My overview and first impressions of the Raceface Chester and OneUp Composite Pedals.
RaceFace Chester pedals vs One Up Composite Pedals
www.raceface.com/products/det...
www.oneupcomponents.com/produ...
One Up Composite
10 steel replaceable pins per side
Height: 13.3mm, 18.5mm with pins
Listed weight: 355 grams
Actual Weight: 359 grams
Platform size: 115mm x 105mm
4.13” x 4.5” (platform)
Race Face Chester
8 steel replaceable pins per side
Height: 15mm, 18.4mm with pins
Listed Weight: 340 grams
Actual Weight: 357 grams
Platform Size: 110mm X 101mm
3.9” x 4.52” (4” of platform, actually touches the shoe, due to slant at the end of the pedal)
When I first started with flat pedals, I was just using regular shoes with the big giant, aluminum Pedaling Innovations pedals... 3.75” X 5.6”!
Coming from Clipless pedals, these really gave me a huge amount of confidence.. especially being new to mountain biking.... helping with my form and technique…
After quite a while, I was riding with a friend who was in the same exact position I was when I was using clipless pedals… everything seemed more difficult and frustrating than it should be… He was relying more on being connected to the pedals, than learning technique that would increase his confidence and riding ability…
I just HAD to share my experience with him… so I gave him my pedals 
Which left me with a really good chance to try some other pedals out!

I'd love to support my local shop(s), but they just don't have competitive pricing. And if you're not there to spend $2-5k on a bike, they don't want you in there. Can't tell you how many shops I've been to visit and it's all the same cold shoulder can't wait for you to leave feeling. Even if they had competitive pricing, Amazon's automated emails are more courteous to me than the people in the shops.

It's tough.. because I feel the SAME feeling in ALOT of bike shops... I usually give a LBS about 3 tries.... and I try just about all of them (just stopping in... not buying anything)... and unfortunately, MOST do not pass the test... but I quickly weeded out the bulk of them.. and have now found the shop that is freakin' amazing! ... I pop in there all the time.. whether it's just because i'm wandering downtown, need maintenance, or a tube... I still HAVEN'T bought a bike from them.. and they treat me (and everyone else I know) AMAZING.. very low pressure.. (everyone from around the valley drives out to them)...they're just riders who are passionate about MTB! :) maybe I'm lucky, and most people don't have that kind of shop... but it took me a while to find it.. and they'll always have my business... whether it's maintenance.. small parts.. or when it's time to buy a new bike :) I'm thinking about doing a vid on "Pick a bike shop, BEFORE picking your bike".. (IF you plan on buying your bike in a shop... I completely see the appeal of online bike sales). showcasing how important it is to find a shop that will stand by their bikes/products... and having help with warrantee issues... and their contacts with the brands' sales reps...and having good mechanics is important as well...I like the feeling of supporting my community's businesses... in-turn, supporting my neighbors' livelihoods (if they do a good job, and aren't dicks) there are totally valid points to both sides of the "argument"... i think there's a good middle ground (if you have a great LBS)... and that's where I like to sit :)

"Everyone from the valley" ... Is this Phoenix? If so, could you share which shop this is? I've never been in one anywhere near downtown, so it's unlikely I've been in this one. Thanks for your replies.

OH - sorry :) the "Grand Valley" in Grand Junction/Fruita, Colorado :) The shop is Over The Edge Sports in Fruita, CO... Which is a good 15-20 minute drive west of Grand Junction... and everyone drives from Grand Junction to Fruita for this bike shop :) Fortunately, I just moved from Grand Junction to Fruita (5 blocks away from the shop) haha...

Grand Junction and Fruita have amazing trails... and I'm only 1.5 hours away from Moab... as well as being pretty close to Crested Butte, Aspen, Vail... etc...

Oh, that pizza looked awesome! :-) I opted for the Chesters, totally forgot about the OneUps after gathering lots of feedback online, but like from a year ago. But, I did remember the reputation that Race Face built via consumer feedback on the Chesters, so I just went with that. Totally happy, bought a pair of Chester for each of my 5 bikes, so I'm all in. LOL! Happy New Year, and careful with those drop-offs, man! OUCH!

Excellent review. I tried clips for several years before I gave up and went Flats all the way. Never looking back. I run the Deity composite pedals that are very similar to the Chester, if not identical, on some of my bikes. But as they wear out, I'm looking for an affordable replacement. This review will ensure that I'll check out the One-Up pedals. Also One-up is a pretty cool company who seems to care a lot about proper pricing of good quality components, so I'm all for supporting them.

seriously.. they did a really good job on that pedal...as I get better at NOT pedal striking... I might consider the alloy ones..
@mtbboy1993
@mtbboy1993 6 жыл бұрын
For me alloy pedals work great, but only reason I get pedal strikes are my joint issues, it puts me in weird positions some times, one time I went over the bars, one time bars turned to left, But I don't care about scratching my pedals, they will be scratched in a crash anyway, even composite pedals will get scraped up, but not as visible. in my opinion long big platform out weigh the weight gain.
@TheCrashingDad
@TheCrashingDad 6 жыл бұрын
Johannes Nilsen - ugh... Sometimes fatigue will cause bad positioning and cause pedal strikes too... For me... Yeah... It's crazy how pedal strikes can cause OTB!
@mtbboy1993
@mtbboy1993 6 жыл бұрын
for me its my wrists, elbows, shoulder, hips, ankle, all fingers, that cause all of my crashes, apart from when I try something new and tricky,or ride on unstable surface. but big platform definitely improved my control over the bike,but having bigger platform won't cure my bad joints, I have have made the bike as comfy & fitting as possible, I went from 720 bars to 800 bars helped with my elbow issue, much less slipping, unless i do technical trails. with standard pedals my feet would bend on landings and my whole bony was going downwards, with catalyst this does not happen, so for dropping off walls and such will make a huge difference. silicone grips also made a huge difference, much less vibrations and fatigue,the carbon bars dampens vibrations too. my latest upgrade/change is Absolute Black Oval chainring, Can't wait to try it out properly.
@mtbboy1993
@mtbboy1993 6 жыл бұрын
Fatigue will definitely do that, after 4 hours of riding, with at least 3 with single track, up and down,manuals are a struggle.

Have ridden the Chester’s the last year with about 1200 miles on them. Been great. Just got a set of OneUp composites earlier this week and they are head and shoulders better than the Chester’s which is hard to believe. But bigger usable platform (whopping 10mm front to back) longer better positioned and more pins and you get an amazing pedal. If you have $50 to spend on pedals one ups are the way to go.

I have the one up on my fat bike and they are great , even on warmer damp days where the snow is sticky ,they still offer plenty of grip.My personal favourite are the dmr vault, almost double the price but I’ve had them for 6 years and are still going strong.

Thanks!... your Vans classics aren't working out at all? I personally think that a good MTB specific shoe is worth it... they're a bit stiffer. the rubber is designed for flat pedal pins... the Free Rider Pro shoes have a hard toe to prevent toe damage during foot-sandwich incidents with rocks on the trail... Good point on the OneUp. I always find I'm pushing my feet in towards the crank arms. I'm riding with Nike SB's, used to have the Crank Bros 5050's, which were in the same price point, but it has the fatter pins with the allen inside. The Chester and OneUp's both have the thin pins.
