Honestly the only system I can image it being possible to have a character that nothing bad happens to is Psion. That's still not really how the game is supposed to be played but for sensitive children new to TTRPGs you could easily have the deity parent/patreon just be way over involved in that characters life and maybe have the ark being trying to get some independence. Oops, did I say children? I totally meant grown adults that can't handle their actual spouse killing a fictional version of them and acting as though they just witnessed a real suicide... Totally what I meant.

First story: Okay, Anne clearly needs some psychiatric help if she’s passed the age of six and still can’t tell the difference between reality and a pretend game. Sure, OP could have used someone else’s bond to lure the party to the house, but this was Delta Green. Something bad happening to Anne’s character was inevitable. If you can’t handle bad things happening to your character, maybe don’t play games where your character is at risk! Believe it or not, there are RPGs that don’t put PCs in any real danger. Look up Golden Sky Stories. Second story: What. The. Fuck. This guy straight-up said that he plays D&D to “escape” from THE EXISTENCE OF PEOPLE OF COLOR! Most racists at least fucking TRY to be subtle about that shit. This guy is so cartoonishly evil that I’m having a hard time believing this story really happened-or at least, I desperately want it to be fake. Third story: You know what they say, OP-if you look back at something you did and cringe, it means you’ve grown as a person since then. Plus, it was your first time roleplaying. Everyone makes mistakes when it’s their first time. Fourth story: This girl does not know ANYTHING about improv. The cardinal rule of improv is “yes, and.” You take what you’re given and add onto it. You do NOT just flounce around saying no to every hook you’re given! I’ve done improv with people like her before, and it was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. I kept throwing hooks at this guy, but he just stood there and said no until I had to break character and ask him to give me something-anything-to work with. He never did, and our director ended up stopping the exercise there. Point is, this girl needs to take a real improv class and learn some “yes, and.”

Eh, I agree with the argument that, when depicting historical settings or fantasy settings inspired by historical times and places, one should not worry about diversity, inclusivity, etc. but rather immersion and plausibility. There might have been a handful of non-white people in medieval Europe, but probably only in cosmopolitan areas and along trade routes. But in this setting the DM came up with, European-style white people would have looked out of place, so the player's character was actually the offender.

Ugh, I played a character just like the girl in the last story. I was trying to play a more outspoken character to try to break the mold of playing quiet and reserved characters. She was a death cleric who was a princess from a large royal family, so i took the noble background. During the first session, well, it went badly to say the least. My character acted like a total brat, was obnoxious etc. It got to the point that one player tried to "help" my character to death by trying to help get a bunch of rats off of her with his eldrich blast. After that session, I was so ready to ask the other players to go ahead and abandon her sometime next session, because even I was cringing so bad at my gameplay and was rolling up a backup character then and there. But, the next session, I backed off a bit because that last session was just me dominating the session and being a ThatGuy(tm) and I was still embarrassed about it. I was planning on bringing up my plan to get rid of her, but then I wound up having some unexpected badass moments with this character later on that session, and suddenly, I just fell in love with my princess death cleric. Now she's one of my favorite PCs to play, and I can now have her keep her cankerus attitude without stepping on the rest of the players toes/getting in the way and actually being helpful to the point of us players having some of the best player teamwork i have ever seen in all of my ttrpg history. I just had to get past the growing pains of playing a different character than I'm used to and I guess I'm lucky the rest of the table was patient with it. I wouldn't have blamed them one bit if they kicked her over a cliff, or lost her in the woods after that first session.

First story: I agree that OP wasn't in the wrong, as there was no way of knowing how that player would have reacted. But I have to push back slightly on the idea of not choosing her being akin to "playing favorites." It's really not. It's being a considerate GM. As a GM, you have to read the room. You are in 100% control, and if you know a roll of the dice is going to lead to someone having a problem, then you are completely capable of changing it so that everyone has fun. You're not at the mercy of the dice - it's your game. Don't let a dice roll ruin someone's good time. Again, OP was not in the wrong, but I would hope they wouldn't let a dice roll hold them hostage in the future, especially if they knew it'd lead to problems.

I dunno man, if you're playing a game that's based on something like Call of Cthulhu, expecting to never face a harrowing experience for yourself or an innocent bystander related to you during the course of the game is pretty unrealistic. It's like playing old-school D&D and getting upset that your character died, it's just the way the game is designed.

Love the dad joke bards. Gets old, but if you do not make it your only gimik it can work as a running gag. Last story: since they were playing fate, it is not as big of a horror story as in other games. The mechanics let you create aspects as players, so a player can add a tree to the scene or change a past relationship in order to create an advantage or an obstacle. Going back on previous agreed upon fiction is bad, bit the game expects you to talk about these things in play and in the game because players can add narrative aspects to the scene. Anything not decided in the game and in play is not "final" in that game because of how it is played.

I honestly do doubt the validity of Story 2 for just how cartoonish this dude is, but I'll operate under the assumption that it happened. First, if you prefer Euro-centric Arthurian style fantasy, that's fine, so long as your reason for preferring it is aesthetic rather than racism. But as soon as OP mentioned Mesopotamia/Indus region, I naturally thought, "so darker-skinned characters then. Cool." In fact, in a setting like that I'd feel pretty jarred if I saw any white people (assuming this is a medieval/ancient style world with minimal to no colonization and emigration), same with a Japan or China inspired setting. Yeah, in a place that's distictly and heavily pre-Age of Exploration Europe inspired, it'd be odd to see a lot of African or Asian inspired characters but this isn't the case here (it's also hilarious that he chose Game of Thrones as an example when ASOIAF is pretty well known for its diversity of racial backgrounds. That'd be like getting mad about black people in Star Wars...oh wait, that happened). I tend to run more Euro-centric campaigns, but I have ideas for an Ancient Egypt inspired one and a Japanese inspired one. I just need to find people who are down for either of those and finish planning them.

People are scared to "railroad" but when it is an essential part to the story or realistic reaction, that isn't railroading, that is actions have consequences. When she started with the cheating stuff I would have stopped first and asked her what she was doing. Cause if someone had a stormy breakup like she was going with, then they wouldn't have been invited in the first place. In the first story, the OP maybe made a mistake in not communicating to Anne clearly what to expect from a Call of Cthulhu game, given that he knew that Anne liked to play self inserts and tended to get upset when bad things happen to them. In many fantasy RPGs, you can play for years without actually losing a character if your DM plays it soft and the system allows for ressurections in case things go wrong. Not so in call of Cthulhu. This is a horror game, your characters are weak, there are insanity mechanics and the dangers you face are overwhelming. When you create a CoC character, expect this character to be either insane or having died a horrible death by the end of the first session more likely than not. If you are a player who tends to get overly immersed in such games, you should stay clear of such horror games, or at the very least not play a self insert character. Actively playing a character in a horror scenario is much more immersive than just reading a book or watching a movie and thus can be upsetting for people with an active and immersive imagination, even if they know perfectly well on a rational level that it isn't real. Of course, being an adult, Ann is the one mostly to blame, since she said she is OK with playing a horror game when she should have known herself well enough to know better. But the DM could also have seen something like that coming and pushed for her to play a throwaway character with no ties to herself and to people she knows IRL.

Sounds to me from the story that they were just trying to play a more open-ended, narrative type of game, whereas OP had a more linear style in mind. Hell she may have assumed it was supposed to be run like an improv session based on what she said at the end. You know, give them a basic premise and expand on it? I dunno. I think OP was way too harsh on her, but clearly they like to have their sessions a bit more structured, which is fine. But as someone who did have a GM try and force an NDA on their PC once at the risk of "The game stops until you do" even though my PC would rather shoot anyone in the face who dared try to make him, I'll just say I'm against OP on that one. Selfish player behavior at it's finest, read the room if you're the only one having fun then stop and let it go.

Pardon? If you agree to the scenario that “it was a high school relationship. They just drifted apart after graduation”, the idea that most people come up with is that they slowly stopped talking to each other, interests change, and the thought of that person slowly leaves your mind. What she did was the description of a volatile ending where you DON’T do any of the agreed expectation above. You would improv when there is an absent of or a present failing of something in a scene. I wouldn’t call this improvising, I would call it abject rebellion of the agreed on course. Especially since it seemed to went in the exact opposite of the intended path of what was agreed on without any forewarning of the new plan. She seems like she just wanted attention to me.

In the first story, I do lay a bunch of blame at the feet of the GM and Tex. Yes, Anne should do better about seperating game from reality. But they knew this was an issue for her. The GM noticed she was not having a good time with the subject, yet persisted with it. Yes, they did ask if Anne was okay and she brushed it off, but people give in to peer pressure, even unstated pressure, all the time to keep a group happy. She should have spoke up honestly, but didn't. The fact still remains that the OP still decided to target her with the emotionally charged kidnapping, knowing she was uncomfortable in the game and tends to take things too personally. It's not playing favoritism to take into consideration the personality and well being of the players when you are about to do something that's likely to make them uncomfortable. That's just being a good GM and friend. The GM is the one who runs the game, not the dice. So yeah both the GM and Tex were not being very respectful to Anne's emotions in this and both played their part in her blow up. Anne still holds the majority of the blame for overreacting, but they are the ones that triggered it when they should have known better.

Part of me wonders whether Tex did what he did on purpose because he wasn't happy with the way Anne was acting in terms of how far she was taking the self-insertion. I mean, she's his wife and if OP knew of Anne's tendencies in this regard, her husband certainly did. There's no way he didn't know she'd react badly to him mowing down the NPC she'd based on him.

Rings of Power is a bad show, but not because of the minority actors. It completely ruins Galadriel's character, Numenor, and the very timeline.

I think the OP in story might have a just a bit too far, still it's not as bad as the racist, but there is comparison between the two. As for the gal in story 3, yeah, that was selfish. And a bit narcisistic. But hey, we got another Simba mega close up, so there is that.
