I'm incorrect. If you are CPU bottlenecked then it will give the same fps because your CPU cannot send enough frames to the GPU for rendering to begin with. You see what I mean? If the GPU cannot render the frames fast enough then the CPU will quickly finish its work and wait idle. Same goes vice versa. If CPU cannot keep pace with GPU then GPU will render whatever workload it has been given and then sit idle until more work is given. That's why when testing GPUs, reviewers do not use weak CPUs, or even mid range CPUs. Because if your CPU can only give 40 frames to the GPU for rendering, the GPU will just sit idle after finishing 40 frames. Meaning both Nvidia and AMD cards will give 40 frames.

Especially if the calculations are interdependent its difficult to multithread. And high CPU load just cripples Nvidia at the moment. All the games it does particularly poorly in, in this test are all high CPU load games. (open world, lots of calculations, physics, geometry, AI etc).

@@K5Legion Not only that, I dont think without completely revising their driver, and adding scheduling hardware on their architecture, that they will be able to make many gains through software alone. I think in the short term, Nvidia's performance in rasterization will be incredibly lacklustre in modern games built from the ground-up with next-gen ryzen consoles in mind (more CPU usage), which is why they're pushing their meme AI and RT. It's the only thing they can do with what they have...

*RTX4070 user... my 2 cents* When I bought my RTX4070, the AMD comparison was the RX-6800XT. The POWER DRAW under gaming was 300W vs 200W for the RTX4070 (my room gets WARM so power draw matters a lot). The price in Canada was also slightly HIGHER. Aside from VRAM the AMD card didn't offer much. Ray-tracing to me isn't a deal-breaker but it matters. If I was comparing an RTX4070 now with an RX-7800XT I'd need to think much harder about it if the RX-7800XT was cheaper. Power draw 250W (vs 200W). Not really a factor... FSR3? Too bad I can't compare so that's a tough one. CUDA? Matters but not a deal breaker. Price? Not a big deal to me but not a deal-breaker. VRAM? Ya, I really wanted 16GB but I couldn't justify an RTX4080 as I'd also have to rebuild my PC (R9-3900x CPU currently) due to a big CPU bottleneck... long story short I'd probably still go with the RTX4070 but mainly for DLSS and CUDA (Topaz video editing)... AMD will have a tough time getting me back though. I'm willing to pay EXTRA for better to a point. I get super distracted by things like SHIMMERING etc so visual QUALITY to me is probably the most important part.... Although, I probably will keep the RTX4070 for a long, long time now. I have a lot of games and I seem to be replaying OLDER GAMES just at higher resolutions. Currently playing Mass Effect Legendary trilogy (modded) and Skyrim AE (modded). I have FPS drops in Spider-Man Remastered but I wouldn't build a new PC for that. I'd really need SEVERAL games that just blow me away for me to justify building a new PC. I've got so much time and so much money after all.

Great review, really interesting stats. I think one missing point here is that upscaling using DLSS usually outclasses FSR in every way possible, in every game that have both implementations. For example, FSR at Quality very often looks WORSE than DLSS using Performance. Not to mention having additional Nvidia features like Frame Gen, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA. As mentioned frequently by people like Digital Foundry, the image quality of the upscaler really needs to be a factor in comparisons because sharing raw benchmark numbers doesn't paint a full picture for consumers. While image quality comparisons would obviously introduce more subjectivity, I think at this point it's an essential piece of the puzzle.

You’re mistaken here. FSR 3 doesn’t have, or use, any improvements to the upscaling already present in FSR 2. It adds a Frame Generation feature that interpolates and generates new frames to increase the frame rate, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS 3.0 Frame Gen. It does not improve image quality in the slightest (and just like Nvidia Frame Gen, arguably reduces image quality)

@danieloberhofer9035 Жыл бұрын
Performance-wise, I'd consider the matchup a tie with a little advantage for AMD. Both CP2077 (with RT) and Starfield are basically meaningless for an overall comparison, as they're both heavily influenced by Nvidia and AMD, respectively. There's nothing to be learned there except that if you prefer Starfield, you buy AMD, and if you prefer CP2077 (with RT on!), you buy Nvidia - period. In the end it'll come down to two things: First, if pricing in your region favors Nvidia, you'll probably consider the 4070. If not, the 7800XT is the obvious choice. And second: Your personal upgrade cycle. If you switch GPUs every generation, the 4070 has the superior feature set and thus is a very compelling option. If instead you upgrade your GPU every 3-5 years (or even less often), the 7800XT is immeasurably better. Having 16GB instead of 12GB makes such a huge difference in terms of longevity I'd not even remotely consider the 4070 for a long term build. Moreover, AMD's track record of supporting older GPUs and improving both drivers and features is way better than Nvidia's. If you compare the last decade of GPUs (let's say back to Maxwell), with a few exceptions every AMD card aged better than its Nvidia counterpart. So for long term builders I'd go with the 7800XT, even if its price matches the 4070's.
@gamesmaster1060 Жыл бұрын
I'm not even sure about the 4070s advantages as the 4070 dips below 60 a lot on DLSS Cyberpunk on overdrive RT path tracing (which is the only RT mode I care about). So I think I'd rather just have the extra performance of the 7800xt without RT or mabye low RT. Ray tracing is something I think I can wait for until it becomes cheaper to run. I think if you are buying a GPU for ray tracing you should get a 4080 or 4090. 4070 feels like a bit of a half measure and the demands of cyberpunk will apparently go up with the dlc/update

Maximum 314w power draw on all 7800xt. Maximum of 250w power draw with vbios flash on any dual vbios 4070. Neither of these are particularly impressive. Now that Nvidia bios modding has been unlocked, a potential 400w+ 4070 vbios is theoretically possible but likely won't benefit the 4070 as much as it would RDNA3 gpus. Basically both of these cards have been locked down to prevent them from achieving performance of the next tier above.

From what I can tell most of the mid & upper range cards on the AMD end are pretty good for OC gains, you just need to fiddle with it a bit because it isn't immediately intuitive if you come from the NVidia side or haven't done any OC before. I wouldn't spend the money on buying additional waterblock stuff for your GPU tho unless you already watercool your entire system, the gains from watercooling aren't worth the price you'd be spending versus just buying a better card imo. Watercooling, like you said, is worth it on the 7900xtx & 4090 because there's nothing faster than either of them in their respective product stacks (and the 7900xtx is aggressively priced so it makes more sense to watercool it than to buy a 4090 instead).

Nice video. One suggestion though (not sure if suggested before), but after 8:40, on the comparison charts, the top right description I would change to e.g. "Higher is better for RX 7800 XT", or "Negative: Nvidia is better; Positive: AMD is better". Just "Higher is better" doesn't seem to make much sense on such a comparison chart, IMO. Also thanks for mentioning the price difference outside US 👍.
@henrikw377 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comparison. Huge missed opportunity IMO not to include at least some undervolting/overclocking results. The 4070 can't really be pushed higher performance-wise but can achieve great efficiency gains (as was mentioned), but according to some reviews there's a potential 10+% performance uplift potential in the RX7800 XT with little cost (slightly increased power consumption). If performance is all that matters, that tilts the decision even further towards the 7800 XT.

imo its a lot more interesting to see undervolting results if you can reduce power consumption without too much of a hit to performance
@mojojojo6292 Жыл бұрын
You can 10% out of the 4070 as well combined with an undervolt it still uses around stock 190w average or with just the undervolt you can have very near stock performance at 140w.

Great video as always. I’m getting the 7800 XT, happy Christmas to me. My son has the 4070 and he loves it, he mainly plays Fortnite DX 12 at 1440p. My daughter has the 3070 and that’s still a great card!

That's great to hear, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. At first, I was leaning towards the 7800 xt because of its great performance and cost, but then I realised the RTX 4070 is better for Fortnite which I mainly play, so i went with that. Merry Christmas!

Just picked up a RX 6800XT Nitro+ for $380. I would stick with the 6000 series. They also support FP16 half Floats which doubles FP32 compute. The 3000 and 4000 series from nPIGIA does not. it does help in some games. FP16 helps in games like Mass Effect: Andromeda and Far Cry 4,5 and 6 for example.

I went with the 4070 due to the power efficiency/thermals. I'd honestly have just kept my 1080ti longer, but recently, lots of games are having issues with anything that isn't a current/last gen card (DLSS?). Just due to the absence of optimization really. I absolutely do not mind potato settings for 60+fps, but even that won't work in a lot of games right now, especially AAA. Not sure I'll even want to stick around by the next upgrade cycle in a bunch of years. I shudder even thinking about what things will look like by then.
@fabijanraic1034 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you that the games today are getting less and less optimized so we have to throw more computing power at them to get (visual) experiences that are not really much better than 5ish years ago. Graphics shouldn't be the most important thing anyway. they should focus more on game-play.

companies tend to nerf drivers for old cards to make you buy new ones. nvidia has been caught a few times doing it but amd does it as well
@WilliamStewart1 Жыл бұрын
There's less than a 50w difference between the two during use, not worth mentioning imo. From what I'm seeing with thermals, they're actually both quite comparable during use as well. A tuf 7800xt idles at 38, and peaks at 75, a 3x tuf 4070 idles at 36, and peaks at 74. The reference 4070 idles at 39 and peaks at 83.

It's crazy how irrational the world can be! People continue to buy products that are purposely designed to become outdated, just because they have the brand name "Nvidia" on them. But when it comes to factors like thermal performance and energy efficiency, the new AMD cards actually excel. If you stick with Nvidia, you'll end up spending more money because in two years you'll have to buy a new video card. And the current one might not even have enough VRAM! It's unbelievable how illogical the world can be.

I've been leaning AMD recently due to VRAM and value issues. I was thinking of saving up for a 7900 XT a few months from now but with the 7800 XT delivering the performance I want at $500 US and being bundled with Starfield which I also wanted and without knowing how long that bundle will continue, the value of the 7800 XT was just too good to pass up. I got the PowerColor Hellhound for MSRP, a model that is $520 most places but for at least the first day or two, Micro Center was providing a $20 discount on that model and I took advantage of that too. Starfield redemption was a bit problematic as Micro Center didn't have the bundle set up right in their system at time of 7800 XT launch, and I had to go through Micro Center support to get the code, but I think they've got that sorted now.

Great summary and overview of both cards! I'm wondering if the lower stock of the 7800 XT is both a marketing and PR ploy by limiting launch availability of the 7800 XT compared to the 7700 XT at only $50 less. They get the PR of a sold out of the higher tier card on launch day, better performance to their price-comparable alternative from Nvidia, while also providing a 'reasonable' alternative with the more plentiful 7700XT. That being said, at $50-100 more for a 4070, this is entirely on Nvidia with their mid-tier pricing.

A big thumbs up for mentioning prices outside US. In India the 7800 xt is just 30 US dollars cheaper than 4070. In indian rupees it has to go to 45-46k range to make sense instead of the 53k that it costs right now.

On the multigame comparisons, it would be useful to have the bars colored by whether or not that game was playable. Maybe any game where both were under 30 fps are red, under 60 fps yellow? And really if both cards are under 30 fps, I’m not sure it’s worth including that result in the average seeing as most people aren’t going to actually play with those settings. Call it the playable average or 30+ / 60+ average.

Its still a great deal with Starfield and 4gb more ram and FSR 3.0 on its way and the 16gb of ram I think will be vital when it comes to Unreal Engine 5 games going forward. Im also glad Nvidia responded by lowering their prices as this is what competition is.

Rasterization- 7800 XT ~ 0% to 20% lead on average depending on the game. Ray Tracing- 4070 ~ 10% to 30% lead on average with a couple of outliers that tie with nVidia or even favor AMD in lighter RT workloads. Path Tracing - 4070 ~ 50% to 100% faster. The 7800 XT is the better gaming GPU for the money (in the U.S.), especially if RT is not important to you. I can see the Ryzen 7800x 3D and 7800 XT being a really popular pairing for many gamers. The 4070 is the better "jack of all trades" GPU since rasterization is close enough to a 7800 XT in many games while being ahead in RT/PT and being a much better content creation GPU (video editing, 3D modeling, AI generation) Side note: Blue Lu3iz loves BBC and practically scarfs it down.
@03chrisv Жыл бұрын
@garrusvakarian8709 I did. In games with light RT workloads the 7800 XT isn't bad, it even ties or beats nVidia in some games, I even mentioned this in my original comment. Were you so triggered that you just tossed that out of your mind? Also different reviewers show slightly different results more in favor for nVidia in RT.
@03chrisv Жыл бұрын
@blue-lu3iz Cherry picking data on a handful of games under light RT workloads does not refute my claim. You clearly didn't read my whole comment where I said there are exceptions. There are other more thorough reviews out there that show a more complete picture. Its also interesting how you don't mention path tracing where you know the 4070 utterly dominates.
@03chrisv Жыл бұрын
@blue-lu3iz Yeah 13 games out of over a 100 that feature RT, most of the 13 games here only feature RT shadows or low resolution reflections like RE4 Remake. The kind of RT used matters. Context matters. In light RT workloads the 7800 XT does well against a 4070, but the heavier the RT the wider the gap as seen in some games like Cyberpunk or Rachet and Clank. My 4070 plays both Cyberpunk RT Overdrive and Portal RTX at 4k 60. Granted I need DLSS but the end results are what matters so I wouldn't say the 4070 is useless in path tracing, in fact I'm pretty sure the 4070 even outperforms a 7900 XTX in path tracing.
