I will show you how to replace a brake cable on mechanical disc brakes using my Rad Expand 5 as an example.
My cable was frayed, so I thought I would make a video of me replacing it!
This is the same install for the Lectric XP 2.0 and just about any bike with mechanical (cable-pulled) disc brakes.

Have a Roadrunner and plan to change the rear brake cable, my worry is that after I take the old cable out, will the new one slide in easily and come out the other end because it routes partly inside the bike and takes a few twists and turns.

At 3:49, I think it's better to *leave the barrel adjuster a few turns out* rather than screwing it all the way in. I had a cable snap at the caliper once, and because I had some slack in the line, I was able to loosen the adjuster, pull the cable through to compensate, and keep riding until I could get a new one.

Ok I have 2 problems. Number 1, the cables I bought, the little bullet head is smaller. Does that make a difference ? Number 2. Even if I put the original cable back in. The bullet head, turns itself sideways. Does that make a difference ? I dont know what to do ?

I know you wouldn't normally cut a cable before pushing it through its housing, but lets say somehow you did... How can you prep the end such that it doesn't fray, but the end stays nice and skinny so it can be pushed through easily? In other words, how can you do what they do at the factory? I've found that when I solder a cut cable, the soldered end will usually no longer fit through a housing. (In case it's not obvious, I'm not a bike guy, but I'm using the cables for other projects.)
@PedalWithPower
@PedalWithPower Жыл бұрын
You can cut the cable and still run it through housing. I do it all the time
@charliehorse8686

@@PedalWithPower Cool... I don't happen to be working with bicycle cables though... My cables are similar, but the inside cable is about 3/16" thick and the OD of the housing is about 3/8". Obviously a totally unrelated but was hoping to find answers here. Just in case there's info, I'll just describe it here: My cables are for a passenger-side brake pedal for a driving school car. Via pulleys, when the passenger-side pedal is depressed, it pulls down the driver-side pedal. Obviously heavy duty, and this kind of cable frays quite easily after cutting, probably because it has a lot more strands. If you have answers they're welcome but if not that's cool.

I would like to swap my front and rear brakes putting my front brake on my right hand ( like my motorcycle and scooter ). Can I get enough slack with the existing cables? Are there any gotchas in trying to do this?
@PedalWithPower
@PedalWithPower 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron, if you can screw in the barrel adjusters on the levers and on the calipers, that might give you enough slack to pop the ends out of the levers and swap them. If not, you'll need to loosen the cinch bolt on the caliper, swap the cables at the levers, then tighten the cable again at the cinch bolt. I can do a video, showing how 👍

Is it necessary to lubricate the brake cables?
@PedalWithPower
@PedalWithPower 2 жыл бұрын
It can help if your housing is getting sticky, but not necessary when these bikes run full housing from the lever to the caliper. Lubing cables is far more important on bikes with housing breaks and exposed cables. If you pull your cable out and it looks rusty, then it time to replace the housing also.
@mrslcom
@mrslcom 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris. Before I thought lubrication might also make it easier and smoother to pull the brake levers, especially for the rear brake due to its longer cable length.
@PedalWithPower
@PedalWithPower 2 жыл бұрын
@@mrslcom It certainly can and it does help, but I just wouldn't say it's "necessary". If you have it, you can certainly use it!

@PedalWithPower
@PedalWithPower 2 жыл бұрын
@@trini_boi2414 Make sure the cable is at least 2000mm or longer. Not all brake cables are the same length. It can be frustrating. Have them measure the cable, a lot of bulk cables from bike shops are not that long. At my shop the bulk cables are only 1700mm and won't reach for the rear. Ask if they have longer brake cables for tandems or trikes 👍
