Radon removal systems are sometimes tied into sump pits. What happens when this method fails? How could it be noisy and potentially dangerous? Tune in to find out!

Very helpful knowing to look out for drains like that tied to the pit!

Just tested my radon for the first time in the 9 years since my house was built. 4 upstairs and 9 downstairs 😢 almost 10 years of breathing this crap and I had no idea! Fortunately, I have a HUGE and deep sump pit, but live in Colorado, and in an area that never floods. We even got torrential "flood" rains all last month (significantly more than usual) and still, not a single drop of water went into that pit haha. All that was to say I will definitely be installing my mitigation system using that sump pit. I know water will never be an issue (we dont even have pumps in the neighborhood).

Nice video. Was the radon level in the home retested after the radon fan and sump pump replacement?

Yes. It worked out. They didn't mind the loud fan and gurgling so the story ended there. Thanks for the comment.

Just bought a house, it came in at 10 for Radon. Currently i do not have a sump pump, but I do have the sump pit. You mention you have had decent luck with the pits working for the radon. Is there a special cover for the pit you would recommend for the radon pipes etc... or even a Radon kit you like best?

Hi Shane, Radon Away has clear covers that I like pretty well. You might just need a conventional system. Hard to say, especially not knowing how active the sump pit is. If you need a mitigator to look at it just go to www.nrsb.org. That's the National Radon Safety Board. Just plug in your zip code, and it'll being up a list of folks near you.

Nice video. We have a Sump Pump pit currently with no pump. Has a metal liner and some 4" corregated plastic pipe which I assume goes under the basement slab. Our levels range from 35 to 46 pci/l. After installing a RadonAway RP145c, we still have levels over 10! Professional Mitigation Folks said they can work on it and expect to pay $2000 or more and no guarantee they will get it down to under 2. Any suggestions?

Hi Scott, sorry I overlooked your question so long ago. I don't make guarantees either except that I will make my best effort. Drawing gas out from under a home that I had no part in building has so many X factors. A consumer is paying for the effort or procedure just like a surgery. A surgeon will not even guarantee that we will wake up! I would look at the testimonials of their customers and talk with them about worst case scenarios. I hope it has worked out for you by now.

I had dewatering system installed. They jack hammered while the fan was running. Probably not good, I realized later the fan was running when I went outside and saw dust coming out. What do you think I should do? The sump pump cover is off because they arent done yet, and now the system seems very loud compared to what it was. Will that change when the sump lid is put on?

Hi Zach, hopefully the dust issue worked itself out. The fan could be removed and rinsed out I suppose. I'm sure it's resolved by now because I 'm so far behind responding to folks. Take care. 😀

What if there is no p-trap in the drain that leads to the drain tile. Is is impossible to set up radon mitigation through the sump pump basin?
@radonman68003 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt. Yes, and I'm going to release a video on that shortly. In the meantime.. www.radonaway.com/products/sump-pumps-accessories.php Cool stuff! 😎 Thanks for watching!

How often do you come across situations like this where the intake to the fan is blocked by a rise of water in the sump pit? Is it usually a failed sump pump?
@radonman68008 ай бұрын
The best way I can answer that is: Not ALL radon systems are tied to sump pits, however, ALL sump pumps fail sooner or later. That's why the manometer is your buddy because it's a visual indicator for the system's air movement. Periodically testing the pump or having planned replacements every x years whether it needs it or not -(like what people often do with sewage pumps in their homes. ) Thanks for watching.

I moved into my house and got a radon test done. Long story short they installed a radon mitigation system connecting to my sump pump and sealing it. Since then I noticed a ton of water pouring into my sump pump pit. My pump would run every 1 to 3 min. Today I got curios if I could raise the float switch to try to balance out the water level or make it so it didn't run so often. The radon installers cut a 3" hole in the lid and silicone a clear plexiglass piece over it. I removed that cover to watch the float switch. 5 min went by and still it wouldn't pump. Eventually by shear luck I noticed that as that hole got smaller water started running fast into the pump. I then covered the hole again and the water was gushing in.. then lifted it up and the water stopped. It's now been 20 min and my pump hasn't ran, Why is the radon system sucking water into my sump pump pit? When I remove this little sight glass the u shaped device showing suction still shows a negative suction. Is this OK to leave it like this? With the cover off? I don't want my pumps running so often especially if it's not needed. Any advice would be appreciated. I have since resealed the hole as it was installed until I know more.

Hi Aequitas Saints, A typical radon system produces about 1 gallon of condensation every day. That right there is a source for a bit of excess water in your sump pit. That shouldn't make your pump run so often though. Having said that, I would have a pro come out if your pump is constantly running all the time. Pumps fail and back ups are sometimes needed. You want to be in front of that for sure. Thanks for watching.
