As far as Radiohead being commercially successful despite not being radio friendly.. Yeah they kinda broke all the rules and rewrote them. To rarely put out singles yet having DJs go out of their way to find and play them, to making their own prices for albums (the pay what you want stunt for In Rainbows), all of the unconventional writing structures.. they might as well be an underground jazz band that just so happens to be one of if not the most successful modern British rock band. Its crazy yet completely fitting to the path they've laid out for themselves over the past 3 decades. A band like no other.

It's interesting that you mention stop motion. The official music video for this was actually a stop motion animation. For In Rainbows they had fans and amateur filmmakers submit their own ideas for a music video for I believe every song on the album, if not most. And the band picked their favorites to be released.

This is my favorite Radiohead song. Right ahead of All I Need. Its such a beautiful and technically performed masterpiece on all fronts. Arpeggi is the first part of the song (the repeating arpeggios) that they had been working through their live shows for awhile then it evolved into Weird Fishes at the end over time. I hope you revisit this album or at least a few through "The Basement" live sessions. The meaning to me is kinda like a macabre love long. Being drawn into a siren like beauty that leads him to his ultimate demise at the bottom at the sea. Other fantastic tracks: All I Need Street Spirit Pyramid Song Daydreaming

The live version of this at Jools Holland where Jonny and Ed literally stand directly in front of one another, guitars almost touching, play the arpeggiating guitar parts. Fantastic!
@SOMA-no2gq4 жыл бұрын
I love that performance (as well as any proshot performance of the song) but the intimate setting of the Basement sessions can't be matched. Everyone is so focused and concentrated. The dueling guitars then Thom comes in making it a 3 guitar attack into this dream world they build up. Ed's backing vocals just elevate it into another level.. Perfect song.

@@SOMA-no2gq Basement version of In Rainbows is so good. I watch it all the time. Isn't Weird Fishes the opener on that?
@SOMA-no2gq4 жыл бұрын
@@LuckykidA I believe it is. There are a few different chopped up versions of it but it was the original opener. The opening banter between bandmates before they just jump head first into this beauty. I recommend anyone to watch the whole set plus the bonus tracks are a must. All I Need blew me away and I already adored it. Go Slowly is another hidden gem. Videotape here is probably the closest proshot performance to the Bonnaroo live version you'll get. Im disappointed they stripped that song down so much on the album. It was so energetic with Jonny banging away with his percussive strikes, you can hear the syncopation in it on that Bonnaroo version.
@LuckykidA4 жыл бұрын
@@SOMA-no2gq I'm actually a late arrival to the Bonaroo version. Its wonderful. It's crazy to hear the real beat without it being assumed. The stripped down version requires one who knows and "feels" the syncopated beat to then mentally fill the pieces in. It's a strange kind of beauty. I may like the stripped down version simply out of familiarity. It has become a part of me. This band is like NO OTHER.
@SOMA-no2gq4 жыл бұрын
@@LuckykidA Yes its like a party in the bands head while they perform it. But it shouldn't have been stripped down. Even Thom was mad they cut it down in the studio while he was away. But it is what it is. More people would love it if they heard the original intent.

Kid A is definitely out there and Amnesiac might as well be Kid A pt 2 because a lot of the songs came from the Kid A writing sessions. King of Limbs is the one album that didn't land well with me and took a while for me to truly appreciate it. The basement sessions for it helped a lot as well.

Its understandable if its a little too weird for you. Since you like creep and maybe more ballad like tracks i would suggest trying the following: Street Spirit All I Need Bulletproof..I wish I was Just Bodysnatchers The first three lean more on the ballad side and the last two are probably the most straight forward rock songs you'll get from them. Maybe these might appeal to you or maybe they're just not the band for you which is also OK. Hope you give them a shot.

@@SOMA-no2gq Actually, I don't care for ballads at all. They totally bore me 99.9% of the time. I prefer mostly upbeat music, but not pop.
