It's interesting watching this right after going through Blender Guru's tutorial series. Very different school of thought in how to approach modeling, he didn't cover the difference between destructive and non-destructive modeling (at least I don't think he did... If he did, I don't think he used those terms or explained different situations where you would want to prioritize destructive vs non-destructive modeling.) Originally I was just looking to see if anyone had made a project file I could tinker with, but I didn't expect to find a tutorial on modeling based around Twin Peaks. Doing large professional level sims simply take a long time. If you want more instant results, I know Embergen is in BETA right now with some sim software.

The annoying thing about scattering is that it only affects light. It doesn't scatter the shape of the objects or a texture. In reality, looking trough a milky plastic (LED diffuser for example) would make a text right behind it still readable but the the further away the text is placed, it gets more and more blurry as the light coming from the text page is scattered inside the material. (even if it's completely glossy on the surface.) I'm not able to create such a material in Cycles or Luxcore. Do you have an idea if it's possible to simulate such a thin sheet of "milky" plastic? If yes, how?
@cr4723
@cr4723 3 ай бұрын
You're confusing something. You can get the text you want to see with Translucency or Transparency with Roughness (LED diffuser = Frostglass). This tutorial is about subsurface scattering, which is what you see with wax, milk, plastic or skin. The light spreads inside the material. You can't see text through a glass of milk.
@SteveThinman
@SteveThinman 3 ай бұрын
@@cr4723 It depends on the thickness of the glass... In my work, I'm using plastics (DF93 or Evonic 0O200) which are light scattering materials. They are completely glossy on the surface (unlike surface textured transparent materials, like plexiglass with a VDI3400 texture). I have a real sample with 3 different thickness areas 1,2 and 3 mm. These are volumetric scattering materials to diffuse light but at the same time have a high gloss factor on the surface. (Some of them, like DF45 even have paint particles mixed into them). Depending on the thickness and on the distance to the printed paper with text, you can clearly read the text behind it which is good because that helps to determine the amount of scattering. I have to revise myself though, as one reader has contacted me and showed me how to do such a material in Luxcore. It works (kind of) but it's hard to control and not very straightforward to set up.
@cr4723
@cr4723 3 ай бұрын
@@SteveThinman It has nothing to do with glossyness. You need a glossyness / reflection on the surface, this works (similar to glass). And then you need roughness in the transparency. These are 2 different parameters. But in Luxcore you can made a milky plexiglass with the "Glossy Translucent Node" into the Material Input and a "Homogeneous Volume Node" into the Interior Volume Input. In "Glossy Translucent Node" the Diffuse Color must be black, Transmission color white! Then you play in the "Homogeneous Volume Node" with the Absorbtion and Scattering Scale. That works, because that annoys me, because I don't want to see the background through. :) You can test it on the monkeys ear, it is thin enough. Good luck!

@DeBeau it may be dated but generally speaking with LuxCore, you need to get the development builds or use a version of Blender that is compatible. LuxCore has a small dev group and they try and keep up with Blender, but often addon devs are behind the newest versions of the base applications.
@DeBeau

@@djtutorialscgi I know indie developers have quite a task keeping up with bigger and more established teams. And I'll happily use an older version of Blender if that means I'll be able to make use of the add-on. I'm just glad to know I'll still be able to use it. In fact, if not for tutorials like this one, showing what can be achieved with a bit of perseverance, lazy guys like myself would have a hard time maintaining our motivation. So...
