Liberty, democracy allows for freedom of speech, though and ideas. This allows also for ideas, and the expression of them, that are anti liberty and anti democracy. So democracy carries within the seeds of its destruction. This is the reason why our founding fathers said that our democracy depends on the level of education and how well informed its citizens are, "a republic (which is a democracy) if you can keep it". That is why education is so rabidly attacked by the right. Why they have taken over our sources of information.

You make an intteresting observation -- there were only one or two channels and they were not politicized, they were staffed with true journalists. Everyone heard the same news, and differences were differences of opinion and interpretation, not facts. I really blame the proliferation of media outlets for fostering an attitude where there are no more facts, just boils down to what YOU hear vs. what I hear. (not you and me personally - just a reference to the rise of media bubbles). I wish it had never changed.

I was proven WRONG. i wont lie. before he was voted in i was one of the ones who refused to vote. i dont trust any politician. they are all natural born liars. and then alot of them go on to improve it by becoming lawyers. but his election was the thing that got me out the door and into the voting booths. I felt i couldnt complain if i was a part of the problem. we, the american people, fell into the same trap that the germans did. we got complacent and we ignored the danger signs. the only way to fix it is to stay engaged and use our rights to fight to keep them. we need stricter common sense gun laws and less gerrymandering, we need to strengthen out voting rights legislation to stop the GOPs constant attack to try and add more and more restrictions that tend to target mostly democrat and minority voters. and we need to start adding rules for make up of the supreme court and congress it self. age and term limits. we also need to protect individual rights.

When he claimed it, he handed me a $20 bill, even though it took me less than 2 seconds to find it because the closet was otherwise empty. A few years before that, I worked the Christmas season at Tavern on the Green. Donald Trump came in with all of his children, his mother and Marla Maples. The place was a madhouse. Totally crowded, busy, etc. I handed him back the 6 coats they had checked in, and he gave me..... a $5 bill. Rachel Maddow has done a public service by calling attention to a seldom remembered chapter of American history! The one and only point I disagreed with was the word "shocked" in her reaction (though not "offended" and "horrified") to what she uncovered. The reason i was not shocked was I am aware that enough hate prevails in this country (then and now) that many Americans felt America was on the wrong side by fighting against hitler's Germany. I never forgot driving into my parents' neighborhood and feeling deeply offended, though hardly surprised to see a huge pro-hitler poster on the wall looking at an apartment window 2 blocks away from my Mom and Dad's then house. One of my ancestors founded the Northwest Company with 3 other guys. This was one of the 2 major Canadian companies in the fur trade. He married an Ojibwa woman, and their descendants (or husbands if they were women) continued to occupy senior positions in that company and in the Hudson's Bay Company after they merged with them. Their way of doing business does not conform to the Astor model. I think there is something to learn here about the difference between the two countries.

CBS had Dan Rather and NBC had Brian Williams news reporter who confessed about lying or spicing up news stories instead of just reporting the facts. News liars are worse now as everything is political and social activists.

I always liked Tom Brokaw. He had a wonderful way of delivering the news.
