If you are in the middle class bracket, it is tough. Children are lovely but expensive to raise. Plus surely you want them to have better life than you. In today’s age, parenthood doesn’t stop when they are 18/21. Most parents these days set their up for life ( buying them a house etc) in addition to school/college education. Plus vacations and experiences..

A good discussion for affluent parents. I am a parent of a 9 year old and so far we have managed to keep our child off from mobile/internet but we see the peers engaged on internet already. For sure, the demand will come in few years. I wanted to understand how modern day parents are managing this aspect of raising kid(s)? In modern day double income households, spending money is the easiest and spending time is the most difficult thing. How to we strike the right balance ?

With all due respect to the two participants, with all of their achievements, and a with a lot of good points to ponder about, the discussion was too 'sophisticated' and focused on upper/rich middle class tier Indian society. The discussion was too tied up with managing wealth/ creating corpus etc. Kids are gifts of god that have to preserved as such. With all of their material needs, parents also need to think about their spiritual requirements without which the nurturing is incomplete. We turned parents at late age after a lot of struggles. We were settled abroad and had paid 100% fee to our IVF consultant. We had done our rounds at CARA center in Delhi for adoption too. Then we turned to Sahaja Yoga meditation as advised by someone. Lo and behold, my wife gave birth at the ripe age of 43. Was an unbelievable experience. Life has turned around since. You cannot plan everything in life. Some things have to be left to unfold.

For any birthdays or celebrations, instead of accepting gifts, we put a donation box for a charity and strictly tell people to not buy gifts and instead contribute to a cause/charity we choose. It has taken a 3-5 years for people to finally accept and not buy gifts. Initially some people forcefully gifted. Now about 80% of attendees accept our wish and choose to donate. Gifting has its place but is also leading to a wasteful spending and poor quality toys being circulated. When going to other people's events, I buy them a charity voucher that they use to give to charity or split into charities of their choice. People have also started accepting that now. Look for charity giving options in your country.

I do not remember ever spending my time/energy to comment on online content but I felt the need to spread awareness as special needs is a topic very close to my heart. When both the speaker said the word “NORMAL CHILD” at 24:14 - 24:20 may be in future you could use a better term like child with no additional needs because the term normal indicates that children with additional needs are not normal. I am sure your intention were pure when you used word normal but it can have huge impact on a someone who is disabled or have loved one who has special needs.

@Rue747Ай бұрын
They're sharing their own experiences. Mostly upper middle class and upper class families will be able to relate to this. What's noteworthy here is how the general middle class wants the upper class life, get their kids into schools attended by kids of upper class families, and struggle to give their kids the same lifestyle. It resonated with me personally since I attended such a school, and I struggled emotionally since I felt I didn't belong- the host and guest did talk about the feeling of alienation.

Why don't we just teach our kids that the world comes in all shades and sizes and its OK , if someone else has more of something..but teach them that they might have some other skills .. BTW I m an Indian American parent who raised my kids in Manhattan,facing similar issues..i have also lived in South Bombay when my son was born and first two years .back in the day and have to say, it was much easier and more inclusive in Manhattan, though the school system is more competitive..but.Mumbai and desi parents are way more toxic on this aspect of showing off ..money wise. Maybe time for some parents to swing that pendulum back..no one cares if you had a birthday party or not, if you set the stage by normalizing not having a large one .
