Rob, just lost a 69 Chevelle in a garage fire. All interior gone, roof smashed in when garage ceiling fell on it and the fire fighters destroyed the trunk lid/taillight panel to hose down the trunk. My insurance company totaled it, but told me that it wasn’t their job to turn into the state per some new insurance statute. I sold it to a buddy to build a drag car out of, but it still has a clear title with the state of Illinois.

In the 80's there was a Mens clothing store called Syms. Their slogan was, "An educated consumer is our best customer". My boss at the time at the Brake place I worked at adopted a similar slogan (shared between employees only) "An Uneducated consumer is our best customer". While it's funny, it's mostly true. In the Automotive Repair world the less the customer knows, the more you can get away with. Ahhh the scumbagery!

*after 1949, all cars are also stamped on their frame with the VIN*, engines got stamped not long after. Okay with that said, most jurisdictions say that if 1 part is from a stolen car, the entire car it's on is also stolen. This is really really common in old Corvettes. Car gets stolen in the early 70s and stripped. Eventually, the Corvette is worth building (value), so 'that old frame out back' is used to replace the frame of car whose frame rotted. Recap, frame stolen, motor/birdcage are clean. Car gets bought by a collector in Saudi Arabia - US Customs verifies ALL vins... guess what, frame is from a stolen car. News proclaims about someone whose car was stolen and glory-be, it was found 20 years later in stellar shape. Yeah, not quite, but still.... verify all VINs when you buy a car... or be in the news.
@klaxie1873 жыл бұрын
This is what I didn't understand, the VIN has to be stamped somewhere on the body, on a structural element which is hard to replace, without being totaled. The C6 Vette has to have the VIN number somewhere on a structural part where you could verify. Whenever I bought a vehicle or went to check out one for someone, i searched for the VIN on the body and cross-checked with the papers. Usual spots for VIN placements are the Firewall, the sheetmetal where the front strut is mounted, under the front seat or somewhere in the trunk. PSA: Never trust a fucking sticker and before going to buy a car check where the VIN should be and how the letters look like.

Back in the early 90s there was a Nissan or Dodge dealer in northwest indiana (was Southlake Dodge or Southlake Nissan, I just forget which. Both were owned by the same person) that had a late model, maybe even less than a year old 300zx twin turbo that they sold to someone that ended up coming back as a stolen car when the new owner tried to register it. Iirc it came in on trade and they somehow didn't discover it was stolen until the owner tried to register it just like your Corvette story. It hurt the dealer's reputation pretty good and was in the newspaper.

Up here in the real Carolina I’ve done a few emissions inspections on cars and when the vin you enter on the registration doesn’t match the vin number the inspection machine pulls from the cars computer doesn’t match and that vin from the cars computer is in the database as a stolen car then the DMV is going to the address listed on that registration real quick. I inspected two Cadillac CTS-V’s the same month that were stolen by the same guy who had just got out of prison after 7 years for doing the exact same thing.

A friend deals in used equipment, the state police once stopped by to ask about a loader he had sold a couple years prior. Some dude had been stealing equipment, printing a new serial number tag, and running it through an auction house. Got caught by Deere. They ordered parts for one and the parts didn't fit. They checked for the s/n stamped in a casting and sure enough, it didn't match the label. There was a break in the s/n between the s/n that belonged on it, and the one he put on it. Or else he may have got away with it. And he made it easy enough for them to track it all down. All the models that had been stolen in his area, he dropped one off at that auction house a couple months later. He ran every single one through the same auction house. At the point the police showed up, it was a matter of verifying the equipment was stolen for purposes of restitution and to determine how many of which charges to bring him up on.

@MrWoodyBalto3 жыл бұрын
For one, It lets you insure your car for an agreed upon value. Not book value. If you say your car is worth 50K and they agree to insure it at that value you just pay a higher premium. Normal insurance will only pay out book value.
@channell113 жыл бұрын
It's stated value insurance-book value doesn't really work for older or custom cars. It also can save you some money since it'll be priced assuming that you only drive it rarely. You sometimes have to prove that you have other means of daily transportation.

This trick has been used in motorcycles for many years now. Coincidentally (not really), Florida is horrendously notorious for this. They steal the bike, change the vin for a salvage title bike with the same model, change the ecu of the bike completely (or at least do some tweaks to it), and sell the bike like it's legit. I've personally known several people that this happened to and hence why people hate buying motorcycles in Florida. And like Rabbit said, this can take you out quickly without you even knowing it. Shady times we live in. Stay safe out there!

Yes. The instrument cluster is the beginning and end of the “daisy chain” of technology in a car. You cannot replace an instrument cluster without flashing all other control units. Evan an early 2000s Mercedes has 13 control units that are “married” together. The climate control has the VIN and mileage logged, A Harbor Freight scanner can tell you a lot. Take a code scanner to any OBD2 car purchase. VIN plates and door stickers are easy.
