Could be that it's just a myth. There is a resent podcast here on YT with Brown, where the topic was the early versions of the 5150. He said that they were starting from scratch with a new design. It would make sense though, as he did use a Solano preamp at the time. I remember it, like he said that Eddie wanted something completely new. He always liked to experiment and building new stuff. But try searching for it, it's been a while since I watched it. 🙂

I have been blending two amps in my rig for about 2 years now. I used a Mesa TC50 and an EVH 5153 50S for a while and transition from both 3 channel to Mesa TC50 and a Supro Galaxy 50w class AB amplifier. Experimented more and settled on a Marshall 2266 Vintage/Modern 50w single channel with KT66s and a Supro Galaxy 50 with 6L6s. I have been truly amazed at the clarity and low end resonance of the Supro and the Midrange bite from the Marshall 2266 VM. The blend amazingly well through a 1960A G12T75 cab. I run my wet effects through the the Supro's tube buffered FX Loop and have two preamp signals running to them both. Fortin Grind>Highwind Direwolf MKII>ABY> Marshall 2266VM. Walrus Audio Emissary>EQD Plumes>ABY>Supro Galaxy50. To retain the low end of both signals I use a Way Huge Saucy Box in t Walrus Audio Julia V2 into both amps. Truly the best rig I have built. It allows so much control over the amazing tones of both amps and also give you abilities like cutting the low end of both amps on riffs and the ability to bring it back two both with a stomp on the Way Huge Saucy Box. Ambience reverb and delay through the Supro and a sharp and dry crisp crunch from the Marshall. Love this series Bea! Cannot wait for your next 6L6 EL34 amp blending. I love blending EL34s with KT66s and KT88s. 6L6s and KT66s give you the best of EL34s without a low-end cut while the 6L6s do their thing. The doubling sound it a chorusing phase essential to my inspirational tonality of Adam Jones. I don't own a Diezel VH4 and Marshall Super Bass that's SL Plexi modded but I ge the closest I have ever with this current setup. Keep making blending amp heads a tonal must for any gearhead!!

Sounds amazing man. The MXR 5150 overdrive pedal solves the problem of noise as it's got a noise gate, need to tweak it. I use a Mesa Boogie dual rectifier with a Marshall JCM2000 TSL 100W. Notable difference as the Marshall's have more mids, a fantastic combination.
@toom60873 жыл бұрын
Keep going on with this high gain harmony thing. Love it ! I used to blend the SLO100 (mine is an original one) with old Rectifiers (Rev F or Rev G). This is the best high gain sound ever. I don't like the 5150. I had one in the 90's. When you play a Soldano SLO, you don't want a 5150 anymore. The EQ of the old Rectifiers work the same as the EQ of the old SLO. Best EQ ever made in the universe. The Rectifier gives just more low end, a tsunami of bass (the 2 channels Recto, not the 3 chan). The SLO stay articulate. Both amp blended is just perfection. The Rectifier Rev F is better for riffs, the Rev G for solos because of its parallel FX loop for the analog mono delay (Boss Dm-2w, Way-Huge EchoPuss, JHS PantherCub, etc). I keep the SLO for both. No FX in the SLO. So I play wet/dry. The Steve Morse recipe. Another high gain harmony you can try : - Diezel VH4 channel 3 with old Dual Rectifier 2 channels on high gain. My Diezel is a stereo one (2x50W), loaded with 6L6s, so I do a kind of wet/dry/wet parallel thing with. - Mesa Mark IIC+ with the Diezel VH4 for the clean. On high gain, this is Metallica. And on the crunch, you will get AC/DC mixed with Santana, strange but good ! I don't like the Diezel VH4 with the SLO. - Bogner Ecstasy red chan (mine is a 25th anniversary 101A, means 6L6s) with Dual Rectifier 3 channels on high gain. It's really good on solos for the modern/vintage vibe. - And of course for rhythm guitar : old Marshall JCM800 (mine was made in 1982) with the old 2 channels Triple Rectifier. The spank and the boom at the same time :) The JCM800 is so loud that I need the Triple 150w Recto (a Rev F too) to play with. PS : 4x12 cabs loaded with V30 all the time here, no load boxes of shit. Old school. I own the Maxon too. As a purist, I swear this pedal is shit. You think it's better at the beginning, then you realize it kills the tone of legendary amps. The 808 is an heresy. You just need to play better, stronger, and your amps will give you the best. Especially if you play both amps in parallel.

The trick with the overdrive is to lower the gain on the amp, scoop the mids slightly, and then crank the volume and increase the tone til you have the right amount of bite. On a 5150 I run lead channel gain at 3.5/10, bass at 4/10, mids at around 3.5/10, and treble/pres at 5/10. That's a good starting point for me for a typical tight metal tone through a normal Mesa Rectifier cab with V30s, pretty much regardless of pickups. I've run similar sounds on strat single coils, tele single coils, passive humbuckers, active humbuckers, etc. all going from a similar starting point And IMO most overdrives sound at their tightest/most aggressive with the tone at about 80% to 100% turned up, since the tone knob is essentially a sweep control for a mid boost (and bass/treble rolloff). The further you turn it up, the higher the frequency you're boosting, which means that when it's all the way up you can get disgusting amounts of chunky upper midrange attack and saturation without too much harsh treble or fast palm mutes blending together from low frequencies
