Tortle/Tortoise... Most people think Turtle when they hear Tortle but I think Tortoise. Even more so when I see images like the one you guys used.

According to the PHB, "the Primordial language includes the Auran, Aquan, Ignan, and Terran dialects, one for each of the four elemental planes. Creatures that speak different dialects of the same language can communicate with one another." So Primordial would be like Shakesperian English, where we all basically understand what it means but nobody here on the Material plane really uses it for everyday speech anymore. Then the different elemental dialects would be like Glaswegian and Cockney and Newfie and Strine, where they can all basically get the gist of what each other is saying, but it'd be hard for a person to actually switch from one dialect to the other without spending some time getting used to it first.

I play an extremely old wild magic sorceror tortle named Franklin Ornata. He’s lived past the life expectancy and tried to pass on but wasn’t able to for some reason. Somehow he found himself in the astral plane and contact with the weave gave him wild magic. The process also fried his brain a bit, in addition to the dementia from his age. He now works as a detective with crown security and hands out random butterscotches and wild magic surges. I’m enjoying playing a character so out of the norm in race, age and class. “Sorry, I’m bad with names. When you come into contact with the astral sea it tends to fry your noggin. Butterscotch?”

Duh Buh I had a player make a tortle samurai in a 3.5e game. It was not bad at all. Ninja turtles the inspiration but he played him different and where the game took the character, wasnt a ninja turtle. At all. This race is great.

Since you're trying to rationalize Primordial, here is how I look at it: Primordial is Latin. A "dead" language where other elemental forms stem from.

So now that I've watched the video I'm going to go make a tortle wizard that always goes in to its shell at the start of combat so it can just cast spells from inside it. I'll have to make sure that works but that my plan.

@@lucasbiermann257 it would work you would just need to pick your spells wisely so that you can cast them without having to pop out of your shell; after thinking about it a bard could be better but it all up to the gm of the game really if it works. I myself having the curse of the dm find myself homebrewing alot of stuff so I would alow some spells to be cast when you are in the shell, I have a list of what spells can be used. I think that when in the shell they would have room to move there hands and they can still talk but they can't use components because they are on the outside. I let them bring enough components for 1 spell into the shell when they go in.

Sea turtles live on average 50 years to 100. Though some tortoise can live up to 200 or possibly longer. Though these are modern gwneragtions of these creature, I imagine a 900 or so years ago they may have lived longer and further back longer still. So if Tortles are some combination of sea turle and tortoise (as there name implies) I imagine theme loving close to 120-150 or longer. Which reminds me, the idea of all these huge monsters, especially sea monsters from ancient societies isn't so unbelievable. Even today we have sea living creautes that are older than any living humans grandma. Imagine that creatures grandma, living a few hundred years withous water pollution, not only effecting them but their food source. A 900 year old giant squid without gallons of oil and natural evolution into imaginably lesser creatures, this is maybe some 800-1000 ago. And you'd get a kraken fully capable of sinking a ship. Kododo dragons and crocodile monitors (which are not actually crocodile at all) would likely have had a not unsimilar effect; in that they grew larger and lived longer, which to human's who resectively where shorter than modern humans would easily explain the idea of dragons.

Am I to understand that I could play a tortle barbarian and just pump my points into constitution to have up to 20 ac at level one without any dexterity investment. AND I get a +2 to my strength? Tortle barbarian is broken! Good video, guys.

When calculating ac in 5th edition you can only ever use one method of getting ac (meaning they don't stack). So a tortle barbarian would get its ac by 10 + Dex mod + con mod or by using the natural armour of 17.
