Great video. When I was learning to drive, I thought I accidentally ran through a red light that had these cameras. I was certain I got a ticket. But, I put two and two together and I realized that you can't have a red light camera that just captures a car's front license plate. Drivers from states that don't require front license plates would get off scot-free. Also, at least in NY, local governments are legally required to put out signs at the intersections that are actually camera enforced.

@@glennquagmire1747 yep. And how do you think that box communicates with those traffic signals. That box controls a strobe light that sends a coded signal in that highly visible light system to the optical receivers on the signal light poles that tell that intersection's traffic signal system that an emergency vehicle is approaching. They use the strobes because they are highly visible, and highly directional. It is a much easier way to tell that the emergency vehicle is approaching the intersection and from what direction, and even in some cases which lane such as a turn lane as opposed to a through traffic lane, it is approaching.

The emergency vehicle preemption sensors aren't cameras, though they look like it. They're broad near-IR detectors which look for a coded pulse from a transmitter on the vehicle. There may be different codes, for example a lower-priority bus code that is overridden by an emergency vehicle. While the cameras you mention aren't used to write red light tickets, they should still be getting recorded. They could be set to keep recordings for 30 days, then start overwriting the oldest files. The recording could then be used to verify the system is giving green lights the way it should and, if a wreck should occur, could show who ran the red light. Also, I think many cities have them displayed in the traffic management office to let them keep an eye on how traffic is flowing.

Honestly, these cameras and radars that are detecting traffic in intersections, need to be updated so that when traffic isn't detected, lights can be changed automatically to free traffic on other sides. Therefore, instead of sitting at a traffic signal with no traffic coming from the opposite direction, cars are able to go through faster and thus keeping the flow of traffic a lot smoother. It also brings the US standards closer to that of the Netherlands, of which outranks the US on traffic flow.

A few years back I put in a request for footage from an intersection that I saw these cameras at cause I needed it for fighting a wrongful judgement in a collision- I thought they were traffic cams like state DOT has along highways. Turns out they're not, they (supposedly, since I have no way to confirm for sure!) don't record anything. I always wondered what they were for, if not for recording traffic. This has been great for learning that! I knew it wasn't for speed since the ticketing camera systems are WAY larger, but I wouldn't have guessed it was for triggering lights - I thought that was all only done exclusively with timed systems or under-road sensors. Figured the cameras for were emergency vehicles in some capacity - I know the little camera-like sensors mounted directly next to the traffic lights pick up the flashing emergency beacons to signal the intersection to go red for safe passage. I'd have never expected radar to be used, either!

Red light and speed cameras are generally set up so that you don't see them. I saw a new massive tower of them a couple of weeks ago, and they are right there on the island..............AS YOU ARE LOOKING at the light, the intersection, the traffic, and everything BUT right there where that camera is. A particular speed camera comes to mind: It's set just slightly around a turn, and just far enough past a red light intersection so that you are definitely picking up the pace, and as you approach the camera, you're already seeing the lights at the next intersection. They are not randomly placed. We're only a few years away where all those wonderful new cars you love pumping fuel into will be reporting your driving to the police and insurance companies on demand.

@manny7886 Жыл бұрын
It's just a loop wire buried 2 to 3 inches under the ground. The wire is connected to an electronic device called loop detector. The loop is either a round or rectangle shape visible on the ground. This loop detector can be used to turn on a device like a camera, measure the speed of a moving vehicle (hence they know how fast you are going on the freeway, it's also the reason why sometimes you would see an estimated travel time from point A to point B), the direction of the vehicle, or anything the designer want it to be.

It normally last maybe 30 seconds sometimes a min. Then it stops and goes back to normal detecting. I don’t think they are using them in the US yet but overseas they are starting to use cameras with license plate recognition systems in a manner that’s totally undefeatable by radar detectors or traditional loop detection/stationary speed cameras - the presence of which can be alerted to drivers using a mapping application. The concept is very simple… they set up camera 1 at say mile marker 10 of a highway and camera 2 at mile 20. A computer records all of the license plate numbers which pass by camera 1 then a computer records all of the license plates passing by camera 2. The computer then does a very simple average speed calculation between point 1 and point 2 for every license plate that passed by both cameras and issues a ticket if the average speed is over the posted speed limit in that stretch of highway.

So let's say the main road stays green, while the side street light will only signal red to the main if a car shows up and then turns green to let side traffic through. However, if the main goes back to green and another car shows up on the side, say within 10 seconds, the side light will go green and turn the main street red immediately if a car shows up on the side, no matter HOW LONG the main light has been green. Shouldn't the main street light have a minimum green time?
