I've read all the books up to ADWD like 10 times, and yet your podcast always teaches me something new about the books. Whether it was something I overlooked or something i missed completely or even not being smart enough to pick up on some of the finer details, you's always have my back. And for that i thank you. I have been listening to your podcast since the beginning and i haven't regretted it since....

I think Jamie’s attitude towards Sybell Westerling is more disgust, not indifference. He feels they got what they deserved for their deception.

The over simplification of the Freys actions is not fair. Walder Frey agreed to terms and Robb accepted giving him his word as a king. Walder lost his eldest son fighting for Robb, thousands of soldiers in the war, went against the sitting king (treason), lots of gold from his war chest and risked destroying his family since Freys fought on both sides of the war. Then all of a sudden this boy king breaks his word and honor to save the honor of a girl born to a house which he is fighting against. The boy king makes things worse by losing the war e.g battle of Duskendale where he lost 1/3 of his army & the Greyjoys took his Castle (Winterfell). What options did Walder have when Tywin & Roose approached him? Was he going to go against them for the liar king who can't keep his word? IMO the Freys had a valid reason for what they did in that context. If Robb can't keep his word then why should Walder? The Starks aren't the good guys they are just the main POV characters.

Interestingly, the examples you cite were the result of other acts of treachery (Bolton & Greyjoy) and not directly attributable to Robb's leadership. Over the series we made the case that the roots of Bolton's treachery stretch as far back as the engagement at the Green Fork and are motivated by personal ambition and a history of conflict between House Stark and House Bolton. At the same time, the breach of contract with House Frey does not excuse the breaking of guest right, which is a sacred law that is one of the foundations of Westerosi culture. As we said in the episode failures of leadership in Robb's reign and military campaign in no way accounted for the complete abandonment of honor and rules of military engagement by the principal actors in the Red Wedding (that is House Bolton and Frey) both of whom were sworn to House Stark and had no legitimate justification for the extremes to which they sunk. Sure Walder Frey would have been justified in withdrawing his support, and refusing to negotiate the Crossing. The Lannisters would have had to be content with Robb trapped in the Riverlands where they could encircle him and finish him off in honorable battle. There are shades of gray everywhere in this series, but the dishonor of Walder Frey's "ugly chicken" as Tyrion calls it, is his alone to own. -LG
