And it goes further than that: the first line is "Stay in the shadows" and the final line is "Don't leave". Which could be interpreted as "Stay, even if it's at a distance, in the background, but please don't leave us."

this album was released a few months before Thom Yorke's (back in the day, recent) ex-wife died of cancer and, if i remember correctly, while Jonny Greenwood was working in Phantom Thread's soundtrack. that's why the lyrics are so particularly melancholic and the instrumentals have so many "classical" instruments such as piano, violins, cellos and such.

I remember hearing the live acoustic performance of True Love Waits back in high school and loving for years. when I first listened to A Moon Shaped Pool, I didn't pay attention to the track listing while it was playing, and the second Thom sang the opening line I burst into tears...because I'd been waiting for an official studio version for over 15 years

Radiohead has stayed at the hotel where I work 3 times. It’s small enough they can buy it out and be the only guests. Im sure it won’t be a surprise to say how nice and kind they are. One stay Thom was friendly and my buddy and Jonny another.stay. Generally it’s best with celebrity guests not to talk to them about them. Your favorite movie of theirs etc. But after talking to Thom a couple days I told him I was sorry but I had to say that when a new Radiohead album comes out I can barely get 3 songs in before I need to go work on my own songs. That’s how inspiring they are. He looked down and said that’s so very kind to say.

So the ending of Daydreaming is Thom saying in reverse "Half of my life" which I believe refers to the amount of time he was in a relationship with his long term partner Dr Rachel Owen who he separated from during the development of the album. Sadly Rachel was diagnosed with cancer and passed away not long after the albums release. True Love Waits is a song written about Rachel and was in development since The Bends if i remember correctly however they weren't able to get it quite right in the studio until nearly 20 or so years later OKNOTOK (the 20th anniversary expanded edition of OK Computer) is dedicated to her memory. Also Nigel Godrich (long time producer and unofficial member) lost his father during production too also adding to the sombre tone of the album

The sort of broken strings at the end of Daydreaming leading into the distorted growling always gets me. Something about it feels to me viscerally like a hurt or dying creature, trying to will itself back up to its feet and falling down over and over until it takes its labored final breaths. Radiohead really just is so special.

"And true love lives on lollipops and crisps" is one of the most heart-breaking lyrics ever written if you look up what Thom was referencing: He had once read a newspaper article about a tragic incident where a young child around 5 years old was left alone in his home for a week as his parents left on holiday. After a week of being alone it was found that he survived by eating the only food he could reach: Lolipops and chips. This is the instinctive desperate love being described in the following chorus: "Dont leave... don't leave..."

Back in 2018, when i wasn't much of a Radiohead fan. I was watching the pilot episode of Ozark, which had a very dark tone. The ending was making me feel particularly gloomy as the main character stepped out of his car, and started letting out an anguished cry and suddenly, a Radiohead song started playing, and the opening lyrics "Then into your life, there comes a darkness" with it's eerie atmosphere it created; It instantly converted me into a Radiohead fan. After that, I dove deep into their discography, listening to every album they'd released. I completely agree with the sentiment that this song feels like it could be Radiohead's final track. There's something about its mood and composition that gives it a sense of finality.

The strange mangled vocals at the end of Daydreaming are a backwards sample of Thom singing “half of my life, half of my life” - when this album came out he had just split up with his wife after 23 years of marriage. At the time of this album’s release he was ~46… meaning literally half of his life was spent with her. This album is a GORGeous, orchestral, cinematic tribute not only to their marriage but also a culmination of Radiohead’s whole discography. ALSO.. when you get on to The King of Limbs.. I’d highly recommend checking out Radiohead’s TKOL From The Basement.. it is SO GOOD

And the last one... True love waits was writen after Thom heard a story about a kid that was locked in an atic, he was only being surviving by eating lollipops and crisps... the kid eventually died. I always listen to music while I sleep. My mom died like 5 yeras ago, and one night i dream about her, i felt like a little boy again and i saw my mommy in my dreams, i huged her and the song i was hearing in my dreams was "True Love Waits" then i woke up and i just heard the last seconds of the song just to finally fall asleep again... ❤

Small correction, Thom himself mentioned that he read an article about a kid who was left alone for a week as the parents were on holiday, and survived by eating the only food he could reach: Lolipops and Chips. The child did survive, and nothing was said about him being locked in an attic. The lines of the song about haunted attic, most people interpret as unrelated to the article. As others have said Thom Yorke's wife was dying of cancer at the time of this album being made and the 2 got separated the year previous. They had been together for 23 years and had 2 kids together. She also designed the cover art for a few of their singles. A large part of AMSP centers around this breakup and illness, the ending of Daydreaming being him repeating "Half of my life" and in Present Tense him saying "as my world comes crashing down". In 2017, the band dedicated the 10 year anniversary edition of OK Computer OKNOTOK version to her memory.

I pray members of Radiohead find these reactions of yours, because I haven’t seen a better embodiment of the rollercoaster of emotion that the band creates with their music reflected on someone’s face and all of their body language than yours. We get the anxiety, the unbridled joy, the fear, the happiness, the straight dirty good sound they create, and just the general awe and appreciation of the beautiful sounds they created by watching you absorb it. Radiohead is somehow both rated extremely highly as musicians and severely underrated, and your reaction reminds me just how good they really are.

True Love Waits is kind of a special moment for Radiohead fans. It was written VERY early in the bands career (there's different stories on this but I've heard it was as far back as Pablo Honey if not earlier), and they've played it live fairly regularly since then but they keep changing how it sounds. The most famous version of it for years was a live recording of Thom playing it by himself with an acoustic guitar (which honestly might still be my favourite version). It's been a fan favourite for literally decades at this point, and always a special moment in their live sets, but they were never satisfied with any recorded versions they tried. So finally getting it here is a big deal. Choosing to close the album with it has lead to a lot of speculation amongst fans that this is truly the bands last album ever, like a way of saying thank you and goodbye. Luckily it seems like that's not going to be the case (couple of the members have mentioned the band plans to work on something new soon, they've all been busy with side projects for a while now) but it would be a fantastic send off if it turned out to be the case.

@@ladrac198 They've been getting together recently to, quote: "rehearse". Seems like they have another tour coming up, maybe more than that. But even if it's just for another tour (30th anniversary of The Bends?), they've always said that going on tour together is when they come up with most of their new music and are at their most creative. We've never heard anything from them to suggest this will be their last album, and on the contrary we've heard from multiple band members suggesting they have every intention of doing another, eventually. But yeah, their various side projects have taken up a lot of their time. I think we can safely blame some large global events as being disruptive as well. The biggest obstacle seems to have been their inability to all just get in a room together with all their instruments and equipment, rather than any personal conflicts or a desire to stop making music. Any time we hear of them getting in a room together we should take as a good sign. Anyway, we'll have a much better idea of what's coming if they do indeed go on another tour in the near-ish future. They always debut new music at concerts, and a bunch of new material coming out of those would be the best evidence of a new album being worked on. In Radiohead fashion we probably won't get any announcement at all until very shortly before it's available for sale. Likely just a random "oh by the way" message from one of the members a week before another masterpiece drops completely out of the blue. I want to believe.

@@John.Christopher Maybe maybe. The boys have always been known to surprise. I'd love another US tour road testing material but any way they want to do the next offering is going to be a beautiful thing to me.

Fabulous reaction! True Love Waits is truly something else. The version on I Might Be Wrong is also incredible. As other people have said, Hail To The Thief is your next stop! And if you ever do a reaction to their singles and b-sides, their Bond theme Spectre is one of their best songs. Have fun!

Incredible reaction as always . Pretty close to how I felt first time I heard this album. I think the name of the album in my interpretation is a bout a " pool" of memories and emotions in our hearts from all our lives and how we swim in this "Heart Shaped Pool " For answers really . 😢 Devastating album , this record is one of my best friends . Greetings from Mexico

You still have Hail to the Thief to listen to! Another near-perfect album ino, and King of Limbs is underrated in their discography... we don't talk about Pablo Honey😂

if this is the end of Radioheads lifespan it is a perfect one. The song has existed as a live recordingsince 1995. "Live in Oslo" It all goes full circle. You should really give it a listen!

A lot of people do obsess about Radiohead. They just do it in private, while contemplating their existence.

I ABSOLUTELY recommend Hail to the Thief next. 2 + 2 = 5 is one of my favorite songs ever, and myxomatosis is also beautiful. Definitely worth it.

Thanks for your frank and honest Radiohead reactions, K8 the Gr8. I missed a couple of them, or maybe you didn't react to their complete library. You seem very vested in their musical message-so please continue to The King of Limbs-one of their most underrated masterpieces, Hail to the thief, excellent, but also underrated. If you're a perfectionist, like me, you may also want to react to Pablo Honey, but that's not necessary. There's also I may be wrong-a collection of live performances. Sorry to go on so long, but your reactions are so enjoyable and entertaining, I'd like to see more. Thanks.

Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead went on to make a new band, The Smile. I would recommend their second album "Wall of Eyes". It's much less depressing than a moon shaped pool!

Just a thought: Considering how much you love the strings in this band, I wonder if you'd be a fan of String quartets, or symphonies! They also use a lot of classical music in their composition, so it would be a natural transition for you!! And such a great point about people needing to move from Taylor to these guys! Alot of Gen Zers on KZbin have a very emotional reactions to them, understandably so! But your reactions still take the cake! Thanks again!

Before you move on k8, can I recommend you check out in your own time two little films from director Paul Thomas Anderson for the songs The Numbers and Present Tense. They are so beautifully shot and the acoustic arrangements are incredible.

Daydreaming for me is the most unsettling peice of music I've ever heard. I don't know if it's an anxiety induced nightmare or a hauntingly beautiful dream. Thought provoking and brilliant nevertheless.

I genuinely think this album is part of the RADIOHEAD HOLY TRINITY (with OK Computer and Kid A)… It’s THAT good. People have severely underrated what a true masterpiece this is. It’s like the band spent some time listening to the strings on Elton John’s “MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER” album… particularly the title track. Absolutely. brilliant.
