Such a beautiful album! Though at this point it's probably best to save AMSP for last, it's such a perfect closer for this nine album journey. Listen to Pablo Honey, The Bends, Hail to the Thief and The King of Limbs first, and then A Moon Shaped Pool. (Side note: Pablo Honey will probably be underwhelming after already having listened to OK Computer, Kid A/Amnesiac and In Rainbows. They were not yet on that full on Radiohead level of the later albums. But I think Pablo Honey is still nice, in its genre. Best to approach it as a solid alternative rock album from that time.)

You're right, Thom Yorke wrote Pyramid Song in 20 minutes according to him. But he tends to deprecate his most brilliant songs as if they're just fun little pop tunes. Meanwhile people have been arguing for 22 years about what time signature it is. It's regular 4/4, but doesn't sound like it. Trust Thom to write a song the same as most other pop tunes but make it sound like an ancient extraterrestrial message. (Also, to answer your question about when I'd listen to this - Amnesiac truly saved my life at a time when I had a severe depression, and though it sounds strange, listening to this album every night before going to bed actually made me feel better. Today though I save it only for those rare moments of angst when I need to VENT 😂

The rhythm is swung. One of the many jazz influences on this album (and Radiohead's work has increasingly been influenced by jazz. Although even the OG composers centuries ago were doing crazy triplets and stuff. Radiohead sounds endlessly inventive but they're really just very willing to steal good ideas from all over the place, from musical styles that also stole good ideas from all over the place. Creativity is often just confidence, confidence to do something unexpected instead of the obvious.

@@Teeheehee093 There's been a lot of jazz influence on Radiohead, and that's been showing up in their work for longer than many people realize. These guys are serious music nerds who got a lot of exposure to wildly different sorts of music from a young age hanging out with their music teacher back in school together before they ever formed a band. They started playing rock because that was cool and that's what got them their big break, but they were never really a rock band, they were just a band that played rock and also wanted to play other stuff too. Lucky for us they got a chance to eventually really get experimental and pull in all those other influences and just try to make the best music they can, regardless of genre. I like to joke that their next album is going to be rap or heavy metal or something, and that honestly wouldn't surprise me. But the way things have gone, I think they'll continue to bring in more of the classical influences, electronica, and do it with weird jazzy style.

So Like Spinning Plates, Thoms vocals during the verse are actually sung backwards and reversed giving the uncannny feel. The instrumental is actually a reversed demo of a song that they never were able to get quite right during the recording of Kid A/Amnesiac. That track would later be released as I Will on 2003's Hail To The Thief. They took the original backing track they made and reversed it as an experiment and expanded upon it

Yes. While it's certainly more uneven than some of Radiohead's other albums, it is still a very good one, all in all, and it isn't as conventional as some people think. It may not be as innovative or experimental as Radiohead's previous three albums but it manages to pack quite a few surprises for people who listen to it for the first time. It's also very interesting thematically: Thom has said that, at the time the band started working on it, he was very concerned about the future and certain things that were happening in the political landscape, especially because he had recently become a parent, which is why the album contains references to Thom's son Noah, fairy tales, and even children's TV shows (such as Bagpuss) he watched with his kid. I guess a good way to get people to give the album a chance would be to describe it the way I read in some website: an album with political themes distilled into a fairy-tale-ish form. Or, if they're music theory buffs, challenge them to count the number of time signature changes in Sail to the Moon ;-)

1. this album and kid a were written and recorded around the same time. following the tour for ok computer, the lead singer thom yorke had a breakdown, and struggled with figuring out where to go with the band next, ultimately deciding to go in the more electronic direction we know now! 2. a lot of people are going to recommend a moon shaped pool or the bends next, but i’d personally recommend hail to the thief, since it sorta bridges the gap between this album and in rainbows. in my opinion, it’s one of their best 3. if you’re interested, i’d highly recommend checking out the kid amnesia experience that was released a few years ago. it’s like a digital museum you can explore that puts some really beautiful visuals to the songs off kid a and amnesiac

Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead guitarist, does all the string arrangements for the band too. It’s amazing that he does this because it’s not like a band hiring someone from somewhere to write strings for them, which would work, but it wouldn’t have the same signature time and time again for their songs. They actually have a band member that does it and so there is a personal touch that Jonny gives to their work in their discography. And it’s just super cool that one of their band members is a composer. He has done a lot of scores for Paul Thomas Anderson movies. I recommend There Will Be Blood to watch because it’s an incredible movie and to also hear Jonny’s score which is widely recognized as one of the greatest movie scores ever.

Pull/Pulk Revolving Doors started out as an attempt to record True Love Waits (which if you haven't gotten to A Moon Shaped Pool yet you won't know why that's significant), but that song is sacred in Radiohead lore). They worked on it for 20 years before finally putting it out. But this was an attempt that didn't work, and the result is this track. It's very much just an experiment.

"life in a glasshouse" was the first Radiohead song i've heard, and after all these years, it remains my favorite, probably because of this noltalgic feeling. We all know that it's not possible to rank Radiohead's song, so when I say it's my favorite, it's pure noltalgia. God, how I love this album, not only the discography, but also the cover of the album. Amazing work from them, as usual. Prepare for Hail to the thief, it has some bangers in there, such as "We suck young blood" and "2+2=5".

Some other Radiohead's songs might have been showed throughout the series, but this was the one that made fall in love with the band and search for more. Funny enough, after "Life in a glasshouse", I decided to seach for their music, end up bumping into "Fitter happpier". My reaction was : "What the hell am I listening to?" (nowadays, fitter happier is one of my favorite song, alongside with all their discograpy). I remember stop searching immediately; But the thing is, I coud not stop listening to "Life in a glasshouse" for the next 3 months, so I gave another try. This time, "Daydreaming" was the one listened, but it may me stay. After that, I've heard all of it, little by little, enjoying every second of it.

Like Spinning Plates is a subtle sounding emotional journey-Radiohead usually perform the song with piano live. My favorite version is from the Radiohead Kid A'mnesiac art exhibition, called the Why us? version-it is amazing. So glad you enjoyd this album, because it is one of my absolute favorites. I can't understand why so many fans don't like or appreciate it. I like to listen to Radiohead when I cook dinner for my family , or late at night, when I'm relaxing, or reflecting on my day.

If you crave more Radiohead once you've finished with their albums, they've got an astonishing catalog of b-side bangers for you to keep digging into 😅 To answer your questions: when I was in high school and college in the 90s/early 00s I listened to Radiohead on the bus a LOT - and as for live Radiohead, you should check out any of the live "Let Down" performances from their 2016 tour (there are a few on KZbin), and also the 1995 debut of "True Love Waits" (miraculously, also on KZbin).

I've had all the LPs for years (bought a few on multiple formats over the decades, too), and the Street Spirit EP from way back in the day and few other bits and bobs (Harry Patch, Spectre...). I've been worried about ever running out of new Radiohead so I've deliberately rationed myself on the various B-sides and rarities. Only recently allowed myself the OKNOTOK second disk. Man of War is incredible. Next up is the The Daily Mail/Staircase, I think, I keep hearing good things, but I'll hold out a while longer. I was raised on Radiohead thanks to my mom and Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief are truly their best albums, in my opinion. I know they are some of the more underappreciated ones, but there's just something about Amnesiac, especially, that is just so uniquely soul crushing and dark yet comforting, compared to their other albums. My reflections: Morning Bell/Amnesiac - Thinking about divorce and separation. Packt Like Sardines In a Crushd Tin Box - It's like the world is overpopulating and creating our downfall. Knives Out - Cannibalism, cults forming, etc. Pyramid Song - Thinking about all the people who have either died to protect others, from mental health, old age, circumstance, etc. And it makes you wonder what death is really like, being very curious. Like, you're scared to know, but you cannot stop thinking about what comes after. Truly an emotional song. Life In a Glasshouse - Being observed 24/7, feeling paranoia kick in, and somehow you just embrace it. Knowing Thom Yorke is also vegan, it makes me think of the torture that animals go through in animal agriculture and how things would be different if everything in liffe was met with transparency. Just my thoughts. Of course, other songs are just as cool like I Might Be Wrong or You and Whose Army?

Ngl, watching you discover Radiohead has become one of my new mini-obsessions! It's funny you ask about when do we listen to Radiohead during THIS album specifically, because Amnesiac helped carry me thru the last grueling year of getting my BFA in painting. All the days and nights spent in the painting studio, the printing studio, the sculpture yard, the gallery. All the digging to emotional depths and intellectual heights to try and mine the best creative concepts. All the hours toiling away at honing technical skills, deep dive researching into art history and analysis of contemporary movements, and critiquing my own work to death as well as theirs with my fellow students. It was A LOT lol - but in the best way possible. And this + Kid A was part of the perfect soundtrack for it. Sure, I still put on Radiohead all the time, particularly when I'm feeling moody and esoteric 😏 - but every time I hear it, it always takes me back to that time for at least a moment or two ❤

some of the best music ever made is difficult at first. most of my now-favorite bands were a head scratch for me upon initial listen.

Somebody might've already commented this but Kid A and Amnesiac were actually recorded in the same studio sessions. Amnesiac is sort of like the songs that didnt "make it" on to Kid A which is insane considering how good they still are

Obviously, you still have A Moon Shaped Pool, which I think you should listen to before The Bends, then Hail To The Thief and then The King Of Limbs (my least favorite), and you should also give their first album, Pablo Honey, a fair shot, as there are a handful of great songs on there as well, including the remix for Blow Out. You should also listen to a lot of their B-sides, and also certain versions, like both versions of Banana Co. and Killer Cars, Fog (only the original version, which is one of my all-time favorite songs period), Spector (their would-be James Bond theme), the live version of Like Spinning Plates from their live album, India Rubber, Talk Show Host (From Romeo + Juliet), Pearly, Cuttooth, Lift, Man Of War, and If You Say The Word, just to name a few of the most important essentials. You should also watch/listen to their live show for the promotion of In Rainbows, From The Basement. . . and all of their music videos are awesome. You should also listen to much of Thom Yorke's solo work, especially his first solo album, Atoms For Peace, including the amazing Four Tet remix of the title track. Also, Thom has done some great collaborations, such as his duets on I've Seen It All with Bjork, This Mess We're In with PJ Harvey, and Rabbit In Your Headlights with UNKLE. Plus, in the last few years Thom and Johnny Greenwood have formed an awesome new band called The Smile with another Drummer, and they are about to release their third album in a few weeks. . . . and there's a whole bunch more. . .

Wow that was fast! Another Radiohead album, Geat! Keep them coming, i'll watch them all. Radiohead tinker for long time to make the perfect songs. They've released a few different version of the same song across their albums, as they couldn't quite settle on one, like Morning Bell & Fog. They work so hard on their music that the band about breaks up before an album finishes. Because they fight over every little detail.

since you have already went through a bunch of devastating masterpieces, I feel like I have the perfect recommendation for you if you want to check out an underrated masterpiece in that field. The album is Songs About Leaving by Carissa's Wierd. Interesting for you to know is that Carissa's Wierd shows up on Spotify in the "Fans also like" section for Have A Nice Life, Giles Corey, The Microphones and Mount Eerie. Songs about Leaving is really melancholic and what is so special about it is the extremely beautiful instrumentation. I would absolutely love to see so reaction to this masterpiece

First time i listened to this all the way through, i was at work alone at my overnight job at a processing plant. I was really disturbed by it and branded it as the creepiest album i ever listened to (Spinning Plates is what really did it) I was on the threshold of a major nervous breakdown then, so i guess i was on the same wavelength as this album, in the worst way. Nowadays, this album is a rocking good time. It's a reminder that i survived some pretty heinous stuff and I'm still here.

my favorite radiohead album! "when do you listen to this??" Haha! Honestly you're doing it right, right now. For me, headphones, go take a walk. Listen to it and watch a band of sunlight dapple across your wall. Put it on at night when your house is dimly lit by maybe some candles/colored lights and i'm doing chores. this album, actually... when i was reading the Dune series for the first time i'd play this on repeat. for some reason I just travel to "God Emperor of Dune" when i hear this album. I listened to Kid A and OK Computer a decent amount, but when this came out this was the one that CLICKED an to this day it just... has a soft spot. No idea why it's not more well-regarded (my 2nd fav being In Rainbows) Amazing stuff...
