It seems like a lot of people here only have a shallow understanding of what racism really is. Yes, Redlic didn’t say anything about the skin color, but she said something about Latrice’s ethnic physical attribute, which, for Redlic, is the ONLY reason she won that challenge. Although it’s not blatantly racist, it still doesn’t change the fact that Redlic is insinuating that Latrice didn’t win with talent, and that it was all on her attributes as someone of African descent. Latrice wouldn’t cry like that if she didn’t feel offended. I know racism is still very prominent in Korea, so it isn’t a surprise that someone would think of it that way in that show. I’m sure Redlic didn’t realize it was a racist comment, but hopefully she will learn from this and stop blaming everyone for being better than her 💀

It seems unprofessional for a great dancer like Redlic to use the word "physical" as a way to not accept defeat. Honestly, Latrice's choreo has a lot of groove and flavour. It's definitely not easy (Latrice does it so well that it looks really easy). Yes, some movements may be simple but the overall performance and way of doing every move is NOT simple. In dance, you don't have to hit every beat, you don't have to follow the lyrics of the song, you just need to show what you want to show through the melody of the song - making sure you're in time and finish on the right count. There is no language barrier in dance, and Latrice has said that already. I feel Redlic is too focused on getting the choreo that she missed out on small details that Latrice may have shown which is one of the reasons she lost. But personally I don't think it's embarrassing to lose to such unique choreo and dancing, like that choreo suited Latrice extremely well and she does it the best, so it was really unnecessary of Redlic to make such comments after/during the selection. - Dancer since 3 (does hiphop, ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, ballroom)

Latrice is on a whole other level as a dancer. It's especially apparent at 0:25 and 0:33. Not only is she good at isolating her joints and creating smooth and explosive movements, but she knows how to control her energy to match the song. Redlic just looks like she's struggling to be explosive as possible, spending excessively amount of energy and making the dance pair awkwardly with the song. The way Latrice can't even consider Redlic a rival anymore shows her integrity. A rival is someone who can actively challenge you and push you to better levels. A sore loser has no place as a rival.

I think referencing physical strength when talking about a black woman is a delicate situation. Black women are constantly made out to be more masculine, so I can see why it feels racially coded. It’s complicated because physicality is a term in dance, and talking about someone’s physical abilities is common, and it’s been said about Korean dancers as well. Im not a black woman and I’ll never be in this position. If she’s offended she’s offended. I’m just saying this feels slightly more complicated
@shadowingcat4266 Жыл бұрын
It felt petty of Redlic to say though and pretty racially coded. Latrice didn't win because of her physical appearance, she won because she was so much more groovy and just had more musicality. She looked like she was having fun, whereas with Redlic I could kinda see how she "grit her teeth" which doesn't really go with the music. Redlic definitely should reflect on what she said. It doesn't make her evil of course, but she definitely needs to get out of that mindset.

Latrice Kabamba, an Australian choreographer, dancer and former contestant of Street Dance of China Season 4 faced extreme racism on the Korean show Street Woman Fighter 2 (a rip-off of SDC). After a dance battle between Latrice and a Korean dancer 'Redlic' (Ha Haeun), the latter threw shade at the Australian implying that she had an unfair advantage due to her racial physique and ethnicity: ''To be honest… I felt like this is so unfair… It looked like she didn’t put in the effort… I kept thinking that she won because of her physical build… I bit my tongue and did it because I really wanted it.'' - Redlic [“Street Woman Fighter 2” Contestant] This kind of vile, outright discriminatory behaviour is common place in Korean society and their entertainment industry and should be called out every time. Since the episode aired, racist scenes targeting Latrice have been removed by Mnet.

The translation is talking about body type. I don't know how that has anything to do with her skin color. I have a strong, athletic, curvy body type very similar to Latrice's. If I were on this show, dancing power moves like that, she could have easily made that exact same comment and it still apply despite me having white skin. To me, this translation, is not a direct comment about her skin color. She's saying Latrice is strong and she is which makes doing power moves easier. Many different races can have Latrice's body type, it's not a direct reflection of her skin tone. Also, you're allowed to think whatever you want, but it's very rude for you to call someone illiterate just because their thinking didn't match yours and for simply posing a question.

I dance and I asked a good friend of mine who is a dancer and is also black and she said 'it sounds as though she's mad Latrice's moves are more powerful than hers and instead of just saying that, she's blaming Latrice's stamina and her ability to use her power'. I think people should just be open to the possibility that she's merely commenting on Latrice's strong body type instead of jumping to the conclusion that she means that she's better because she's black. I'd also like to point out that what she said is a very common thing heard said by women speaking about transgender women competing in women's sports. I for sure would not, just like i dont accept Cleopatra to be depicted as something she was not. American colleges literally accept lower scores from certain minorities to get into college compared to others, so Jewish, Indian, Chinese etc need to have higher scores to get in. I dont think this has anything to do with dancing, its obvious she did not get to where she is because of her race, but we should not confuse school grades, movie roles etc with this. Im not sure why we have to expand the situation to something its not, lets just call a racist person racist and that can be that.

@Mas-ij3ti5 ай бұрын
@@sandy_carpetsthesecond5013 Why do people who argue for abortions to be legal always go to the extreme of rape? Its to illustrate the point at its extreme. If i say physical violence is bad and it should never be tolerated as a response to words and my example is someone slapping another person, that example is much less visceral than if i say kill instead of slap. Why do you not apply the same standard for Cleopatra? She was one of the most, if not the most influential person in Egyptian history. That is either dishonest or hypocritical. Fictional or real character does not matter, ofc its worse to race swap a historical person because it distorts history, the meaning and what we should take from that historical "lesson". Would you accept it if we race swapped characters black panther? Ofc you would not like that. The Cleopatra example is incredibly offensive to Egypt and the rest of Africa. Africa has incredibly rich history, why would we make a fake documentary for this narrative rather than make a documentary about some of this rich history? I dont want Black Panther to change their characters race, i dont want Cleopatra to be race swapped, i dont want viking movies to be race swapped and i dont want to watch a movie with a Nelson Mandela that is not black. My logic and argument is consistent, i dont want to erase fictional characters history and especially not real history. It seems like you are okay with doing that if it fits with your beliefs.
@sandy_carpetsthesecond50135 ай бұрын
@@Mas-ij3ti The reason why people use that reason for abortions, is because that's what female reproductive rights attempt to solve. Since womens reproductive rights have been erased, people are being forced to carry their pregnancy in several states in the US, including victims of SA. Race-swapping a character isn't to purposely swap pivotal and culturally relevant people, because I think we can all agree that people who have made that large of an impact on the world should be depicted accurately when character accuracy is relevant to the media you're watching, as it's the respectful thing to do regardless of race. Also, the reason why I wouldn't consider Black Panther's race-swapping to be a good thing, is because of the cultural and racial relevancy to the character. The character just wouldn't work if they were white... And, plottwist: I feel the same way about Snow White. I haven't touched on the Cleopatra argument because I'm not too sure *which* movie you're talking about. I don't watch TV, so I don't bother to keep up with movie releases. But yes, I do agree with that argument. Cleopatra shouldn't be race-swapped. Plus, as a Lingard (Aka, a viking noble family based in England), I personally only care about a vikings race in a movie depending on how relevant they are to the culture. Key figures in my history shouldn't be race-swapped, but I don't agree that the random background viking that's on screen for five seconds needs to be racially accurate, because the background characters aren't depicting real people, they're just stand-ins to reprisent the idea of Vikings. Also, my argument is also consistent: Race-swapping is a valid form of reprisentation for as long as cultural relevancy to/and race are not intrinsic to said character or relevant to real life. So Cleopatra, Nelson Mandela, Black Panther, and Snow White should all be their original race, because race and culture are relevant to the media and real life. Whereas, Ariel, or random background characters depicting vikings, don't need to be racially accurate, because their race isn't intrinsic to the character.

Bruce lee went through the same with teaching his style of Kung Fu. The Chinese refused to teach whites and blacks. Bruce lee argued that and fought for the artform to be shared. Lets not let ignorant people ruin art. Thats just one bad bean in the bag..

@@JmanorG95 lol you know kung fu originated out of Africa ? I get what you’re saying but…. It’s getting out of hand, the same people that use our art form are disrespectful to us. It’s a difference when you learn a way of another country and respect them and acknowledge it’s not yours but pay homage yet it’s different when you have outsiders take your craft and say it’s theirs and disrespect you who created it and allowed others to participate and that’s the issue. We as black people are the MOST disrespected people on the face of the earth… so I have to disagree until respect is given then otherwise we must protect what’s ours… our identity and our language and our culture was taken away from us and we created another in America we can’t have history repeat itself….

0:02 As someone who used to dance a lot ever since they were like a little kid, the lady with the darker skin tone is actually more better ^_^. And not saying this bc of 'feeling bad for her', yes I do feel bad for her but in critiques of her moves, it's actually more fluid and free, it has more definition of emotion and expression. It's a groove where the body is free. While girl on the right (blonde??), is way too agressive, the dance overlapping the art dancing comes along with. Lacking facial expression, and fluidity, only swift and stiff. 0:21 , blonde lady's shoulder also looks stiff too. Choreography/Dancing is supposed to be the art that 'shows' the vibes of the song in body/how music can influence people's bodies in response to music to match the style of the song, not to impress. Blonde lady's dance strays from the song's chill-poppy vibe from how stiff she is

Throwing shade to the black girl while attempting to mimick the black girl's culture! Jealousy is sickening! She will NEVER be able to move like that black girl does!

I gotta ride with you. This is our culture. You can't be mad when someone from the source does it better than you. It doesn't belong to Koreans. They are guests in the culture. They have to accept that

@@happyblackwoman6154 you know how the saying goes: Everybody want to be Black until it's time to be Black. This is the same thing over and over. We are the originators of the culture. Our problem is that we don't gatekeep. That's always been the real issue with it

She can't find any excuse😂 so she is being racist.Girl just except you can't have such graceful hip movements and sharp moves.Rather that moving you lips to offend someone she should have moved her body (her body was stiff while dancing) this is a dance show not a debate show.

Even in competition respect is important...regardless of the race, the criticism just proves the other woman is better.

Thank you for reposting! It pissed me off so much I refused to watch the show after that. The fact that they erased that scene after people started calling her racism out to save her ass enraged me. The fact that also like, no one seemed to acknowledge afterwards?

I'm African born and raised and I cannot dance nor sing. Not all black people know how to dance especially me being an African. That's a pure excuse.

Not all Indians can do their traditional or folk dances so if someone takes them and starts saying that indians can't be good in it than us because they are brown, is it right then?

@@stxfdt1240 Stop being foolish. I took us as an example. Can't understand, then it's your brain's fault. Someday in future, if someone appropriates one of our traditional dance, and it becomes a trend, and even Indians join it but imagine Indians getting hate for doing it just because they are Indians or browns?
