I live about 2 miles from Paisley Park. When he died, you wouldn't believe the traffic and people coming to place memorials outside the studio. It went on for weeks. We lost a good man. After he passed it came out that he had been secretly giving money to local schools. Having been a fan of Prince for 40+ years, I have spent a lifetime trying to help my friends appreciate just how good he is. It's a bit too little, too late but it's good to know that now he is being given the respect that he earned while he was with us.

Hey guys! So many people are 'suddenly' into Prince after all these years. Many reasons I suppose, but glad he is so respected now. He was beyond talented and very anointed as he would tell of instruction he got in his dreams from another realm. To me, that explained his ability to be so innovative all the time. He always gave thanks too. Great review!

I was a young kid at that time in the 80s. I remember that the general opinion of Prince was that he was 'odd' in terms of his look and his overtly sexual lyrics and performances, and he was placed in the R&B genre, so it's not surprising that certain music fans would not be into him, especially those that were interested in another music genre (rock).. the reality is that Prince's music spanned multiple genres (pop, funk, r&b, rock, jazz).

I get you, as a long time fan myself. It's like, in happy the love he's getting now, slightly amazed actually, but a small part of me wishes they were here sooner. Although if being honest, even if he had ten times the fans then, it probably wouldn't have changed what he did or gave us. Just would have stopped me from answering so many "why do you like Prince so much" questions. Lol.

I can relate to being mainly only into heavy rock genre or rock as a teenager. Loved Cold Chisel, ACDC, Midnight Oil, Van Halen etc but I do rembember hearing the track Lets Go Crazy somehow and that was my first introduction to Prince but if I just went by the image alone I may have never listened to him. But somehow I got hold on the cassette of the Purple Rain and just could play the whole album through many times. The mix of funk, rock and pop music was just so different to the raw rock sounds I loved of my other favoutite bands. Then a number of years later saw the video of Sign of the Times and that highlighted he was so ahead of his time on how concerts should be. Its fun seeing anything of his old concert videos. He usually plays the live tracks much longer than the studio versions. You hear a short song like Computer Blue on Purple Rain and liked it but to hear it in concert you realise you had only heard the condensed version from the album for so many years and the longer version is like a gift that kee ps on giving.

I know it was recorded on a mobile truck hired out of the Record Plant in New York. The engineer was David "David Z" Rivkin (the brother of drummer Bobby Z) and he might respond to an enquiry of you reached out to him. Or maybe the record plant would recall what their mobile trucks in August 1983 would be fitted with.

Great Prince Songs That Were Hits for Other Artists.....Stevie Nicks, "Stand Back" (1983), The Time, "Jungle Love" (1984) Chaka Khan, "I Feel for You" (1984) this surprised me The Bangles, "Manic Monday" (1986)Art of Noise feat. Tom Jones, "Kiss" (1988) another surprise Sinead O'Connor, "Nothing Compares 2 U" (1990) Alicia Keys, "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore" (2001) and a few more but you get the idea to how great this man actually was.

I saw Prince in 1988 on his Love Sexy tour, and I was blown away... He played drums so the ladies (Shiela E and Cat) would get the spotlight... He let his horn section shine. It was by far the best concert I have ever seen. PERFECT SOUND!

Wow, absolutely amazing! I too took little notice of Prince in my youth, a little when he became Love Symbol, and then just started to appreciate him and he went and died! George & Alex, I always have to let out a sigh regarding Prince...just like both of you, I knew of Prince in the late '70's and early '80's and beyond, but even though I was on board that the man had enormous talent, etc., I wasn't listening to his recordings back then. For me, he was sort of like some of the rock 'n' roll icons of the 1950's or 1960's...heard music on the radio occasionally which was terrific, and eventually bought a greatest hits album or cd. Oh, well...

Hello! Thank you very much for that and I as well haven't seen this video in years. Believe me, you are not alone in finding out what a great artist he was. He was famous for having the "Written, Produced, Arranged, and Performed by Prince" (I forget the order) on the back of his albums. It would seem that a lot of musicians and those who teach guitar who are on KZbin are saying essentially what you have so wisely said. "Why didn't I know how good he was." Well Prince hated bootlegs and really disliked bootleg videos or even his music being played on KZbin. He famously sued the parent's of a toddler dancing to "Let's Go Crazy" on KZbin. I've been a fan for 35 years now and I remember buying bootlegged concerts on cassettes, VHS's, and later CD's for tons of money (what was a ton of money for me at that time). Now that he's gone it's a free for all and hundreds maybe thousands of videos are circulating on KZbin of most of his live performances dating back to the 70's. You can spend a couple of years of posting a new live performance by him daily. Way too long of a post, but gents thank you very much indeed. Warm wishes from Paris.

The man was a fantastic musician! Supreme guitar player, great vocalist and song writer. Same as The two of you except for certain songs would never go out of my way to listen to him. Also his physical presentation for what ever reason turned me off. Sitting her and listening to the song without a visual it even took you to another place.

Having been born in 50’s I was lucky enough to be around for the evolution of music which was sort of captured at Woodstock with Sha Na Na Joan Baez Jefferson airplane The Who arlo Guthrie Joplin so lucky enough to experience the evolution of music. Plus back then FM radio was amazing. So for me I was open to all music and focused on the genres that fit me and my taste. It was fun.

Why did he make the cuts? That verse just didn't work. The great thing about this is you can see Prince editing this in his mind. In that long intro he is just testing guitar sounds and levels, taking his time. The kiss for Wendy is the moment he knew he captured magic.

Prince should have kept The Revolution. They were a great band.

Nah, the band that followed were way more talented. The band between 1991-95 would smoke the Revolution. The band in 2001-2006 would smash the Revolution. The Revolution were well oiled doing what they did... Which was playing live what Prince could do in the studio alone. Bands after them actually had people on instruments who were as good as or better at their instrument than Prince. That allowed his level of song to increase. Levi Seacer, Miko, John Blackwell, Sonny T, Michael Bland... These were towering talents.

So not only did their musicianship rub off on each other, they also needed to be able to recreate past songs... Quite the requirement! I can only think of the workload of a band like 3rdeyegirl needing to learn 150 songs before going on tour.
