I am no longer the same man I was then either, Marcos. Coming home after I buried my guns in Guatemala was anticlimatic. Taking off the mask and just trying to be myself was too easy. I still do my homework and I keep track of the EZLN. We were a very small army, but a very good one. I still believe that force of arms will never bring anyone true peace. I could not in good conscience lead you all into a fight we could not win. Today... the most I can do is try to teach you all how to live well, and how to die with dignity and grace. The most you can do is to be yourself and do your best. Try to be a joy and comfort to those that need you most. Your family and friends... those like myself who are and always will be strangers in a strange land. Those of you that remember me as a lone wanderer and soldier, I salute you. Know that the people of Chiapas will live forever in my heart and my mind. I owe you all my life. A debt I just do not know how to repay. Thank you, Marcos. A 12 días del alzamiento del EZLN en Chiapas, y ante la presión de la opinión pública nacional e internacional, el gobierno de Carlos Salinas de Gortari declaró el cese al fuego. Cuatro días después anunció que su gobierno enviaría una iniciativa de ley al Congreso para otorgar una “amnistía general” en favor de “todos los participantes en los hechos de violencia que afectaron varios municipios del estado de Chiapas, entre el 1 de enero de 1994 hasta las 11 horas del 16 de enero”. “Con esta decisión, el Estado mexicano deja en claro que busca la paz y que quienes han entrado en confrontación con él no tienen ya pretexto alguno para no reintegrarse pacíficamente a sus comunidades”, dijo Salinas de Gortari en un mensaje. En respuesta, el subcomandante Marcos emitió el 18 de enero (publicado en la prensa el 21 de enero) un comunicado titulado “¿De qué nos van a perdonar?”, en el que cuestiona: “¿De qué tenemos que pedir perdón? ¿De no morirnos de hambre? ¿De no callarnos en nuestra miseria? ¿De no haber aceptado humildemente la gigantesca carga histórica de desprecio y abandono?…. ¿Quién tiene que pedir perdón y quién puede otorgarlo?”, dice.
