My self build Rammed Earth Passivehause. This is how I heat and cool the house using radiant ceiling panels.
System design was done by the great people ‪@Thermahexx-ThermaPANEL‬
Thermostats and controllers by HBX
Heat exchanger, buffer tank, water heater and mixing valves from ‪@chiltrixchillerheatpumpcom2864‬
Big thanks to Bob for inventing such a great product.
Thank you Matt ‪@buildshow‬ for introducing me to the concept of radiant cooling.

Looks really neat, thanks for sharing. Might want to rotate the indoor main circ pump so the electronics are on the top side. By now you might have insulated the water/glycol pipes at the outdoor unit the rest of the way?

I know it should be rotated, but I don't have the space for that. So far the mixing valve has kept me from having any condensation. Thanks for the reminder on making sure all the pipes get insulated fully.

Just Massanna. I didnt get much further than reading brochures on their website. At the time there wasn't much of anway for me to reach out to them.

I look forward to the 1 year review. Also curious how the humidity is being controlled. Just keeping temperature to prevent condensation doesn’t control the humidity in the house. Is there a whole house dehumidifier?
@stanfordjensen1465
@stanfordjensen1465 Ай бұрын
No dehumidifier, My ERV handles some of it. Otherwise it's not a problem here in the arid deserts of Utah. We're sitting on average at 30% RH. I wouldn't mind putting in a humidifier to bring that up to 40%.

I’d love to chat with you about concerns for different dew point levels in your house, also I’d like to know any lessons learned you might have as I hope to start building a house this spring

@Stanford during your research, did you see anything comparing the Therma-Hexx to the Messana Ray Magic?

I learned of Messana first through podcasts and watching Matt Risinger @buildshow. I never compared the two directly.

Love what you have going here, did you run into any other manufacturers that help with radiant cooling?

Thinking about doing something similar. How’s it been working?

It's still going strong. We really appreciate how little we have to think about it and were reminded how nice it is to control the temp in each room when we visit somewhere else and they have rooms that are too cold or too hot.

Hi, I've been looking into thermal cooling a bit lately. I'm up in Logan UT, and would like to rely on Geothermal/ground source. Is this something that you also considered? I know it is hard to find a Water to water Heat "and" cooling pump. I know therma hexx does a great job distributing/absorbing energy. Now that we have had a hot summer how has your system performed during the summer? I'm considering building a 40ishx40ish bardo, and having the ceiling running the cooling during the summer. Your feedback would be very much appreciated. Thanks Stanford.

Your build sounds awesome. We 2 summers with the system now and its worked perfectly. It keeps the house at a comfortable temperature. I really wanted to do geothermal and even talked to an engineer who had designed and implemented a couple. He talked me out of geo. Two big reasons. number 1, if anything goes wrong with the buried pipes you have to redo the entire system. and 2 the systems he's done haven't been as efficient as they were supposed to be. I was also in a hurry at that point to get done and what I did was quicker.

I have that same manifold, did u have any problem with is working being mounted upside down?

It's working fine, I have one actuator that stopped working right away. I haven't looked into why. It's for the set next to the front door and I'm ok if they're open all the time. I'm sure I'll get around to fixing it eventually.

What was the cost for this system? What’s the anticipated ROI?
@stanfordjensen1465
@stanfordjensen1465 Ай бұрын
For me it was probably 4 to 5 times the cost of central air. I was going for the best for health and comfort for my PHIUS build. If I was going for ROI I would have done a coal furnace like my dad. He probably spends less than $200 a year on heating coal and electricity combined.

Oversizing a system can be a issue. Bigger is not necessarily better in HVAC. I hope this works out for comfort all year long.

Thanks, it's been working out really well. I wish they made half ton heat exchangers for ultra energy efficient builds like mine.
