@@troycambo I’m not a fan of either of these people but how is critiquing her book “exploiting” her? Criticism of literature has existed for thousands of years, and it’s a given to expect it when you put a book out into the public. Not only that, Rachel had posted critiques of other youtuber books, so it’s not like she was targeting Gabbie specifically. Gabbie seems like the type of person who cannot bear to be put in her place, she thought that by putting out a poetry book she would be an artist, and she couldn’t handle somebody comparing her to real artists.

Reviews are for the readers, not for the writers. The amount of times an author has had a tantrum about someone giving a poor review of their work is ridiculous at this point, but in Gabby's case it feels especially egregious as she was already a public figure who should have an understanding that critique is part of the job. I really just don't think she's suited for any kind of fame, since she responds to any criticism in the same way.

Jimmy messaging Rachel to soften her review was so inappropriate. If you don’t want people to say “mean” things about your work then don’t publish it. You don’t get to put something out there, FOR MONEY, and demand everyone shower you with praise or else face years of harassment and abuse. Authors shouldn’t be engaging with reviews of their work anyway, but if you’re going to subject yourself to it, you cannot blame anyone else for the way it makes you feel. Anyway, other than the terrible topic, this is such a lovely interview. Rachel is so kind and thoughtful, Doggolescence is such a sweet little project, and the more coverage of her side of the story, the better. Gabbie has massive reach that she’s consistently been heinously irresponsible with. Also, Reads With Rachel mention 🎉🎉 another excellent KZbin Rachel.

Jimmy Snow is what happens when you deconstruct your religion but neglect to deconstruct ego/exceptionalism, patriarchy/misogyny, power/fame, etc. I have so much respect for post-religious people who have really unpacked not just their previous religious ideology, but also all of the baggage that comes along with it that doesn’t necessarily harm them personally. Yeah :/ Jimmy was one of my first intros to survivors of American cults, I found Zelph on the Shelf (legendary, did the work Jimmy didn’t with deconstructing) through watching him when they used to collab. How he handled this situation especially after how much he spoke about processing his own experiences as being an abusive partner was… really depressing and infuriating. I felt like he was returning to patterns of abuse by aligning with and prioritizing another abuser, Gabbie, over seemingly everything he had built, and that view made it easier to empathize with him. But the ways he doubled down, and how he switched from processing his own trauma to an amazing atheist style call in show, where he and usually Mormon cult members just screamed at each other and did debate bro zingers with no actual conversation happening at all, a style of content I find deeply unappealing and tbh, useless… it was time to let him go. I do hope he’s able to move past the state of self that made all this shit okay in his mind. But it’s really, really not okay.

I find it interesting the way Rachel considers her memory to be an age issue. I personally believe trauma could have a lot to do with it. Since then I’ve began studying racism & feminism in uni and I’ve been thinking a lot about what kindness and community means. Rachel time and time and time again shows her kindness, her goodness, & her strength that informs her passion to fight for the right thing. Gabbie had to turn to religion to be perceived as a good person, but Rachel just is a good person and doesn’t have to fear god in order to be one. From everything she has experienced, Rachel could have turned out like Gabbie yet her goodness pushes her in the opposite direction. When talking about ‘how far Gabbie has come’ we must also mention how strong Rachel is. I’m really happy to hear Rachel’s side about this because you can see that what Gabbie did had an effect on her, yet here she being so so so so so respectful while saying her peace. You want my man. You're obsessed with me. You're lying about SA allegations." And now: "You're responsible for the lustful thoughts of men and their objectification of your body." Gabbie has always been so cripplingly insecure that she cannot help seeking the approval of men and bringing down other women to do so. The reviews of her latest "apology" are all over the map, and I'm actually exactly where Rachel is/was. Prior to that, I thought, "Well, she seems to be doing better, so good for her and everyone else. Perhaps we don't need apologies." But THIS. What is this? Making apologies to no one and laughing all sing-songy your way through them is so unserious... That took no effort on her part, but it was a quick way to give herself all the credit in the world. this part did give me a chuckle: "there's like 18 months between us, if that, have some respect" "is that all there is between you? _oh dear_ " because the realisation on Vangelina's face is so fucking funny, like gabby acts as if she's so much older and more mature than everyone when her behaviour is much more akin to an older twin born 1 minute earlier. There's not a whole lot more maturity 18 months can bring you at the age this all began, let alone now. I wholeheartedly agree it's so disrespectful to ignore someone's adulthood by constantly referring to them as a girl, boy, child, kid etc, and it's something that bothers me so much (I'm 28). To infantilise someone is demeaning and dismissive of their life experience, it's almost dehumanising to a point as it's denying an entire very important section of their life. It's so wild that even today people STILL feel the need to put others down to raise themselves up.

the argument of “you hate it so you parodied it” is asinine when you think about weird al yankovic. yes, he is a man and rachel made the point to say that men don’t get consequences for parodying, but weird al is so very respectful with his work. he asked artists if he could parody their songs, and, if they said no, he wouldn’t do it. that’s why he never did a prince parody. prince said no. infamously, even worse’s album cover was a parody of michael jackson’s bad cover. weird al is an outlier in this, yes, but he has never once said a bad thing about the artists he parodied. if people thought parodying something was akin to doing drag, exaggerating something for the sake of entertainment, i think more people would get that parody is an art form.

I think one of the reasons she took Rachel Oates so personally is because her review wasn't personal, but Gabbie hanna believes her work is amazing but that she gets a lot of hate because people just don't like her. Someone like James Marriott talked about the book how she expects to be "attacked", she hates it still, but its all about her dating history, vines, etc. so any criticism she focuses on these points and blames it on their general dislike of her. Rachael Oates was probably one of the few reviews that didn't care that it was written by Gabbie Hanna and just talked about content, which she took as a bigger personal attack on her instead of all the more "vapid" public reasons she is used to seeing and can usually blame the criticism on. (and obviously the misogyny).

I think GH sent Rachel the second book with the intention of roasting her feedback, like entrapment style. Cos it’s “good tv” to make drama. I loved both of Rachel’s reviews of those awful books - they were intelligent and insightful and funny and human. I don’t think she should change anything, cos GH was only ever going to lash out at some point cos it’s how she keeps her subs.

Gabbie was jealous because an educated, intelligent woman told her the truth.

It's bizarre to me that legal action hasn't been taken against Gabbie. Those were horrible things to say about people and incited harassment. And this is just ignoring how egregiously elitist she is over a subjective form of expression.
@GreenFrog224Ай бұрын
I actually think it was really important for Rachel to defend her intelligence in her response to Gabbie. I've always believed that Gabbie took so badly to Rachel's videos because they weren't just making fun of her like others. She sat there an broke down literary techniques, compared to other works, and gave genuine feedback. She made a video that Gabbie couldn't defend by saying "they dont like me and are just doing it to bully me" (though she did attempt this). That's why Gabbie's entire diatribe was based around her claiming Rachel's lack of intelligence, if she could get people to believe that Rachel isn't intelligent then she can remove any legitimacy from Rachel's videos.

39:45 yesss we need more women to stand up for themselves and to not be ashamed of having skills such as intelligence!! very glad she said this, and the fact that this would in turn help her audience become more confident with their own skills without needing to hide them from misogynists as well!!!

Gabbie is triggered by people moving on and dropping the topic, triggered by people fighting back, triggered by anyone shes attacked saying ANYTHING and living their lives, basically. Combine that with the clear projection, aggression, grandiose behaviors.... narcissism or some other cluster b disorder. I'm so proud you and Rachel are still speaking on this, still giving your perspective and yes, Rachel is owed a sincere apology on HER terms. Gabbies video was posturing and the fact that its clear she hasnt reached out privately to the people she KNOWS shes attacked says EVERYTHING. It takes strength to even continue talking when shes trying to exhaust and strawman people into silence, and I'm so glad you two did this video.

GH was bothered by Rachel more than anyone else BECAUSE Rachel is educated. Because it was a valid and thorough criticism and there was no ignorance or silliness used that GH could use in dismissing Rachel’s opinion. So she name called, and insulted Rachel. Truly disgusting behavior

I’ve been watching Rachel for years, since she made the first Pearl video. She’s one of the least threatening people on the Internet; the only reason for people to attack her is that they see her as an easy target.
@HaapainenRouskeАй бұрын
Gabbie Hannah describing Rachel as "toxic, abusive, exploitative bully" is 100% projection. Like, that's you, Gabbie! You can't pretend that you're so above it when being toxic is almost part of your brand. If she only really cared as little as she claims she does... would make everything a whole lot easier instead of still being petty that a reviewer didn't like a poetry book that she obviously didn't put that much effort or care into in the first place. I get that if someone tears down your passion project that you worked really hard for and tried your best with your craft... but it was just so lazy. At least it felt like it. So it's clearly not even about the art itself, Gabbie just chose the worst possible profession for someone who isn't mentally well enough to handle well founded critique. It's just not going to end well.

I’ve never understood the backlash that Rachel got for her reviews of Gabbie’s poetry. It never seemed unfair or malicious to me, it was just critical. Also, she didn’t always have negative things to say about Gabbie’s work! Yes, she got more snarky after Gabbie continued to lash out and/or make digs at her about her review(s). I can’t honestly say that I would’ve acted any differently, had I been in Rachel’s position. Her initial review wasn’t that bad, though. She had pretty well-measured, constructive feedback about the majority of it. Reviews are for the readers. If you put your work out there, you’re going to receive criticism. You have to figure out how to receive that and cope with it. You’ll also receive praise! Focus on that. Take the criticism in stride, and figure out if it resonates with you in some way. Grow from there, if you want to. So much more of that whole fiasco is on Gabbie than it is on Rachel.

Gabbie reminds me very much of a mean girl that never grew out of her mean girl phase, especially all her new "I'm being the bigger person, and I'm sorry to anyone who had a problem with me" has such a mean malicious lean to it. I never thought highly of her, at most I was neutral about her when she seemed to be "doing better" but I think she really is deep down just a nasty mean person who cant look at anything she has done in her life and truly internalize how cruel she consistently is to people. She has to be the best most right person in the room all the time and anyone who challenges that is suddenly public enemy number one, and she is particularly mean and nasty to the people she sees as the most vulnerable because those are the people she can beat down the hardest. Personally I think she used Rachel as her whipping post because how dare such an insignificant person even attempt to critique or parody her. That and the fact that Rachel HAS been holding back and not outspokenly told her off (because she's being the bigger person) means Gabbie feels like she's justified and safe to keep punching down to make herself feel better. It's not any sort of misunderstanding, it's Gabbie being a bully who feels better when she is able to put Rachel down and I am so glad Rachel is finally speaking up because Gabbie is not going to handle this situation like a grown adult. She's going to keep bringing it up till she's blue in the face because she is incapable (at this moment at the very least) of serious constructive self reflection. Hopefully Rachel speaking the very clear truth of the situation is enough to make her shut up about it out of embarrassment. If not embarrassment of her behaviour, then of the public perception that comes from showing her entire ass to the internet over a book review she shouldn't have watched in the first place if her feelings were so fragile.

Jeez I remember all of this. Thankfully, I found Rachel’s channel through this & I’m still subbed! I wish Gabbie would just realize she doesn’t really have a place on KZbin anymore. It’s just all negativity.

Narcissistic people like Gabbie do this. They spin people in circles and hit that one nerve that makes them feel like they’re nuts for being hurt by her. Rachel doesn’t deserve that in the slightest. I’m glad she’s speaking out. Also Gabbi’s poetry and music is godawful. Thank god for reviewers like Rachel that respect the consumer dollar unlike Gabbie who just wants to make money off of this embarrassing religious revival

The part where Rachel’s talking about acknowledging her strengths and intelligence, and how doing that is an encouragement to her audience; that’s exactly what makes me love her as a creator so much. I think she’s so brilliant 🥹 and I admire her for her honesty and openness
