Is there a reason the composite n64 video capture look so bad in the video?

Probably a combination of scaling and the prototype cable. The final product will look exactly like a shielded composite cable through the RetroTINK2x...cause that's essentially what this is :) I'll have a follow-up video with much more detailed comparisons before pre-orders open, so you'll know exactly what to expect with the final production version.

I've tested about 40 TV's with the Time Sleuth and none took longer to scale 480p than 720p or 1080p (to 4K)...they were identical. Interlaced vs progressive was the only difference....scaling 480i took around five frames longer! So, you shouldn't have an issue with this cable adding lag.
@matthenzel89305 жыл бұрын
zaneiken It kind of matters. I definitely prefer the 720p output of my AVS over the 480p of the Wii. While I don't need razor sharp pixels, and even prefer the bit of softness that 720p displays, 480p is a bit softer than I prefer. 720p also works rather well when integer multipliers are factored in. Sure it's nitpicking, but that's sort of what we do when we are striving for minimal increases in visual performance.
@buggs99505 жыл бұрын
It's worth pointing out that in europe we almost always have component and RGB over scart inputs on modern TV's. This doesn't mean you don't have to consider lag but it does mean you don't necessarily have to tit about with hdmi converters.

Looks great for the price. But, in all of the examples where the RAD2X was tested, I see black pixels (looks like 2x1 pixels in size) popping up at a random location of the screen, only to disappear a frame or two later. This happened on the SNES, Genesis, SMS, Saturn and N64 and you can clearly see it in the bright areas of the game capture. Since it happened in all the tests, it can't be the console output. This would bother me a lot, despite the otherwise clear picture..

The Playstation cable doesn't support 480p, so not too useful for the Xbox if they build a Xbox version of this cable. Well, UltraHDMI is better in every possible way, except two: You'll actually be able to buy this and you don't have to install it. That's a big deal for some, but if you can mod (and find an UltraHDMI), then absolutely do that instead. No disrespect meant to the RAD2x, it's just a fair opinion.
@emmettturner94525 жыл бұрын
@@RetroRGB A lot of people contact me to ask about UltraHDMI when they hear about the group buy and I'm the first to admit that it isn't worth it for everyone. I like to list alternatives along with typical prices, strengths, and weaknesses to avoid any kind of buyer's remorse. RetroTink 2X and these cables have one more big advantage than the ones you mention: UltraHDMI makes no attempt to de-interlace 480i. It just pipes out that 480i image as 480p or scales the interlaced frame as progressive to 720p/1080p, complete with interlacing artifacts. A digital display will also make no attempt to de-interlace with any of those resolutions, since it's technically a progressive frame of interlacing artifacts by that point. Granted, the N64 is primarily 240p and it's barely noticeable in 480i menus but the combing in a 480i game can be pretty distracting. Not with these!

Emmett Turner sounds like they need to re-make/improve the ultra hdmi mod to do bob-deinterlacing. An hdmi mod that cost $400 for n64 that doesn’t de-interface is kinda stupid. But hey if there isn’t many games that output 480i on it I guess stick with the ultra hdmi mod?

@rodmunch695 жыл бұрын
People complain way too much about the Pound cables. I don't know about the SNES one, but I have one for the Dreamcast and Sega Genesis and I think they look really good. Yes, I have a scart cable solution going to a PVM as well, so I know it can look better, but it doesn't look that much better. The Pound cable for the Genesis in particular looks really good going to my 34" monitor, there's no noticeable lag that I can detect and the picture is quite sharp. If I wasn't sitting 2 ft from the screen, but instead pumping it out to my 55" TV that is 10ft away, I don't think I'd notice any issues. For the Dreamcast the situation is nearly the same just with a slightly softer image. These cables are $30, plug and play, and you're set. I haven't had the issues with a darker than expected picture on the Saturn or Genesis. With that said since I had that much luck I got the XBOX pound cable as well as I got a new TV and the a-holes took out the component video input. For the XBOX, and that one alone, it turned out there was a lot of analog noise in the signal - something I didn't have an issue with on the Dreamcast or Genesis pound cables. So maybe I got a bad one, or maybe those Pound cables work well with the Sega RGB output but not with other systems. I went ahead and returned the XBOX cable. But in any case, if you just want a simple and cheap plug in play solution then just pick up a Pound cable for $30 - at least for the Sega systems.
@RetroRGB5 жыл бұрын
Please stop telling people to buy Pound cables. They're garbage and people who spread misinformation that they're "fine" are WHY these crappy cables get bought. I'm finishing a video that will go live soon that explains all of this. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
@MGSBigBoss775 жыл бұрын
Take it easy man, Pound cables came out when there wasn't any HD upscalers available so Pound cornered the market for making HDMI upscalers. For retro consoles at large. Rod Munch cannot be blamed if Pound are the commercial product which is mostly known out there and is available for purchase more readily can he? If you want RAD2x cables to takeover then it better be a product thats backed by rich investors who'll bank alot of money and support so RAD2x takes Pound technology's spot for retro console HD cables then! Let's just remember that the most technologically sound piece of technology doesn't always win the attention of consumers alright Betamax Vs VHS tape of the 1980's. i.e. Betamax was superior but lost that consumer war. And the later; HD-DVD Vs Blu-ray (many claimed that HD DVD was actually better?) of the early to mid 2000's. and we're using Blu-rays today aren't we. Pound may not technology be the best tech far as the HD cable thing goes? but it is what alot of gamers are currently using however, there's no crime in that is there. Sure i'll go for this Rad2x cable when there's one for the Sega Saturn and European Megadrive/Genesis. But its gotta be made far more available however alright!

@@RetroRGB That is absolutely not my experience with the cables - at least for the Genesis and Dreamcast. Now with the XBOX that was the case. I don't know if it's poor quality control or not - but the Genesis cable, in particular, everything looks and runs fantastic.
@rodmunch695 жыл бұрын
@@MGSBigBoss77 But my point is my experience with the Pound cables is not what he showed. I'm not a complete noob at this and I find them to be completely acceptable for their price - at least 2 of the 3 Pound cables I used this was the case. As said above the XBOX pound cable for me was not good - it had a ton of analog noise in it - but I tried it out since I was impressed with the Genesis cable in particular (and the Dreamcast cable, while a little soft, still looked way better than I had ever seen it since I never had a VGA box). Yes, there are better solutions, but for the money, these cables will make games look better than 99% of the American audience has ever seen, at least on the Genesis and Dreamcast. Almost no one here ever saw the RGB or VGA output on those systems - so if that's where you're coming from they look amazing.

Hopeless to even think about a 8-bit NES compatibility ? Indeed I see no mention of the Nes Multi-Out anywhere on retrocable UK or retroRGB itself. I guess it's because it doesn't output actual RGB signals and the RAD2x tech is based on handling those and not composite signals, correct ? Still great news for my SMS and Snes though, thanks for the video !

One question : this RAD2x or an xrgb framheister ?? One of my friend has a Japanese Saturn. Right now he is playing with composite cables (yuk....). He is playing with a flat screen HD ... Buying a Scart cable is possible but not without modifying the Saturn, internal... Do you get the same picture quality with a RAD2x , compare to a SCART solution + xrgb mini ? Do you also suffer from the long "black screen", with the RAD2X, when the scaler tries to "follow" the changing of resolution of the console ?

Are there any plans for the Nintendo versions to include S-video? Seems like a big improvement that they chose to miss out on. The only thing that couldn't benefit from S-Video would be an unmodded SNES Jr., but everything else would be drastically better. S-video would be particularly huge for people with a stock N64 or DOL-101 GameCube, as there are no plug and play low-cost solutions for either of those right now.

Hm, the 480i captures do not look that good. I am aware of the problems with interlacing and there is probably no perfect solution. But I think in interlaced modes it would actually make sense to collect both fields and output them as one 480p image. Even though this would result in lag.
@RetroRGB5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but that would make the cable more expensive. I agree though, I hate how 480i looks on a flat-screen. It's only an issue with PS2 though, as most other consoles will be primarily 240p.

Will I be able to use a RAD2X to output 480p RGB from a Japanese Master System (MK-2000)?? I reached out to RGC several days ago and haven't gotten a response yet. You mentioned that these cable work with consoles around the world but I wanted to double check. Thank you for your contributions to the retro gaming community. Happy New Year!
@RetroRGB4 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, as the MK-2000 has a completely different output circuit than all other Master System consoles. It won't hurt to try though, as the signal (voltage) might be too weak, not too strong.

RetroRGB I appreciate the response, brother. I agree I figured the different output may be a hinderance. So these cables are basically cable-ized RetroTink2X's. That's damn cool. @retroRGB: would you happen to have a BlackMagic Design Intensity Pro 4k in a system you run/own? I have to run two separate capture cards for my consoles (one for modern direct HDMI (PS3/PS4/Nintendo Switch) i.e. the PCI-E-based IP4k I mentioned and one for my old consoles (PS1/PS2/SFC) i.e. a USB 3.0-based Razer Ripsaw via a RetroTink2x and some HDRetroVision components cables through a component switcher box for each of the older systems mentioned. I know the RetroTink2x outputs through miniHDMI, but for some reason my IP4k cannot receive any sort of usable signal from the RetroTink's output. I get a wicked V-Hold effect (sync issues I'm guessing... I think it's just under 60 Hz), making any footage / capture useless. If you'd like some footage of that to see what I mean I can take some. The Razer Ripsaw on the other hand receives the RetroTink2x's signal super nicely and the captured footage looks awesome. So with all that said do you have the aforementioned BMD IP4k PCI-E capture card to test with an SFC and one of these new Nintendo MultiOut RAD2x cables coming out? Even a prototype would work for a test. If they don't produce the V-Hold effect I might get rid of the Razer Ripsaw and go all straight IP4k for all my consoles, which is what I'd prefer to do. Thanks, and I hope I made sense.

Both will have zero latency and are excellent solutions. Keep in mind that Dreamcast is best played in 480p though, so you might want a solution that can handle the signal from all those consoles like the OSSC, or the new device Mike keeps teasing...
