Capitalism and racism I listened to this podcast (thank you) and below are two parallel narratives describing a problem, both worthy of consideration. The first is yours and the second is a plausible option put forward by some who would disagree. This raises the following questions which answers would help resolve these two apparently conflicting stories. What can we learn from history that points to the success or lack thereof of the free market system? What has been the global impact of capitalism other forms of government? Is the problem of disparity between rich and poor best tackled with a racial solution or directly regardless of race ie a class based solution? Is there a third narrative which considers both 1 and 2 above? -- Despite the removal of apartheid laws, why is wealth is so extremely unevenly distributed between white rich and black poor? Narrative 1 This is because of the capitalist system is a trap, which keeps the black people poor by design, and which is maintained by and for the benefit of the wealthy whites minority. The white capitalist mechanisms that keep the black people so poor and oppressed are 1/ requirement for lowest costs which causes (especially) low skilled labour to be severely underpaid 2/ withholding of food, education, health care and housing 3/ racism used as a tool to keep blacks out and wealth in a few white hands. Consequently you can’t separate racism and capitalism. White people generally and especially racist white people are the protective barrier in a capitalist system. Narrative 2 This is primarily because the majority ANC government for 30 years has, with the substantial help of private sector at times 1/ Used their power to enrich themselves through extreme forms of corruption 2/ Placed people in positions based on cadre political affiliation rather than capability. This has lead to gross mismanagement and inefficiency in government, an increase in income disparity and substantial loss of service and support to the poor. This has caused domestic and international loss of confidence in the government leading to paused investment and accelerated emigration of hi skill major tax payers, resulting in a low growth in the economy by international standards. However South Africa is extremely wealthy and quite capable of resolving the wealth differences by through a properly regulated free market system, and providing corrupt and incompetent governance is transformed.
