A woman goes on a date with a guy 'outside her type'.
RACHEL FROM NEW YORK is used with permission from Jeanne Jo. Learn more at powderkegmedia.com.
Rachel lives in Los Angeles, and is a recent transplant from the East Coast, starting anew as she deals with a difficult breakup. Despite her new California lifestyle of juicing and jogging, she clearly hasn't gotten over her ex and unable to embrace the laidback nature of her new home.
After a fraught conversation, she decides to go on a date with a guy "outside her type." But the date -- a Black man who's an entrepreneur -- goes off the rails, revealing just how out of place Rachel really is.
Writer-director Jeanne Jo, along with co-writer Keenan Coogler, has crafted a clever, gloriously awkward comedy short that combines wit and social observation, examining how tricky social issues can seep into everyday personal interaction -- and just how crazy first dates can be.
It's an acidic take on the typical romantic comedy, built on a foundation of intelligent writing with an eye and ear for self-delusion. Essentially a set-up leading into a classic two-hander, the revelation of story and character happens primarily through dialogue, which here is sharp and smart, but most importantly true to character.
Taking place in Los Angeles, the film establishes anxious, edgy Rachel in the sunlit environs and lush greenery of Los Angeles. She's a fish out of water, and she's about to realize just how out of her element she really is, especially when she meets her date, a relaxed, affably confident Black man.
Both main actors -- Scout Durwood as Rachel and Walter Fauntleroy as her date -- have a nice back-and-forth that reveals potential chemistry between the pair. The masterful dialogue handles the subject of race in a way that feels both funny and true, as Rachel goes out of her way to avoid it, and avoid seeming racist.
Yet Rachel keeps stepping into tricky waters with various gaffes, many of which threaten to derail the date. But in the ironies of all ironies, a telling anecdote reveals just how neurotic Rachel is -- and proves crazy is crazy, no matter what your identity.
RACHEL FROM NEW YORK feels very much like a snapshot of one woman's dating life, overlaid with a filter that punches up the brights with heightened dialogue but throws her flaws and contradiction into a high-contrast spotlight. Entertaining, light and spiky all at once, it ends with just a sliver of hope for Rachel -- and a knowing laugh for the audience, who will have no illusions about Rachel's future misadventures.

Never talk about an ex on the 1st date. I thought everyone understood that rule of dating. Lol. When you over-share your info, you make yourself very vulnerable to be judged by a total stranger. Keep a first date light and causal and do not drink alcohol to get loose tongued or loose legged. Lol

True value isnt scared of vulnerability, its there, in your face,its confident, take it or leave it and people that value your honesty will see through your past and not judge you by it, I thought people learned this in high school but clearly many aren't exposed to this. There are no "rules" to dating ffs be yourself & you will attract those that value who you truly are

@Vasanthi If you don't see how that's wrong, you must be a sociopath. Bringing a baby into the world is a serious commitment and life-changing event, and tricking a person into it without their consent is a despicable act. If the woman desperately wants a baby but the guy does not, then she should move on and find another guy who wants the same as her. You need to do some serious soul searching if you think it’s ok to just completely screw a guy over like that.

So, the guy shows up, immediately tries to put someone he just met on the spot with a "you people" joke, hands her a coupon for a beauty salon implying her looks aren't up to snuff, accuses her of dating him because of the novelty of his race, and then comforts her into telling a very personal truth about herself that he then judges (though he says he is not) and leaves as a result of it. I think people are missing the point of this exchange. The story isn't about her having problems or being a bad person. It is about their incompatible contrast between the two characters... but not in the sense that she is "bad" and he is "good". Rather, the male character does everything he can to dig into her past, make her feel uncomfortable, and reveal little about himself. On the other-hand, the female character asks very few beyond-superficial questions, does everything to make the male comfortable (to a fault), and is a totally open book (again, to a fault). Notice how we never get to learn what his secret is that "you aren't allowed to get mad at". As the audience, we don't have the same level of information on him and, for some reason, we judge him more positively. This then puts us in a position of superficiality. We are judging the characters based on different degrees of information. One positively because of little information and suave persona. One negatively because of an overabundance of information and scattered persona. Think of how we judge a politician or actor or attractive person across the room in a crowded bar. We take preference to the well formed we know nothing about over the ill formed we know more about. Even if they are, like the female is, honest and accountable regarding their past. It's worth noting that I'm not defending her actions, I'm condemning our own. This point is REALLY impressively hit home by the waiter approaching the woman and hitting on her with the only information he has on her. Notice how the college point of the conversation is brought up when he drops off the drinks. Therefore, this is all he knows about her. One positive common element and that he finds her attractive. This then pushes him to approach her without knowing the negative elements of her past MOMENTS after another guy dipped.

@Justin Robert - Good analysis, and I agree with your assessment to a certain point. The simplest way to say all that you’ve said above is: both he and she, were unreliable narrators. When both eventually relay their brief encounter to their respective friends, each version of events will be biased and unreliable. Both went into the date with prejudices (we ALL have them), and both left the date with their prejudices being confirmed. Put simply: two azzholes finding each other, but thinking the other is more of an azzhole than they themselves are.
@LeeFazzani
@LeeFazzani 3 жыл бұрын
There’s no fault in judging someone for deceptively causing a non-consensual pregnancy. This is not a small bit of information... It is huge. Even more telling is the way she casually brought it up as though it was no big deal, like she did nothing wrong. This gave us a good idea of her trustworthiness and mental health. You could see the disappointment on the guys face as he left. First date awkwardness aside, they seemed to be getting along well up until she dropped the “crazy bomb” on him. This isn’t to say that he was good and she was bad, just that she had serious issues, and he understandably wasn’t interested in becoming involved.
@veronicajohnson5983

Lee Fazzani Of course she was a bad person what they’re saying is not to justify her actions but to say that we don’t know that he hasn’t done anything that couldve been even worse possibly. The main reason we label them “good” and “bad” is because of the strong contrast in their demeanor. Confidence really is the ultimate mask. For all we know he made that excuse to leave because he didn’t like the way she looked and in the beginning was just able to brush it off by saying he really did like tall girls. Tone is everything’s like when she was talking about how she wasn’t just using him because he was black we didn’t believe her because she was nervous defensive and fidgety while saying it. We believed he liked tall girls because he was calm cool and collected while saying it. But for all we know they were both lying.

No because her friend texted her that her cat is sick (meaning she did send it to her friend). That naturally gives an insight of the nature of the person sitting opposite.He didn't want to make the other person uneasy about her word errors (rather personality error) which she on her own realised ,but at the same time he straightforwardly and politely made his point clear that he wanted to leave out of the business which is a common response to insult.
