I've heard the song is about someone sitting in their car, inhaling the exhaust fumes hence "Handshake of carbon monoxide."

I don't know how his answer to this question has changed over the years, but there was a time when lead singer Thom Yorke said "How To Disappear Completely" would be the one song of his he'd want to be remembered for. FWIW

This song is among my top 10 favorites of all time. It had personal meaning for me back in the day. I still find the song meaningful.

This song is my personal favorite Radiohead song, just because the meaning of the sing sticks very close to me. To me, the lyrics and song is simply about slowly dying away, much like you said in your video. I set this song as my alarm, so when I get up every day at 6:30 AM, it remindsme of the simplicity of life. People lie, we work too much for no reasons, and slowly die away.

You’re so spot on about the idea about how he’s bored at his office job- that’s part of the theme to the album that this song is on. To get a peak/listen to what this album is about is to listen to the track/interlude “Fitter, Happier”

My favorite Radiohead song, after my father's passing, I used to go swim at the park late at night and listen to this on repeat. I still catch myself listening to this late at night in my bed.

Finally breaking into OK Computer I see. To me this is almost like a lullaby and fills the same sonic space that Let Down from the same record does to the point where I often mix them up. This one is a little more straightforward compared to the former but has a very beautifully shot video. I kinda feel it fits more on The Bends album but a nice song nonetheless. Look forward to more: Pyramid Song All I Need Go Slowly Sail to the moon Just You Bodysnatchers

I think sometimes people forget to listen to the actual song because they're either watching the video or trying too hard to work out what they're singing about.
@ExileOnDaytonStreet4 жыл бұрын
The general theme of the entire album that this came from (OK Computer) is one of being overwhelmed by the world around you. The songs take on different approaches to this theme (this one is weariness at the stresses of the world around you: work, complaints, government, and how things like a nice house don't solve all that).

This was a single from OK COMPUTER (1997) one of their albums I hear a lot about (this and KID A). Apparently this was recorded in one take and they ended up using the first take. The lyrics do seem to be about escapism from the everyday struggles, I thought your extended interpretation on the video was interesting too beyond the in your face aspects presented. The 'Lullaby' feel kinda reminds me a bit of SNOW PATROL's song YOU COULD BE HAPPY (2006) in a way.

Great song like a beautiful lullaby about suicide then just a plea for peace in his life like a lot of middle aged people their earlier stuff is generally more simple still great though and there later stuff more complicated and still great.

I think the “such a pretty house, and such a pretty garden” is an oblique reference to how the things that society and a 9-5 teaches you to aspire towards are worthless and bring no happiness - no matter how pretty they are, the narrator is still utterly hollow and defeated.

this song feels post-apocalyptic to me - the reminiscence of how shit life was before and the bullshit "peace" you were sold - the video almost feels like an experiment subject (matrix-ish) waking up in their little pod again and realising this isnt any better, but it isnt worse either. maybe they chose to be there to get away from their life (just wanted peace). someone comes in, turns on the lights, and you wonder if you'll die when the water rises this time.. and youre suprised to realise youre happy when you dont.. only now, your freedom is gone, and it's too late. it's.. the ultimate downside to suicide; not living long enough to realise living might be better.
