UPDATE! The newer version (v. 2.4.): 1: Radeon Prorender is now a simple ZIP installer so make sure you use that method instead of the internal installer shown here. 2: They also have a new experimental rendering option that is very very fast but appears to only use your discrete GPU. It also leaves tons of artifacting. 3: The background HDRI issue appears to have been resolved. 4: When using the Materials Library, the RPR image map doesn't appear to work when viewing through the non-FULL views- switch the RPR Image Texture node with the internal BLENDER image texture node to resolve. 5: Rendering animations will sometimes cause computer hard shutdowns- currently being resolved by developers. I will be posting a video soon on my findings using a python script inside the console window within blender. This video is using the following build you can download here: www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-prorender-blender-v2-3-blender-2-80-2-81-2-82

I also have a series on my channel going over component specifics like cooling, GPUs, power supplies etc. I would definitely hold off on buying a GPU until after AMD’s launch next week and until Nvidia actually delivers more 3000 series cards. If you are wanting to get one of the new release GPUs, wait for reviews/benchmarks for workstation use not gaming.

@@djtutorialscgi absolutely my plan. If anything, I heard the 2060 ko was a good chip for editing, specifically as it had a 2080 chip under the hood (but was waiting to see if the new 3000 series would impact pricing). I'm waiting for the new releases for both CPU & GPU - I'll check out your component guides right away!
@djtutorialscgi3 жыл бұрын
I understand it’s a gamble on whether or not you get a binned 2080 wafer but by all means go for it. The KO is a good GPU from what I heard. I would definitely say to stick to 8GB VRAM if you plan on rendering 2K-4K (downsample to 1080P) images or animations. Don’t expect to be able to render ray traced 4K easily though unless you bump it up to 10-16GB VRAM.

I've been reading these comments and it seems you are very active in helping other users! I'm very grateful that someone as experienced as you actively contribute and assist others in this field :) If it isn't too bothersome, I hope you can help me with my issue too. When I use RPR, the renders are noticeably faster than cycles, but the rendered objects appear different than when rendered in cycles. For example, on cycles, the sprinkles on my donut are of 4 different colors, but on RPR it's just 2 colors. Also, when I'm rendering an image with RPR, it renders fine until the last stage, where I can see the image, but when the render's complete, the image suddenly turns completely white. I'm really impressed with RPR, but a bit dismayed that it's limited with these issues. If you don't mind, I hope you can give me some suggestions:) I posted the same questions above in community.amd.com, with the blender file attached: community.amd.com/thread/254972 community.amd.com/thread/254971 If you need a more recent blender file let me know how to send it to you, I'd be very glad to do so! @@djtutorialscgi I've shared the file through google drive! Thank you so so much for the compositing feedback! Although the sprinkle colors are still off, the image can actually render after fixing the compositing nodes. Like you said, I think the nodes in shading may have something to do with the issue, as I'm using color ramps, texture coordinates and object input nodes for the randomized sprinkle colors, so that may be why it's a bit different on rpr.

@@blendtonic received- will make a quick (ish) video for you with some help.
@linkzerotsang4 жыл бұрын
25:40 Actually both Cycles and RPR have progressive refinement / tiled rendering options. Usually in the same engine, properly set tiled rendering is faster than progressive rendering and costs less memory. The good side of the progressive rendering is that you can stop before it hits the final sample number and in some urgent case this might help, and do resumable rendering in applicable engines (unfortunately neither Cycles nor RPR supports this feature yet).
@djtutorialscgi4 жыл бұрын
That's true but it takes a very long time in Cycles compared to Luxcore and Prorender for progressive refine and tiled rendering in RPR is not as fast as the progressive refine.

Hi Vjeko! Does your computer have a discrete GPU? If not, I believe that would be the reason. If you do have a discrete GPU, it might not be supported. Since you are using MAC OS, you would probably be using a laptop or iMAC which (I am fairly certain) do not have dedicated GPUs. MAC Pro and iMac pros do. The "Full Spectrum" raster engine inside RPR uses the Vulkan architecture and I am quite positive that it requires a dedicated GPU to work. You can tell by going to the render device options once you have turned on the RPR engine. If you only see a CPU and no other render devices, that most likely is the reason.

The best thing to do is just download it, install it and try it out. You can easily remove it via blender interface if it doesn’t work out for you or remove it using the app data removal process I show in my video. ProRender, along with LuxCore and Cycles, I give a lot of leeway as they are %100 free whereas most other engine plug ins have extremely high price tags. It is worth a shot for some of the things it does well. I tend to use Eevee, LuxCore, ProRender and Cycles interchangeably depending on the project as each has its own unique benefits. ProRender is a non-bias engine and you should be able to if not now, eventually use both Nvidia and AMD GPUs in tandem as their previous versions did. They are in the middle of shifting to a newer 2.0 renderer that has a lot of potential but it’s a work in progress and there is a lot still to do.

I would recommend doing specific searches for the card you want to buy. I have heard conflicting information on certain AMD cards simply not working. The AMD Radeon VIIs I use work great but I have heard that others don’t. I have been reading forums as well that say that AMD’s GCN cards work fine but newer RDNA cards are full of issues and people have switched to Linux from Windows to skirt around the problems. Really do your research here. If you want to go with a sure thing, get an Nvidia GPU. If you are willing to deal with some issues for potential savings and possible faster results, go with AMD.

Look for Manuel Bastioni Lab for Blender 2.8 and/or 2.9. It’s out there somewhere but you’ll have to do a little digging perhaps to find it. It’s an auto-generator for character meshes.

I have a new crash course series on my channel if you're interested. An FYI- on the development boards, the support for Mac is... spotty at best so expect some delays in repairing and dealing with Mac related issues.

Can I use this on Mac OS + Blender?

Yes. They have a plug in for MacOS but keep in mind it is less stable and there have been reports of some issues with METAL.

@@djtutorialscgi Umm... Is that a Macbook issue, or more like an MacOS issue?
@djtutorialscgi4 жыл бұрын
Metal is their GPU api (like OpenGL for Nvidia and OpenCL for AMD). If your computer uses a discrete GPU (likely not on a MacBook unless you are using an eGPU setup) then the api it will use is Metal. Some FYI of what I understand- Apple tends to be harder to code for and lower on the list for developers since most VFX work is done using Linux and Windows operating systems along with the fact that Apple tends to keep a lot of things proprietary. In general, from what I have gathered, using development builds on Apple is usually less stable but I could be wrong. Either way, go to the Radeon Prorender for blender site, download and install the addon and check it out for yourself! Please let me know how it goes.

@@djtutorialscgi Thank you very much for such a detailed answer! :) I saw their Macbook 16 have a dedicated GPU (Radeon Pro 5300 M, equivalent to GTX 1650). It's very tempting, but not sure it will work with Blender or not :( Thank you anyway!

@@alzearafat ... Don't buy MAC is my suggestion.... You will get more for your $ buying a PC product and longer lifespan (usually) but that's just my preference. I go over it in more detail here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqi5nJ95r818b5I

check the release notes on the prorender download page and make sure that you have a supported GPU. If you have a supported GPU, restart your computer and try again. It should clear it up.

Wow, this thing is as bad as Luxcore. Though with more bugs. The scene is grey, change engines then come back it is no longer grey but crashes. Render does not render but sometimes does. When it is slower than cycles something is off. Looks like it would be a great renderer but it needs a lot of polish this is alpha at best.
@djtutorialscgi4 жыл бұрын
I agree that ProRender needs work, but can you clarify “as bad as Luxcore”? Luxcore, in my experience, is a fantastic engine. Also, what is your hardware and what are your settings etc.? It sounds like there is some kind of hardware issue.
@Grimeaper4 жыл бұрын
@@djtutorialscgi I should have said as slow. Luxcore is at least mostly stable. My hardware. AMD Ryzen 9 3950x 16 core 64gbs of ram, GTX 1660 Ti 6gbs, Windows 10. This one ( mundi_umdali.artstation.com/projects/ELYxEK ) is nearly impossible to render in Luxcore properly (takes a couple hours), noisy, some things are too blurry. Cycles (an hour or so) takes almost as long and almost the same results. Pro Render doesn't want to bother to render it as in it things stop time etc acts as if it is done for like 30 minutes and it has rendered nothing. I can exit it as if it is done as in no struggles. In viewport render it shows nothing but grey, until I switched it to another engine and back, then when I switch to viewport render it crashed. All the above are at default and 1080x1080. Eevee takes about 5 minutes and renders at 2080x2080 most of the time with no slow down sometimes it freezes my entire computer. Its limit is around 3080x3080 any higher and it will slow my computer down no matter what. Cycles, etc also has the potential to freeze my entire computer as well. Not sure what is going on with that. Again reaching my computer's limit or some other limit.

@@Grimeaper Part of the problem is the Volumetric rays (I am assuming you are rendering that out in the final). If using Cycles, CPU tends to render faster than GPU for Volumetrics. Your GPU (since it has 6GB VRAM) will run into a wall when rendering above 1920x1080 so keep that in mind. Luxcore is extrtemely slow and noisy at Volumetrics. Check out my comparison video concerning Volumetrics here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ml6tZYRnqpino9k For ProRender, there could be any number of things going wrong but remember that the engine does not use the same nodes as Cycles/Eevee so you will need to translate/convert your file over to ProRender using a series of steps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKetp559jbpmhsU I don't know your particular workflow so here is a suggestion and something I often do for the same effect: I would recommend NOT rendering Volumetric rays in a raytracing engine. Instead, try using the Sunrays comp node after you render to create a ray like effect OR render out the Volumetric rays as a separate asset using Eevee and compositing the two together.
