rabbits tends to cause problems and surprises and it’s best to breed for favorable characteristics (the look you want). Hope that helps.

Only if at least one of the two rabbits breeding possessed the broken gene. This result is still random and if two recessives match you won’t see the dominant gene. Hears the deal, I’ve had rabbits for 15 years and been in 4-H for over ten and genetics is something that I’ve tried to studies for a long time, but all the letters never make any sense. So, I’m just gunna ask short and sweet and hopefully I can get a short sweet answer. I don’t want an answer with Aa Ba sort of explanation if possible, I just want to know “you will get _____ color” I raise pure breed Californians and I just got a tri color rex buck (no Pedigree)do you know the likely hood of getting something OTHER than Californian markings if I breed the tri buck to one of my does? If so what colors do you think it would be? Would I get tri? Harlequin? Something else? Or just the cali markings?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 2 жыл бұрын
Chances are Good. Cali and tri and whatever recessives match up. Your best bet is to test breed. Every rabbit is different based on the previous genes that were introduced by their particular breeding program. Try learning one locus at a time. Take notes. It’ll help you remember.
