***** I know I should maybe make this a separate thread and not jump into the middle of someone else', but I kinda wanted to maximize my chances of you reading this personally. I hope you'll bear with me a while here, 'cos this might just get a tad long-winded, although I won't blame you if you decide to TL;DR. My first RPG love was Suikoden. Let that sink in for a second. I was too young to have run into any of its spiritual predecessors on the Super Nintendo, so the sprites didn't bother me and nor did anything else, as far as I was concerned here was a game doing something possibly entirely unique and I fell head over heels for it, I really did. The deluge of characters, the runes, the mythic stuff, (even if I didn't know it was mythic or possibly even what mythic meant at the time) I ate it all up ravenously. Even when it consistently beat the everloving crap out of me in the late-mid game and story progress stopped dead I still came back to the front of the queue like Oliver Twist and asked for more. Then I lost access to it, and like the stupid kid I was at the time (and I'm not claiming not to be a stupid *adult*, just in exciting new ways) I didn't think to look for more of the same elsewhere, the idea that I could possibly do so simply didn't occur to me. I mourned the fair maiden I'd loved and lost and moved on, like you do. Fast-forward maybe five years, and the same guy who introduced me to Suikoden reappeared briefly and basically said "Hey kid, remember that game I lent you? You loved that, if I remember right. Try *this*". And then he dumped an unwanted duplicate copy of Breath of Fire 3 on my lap. Mine to keep and do with what I willed. I speak with no hyperbole whatsoever when I say that I left my room exclusively in order to eat and use the bathroom for in excess of a week, if Suikoden was analogous to the sort of heady but ultimately simple crush who first looks back at you with a nervous smile and invites you home for dinner then BoF3 was the one you meet in college; the one that makes you shove aside all else just to watch a crappy tv show with them when you really should be studying and then maybe go to that party one of their friend's friend's friends is having where you meet all the other people you're going to spend the next few years making your whole world and will remember 'til you die, even if none of you stay in contact any more these days. Teepo, Nina, Garr... even those horse dudes whose names I've forgotten, I can still see them on the inside of my eyelids years later, bobbing in combat stance and waiting for commands to either enact or react to. The world, the mythos, the balls to the walls gene-splicing system mentioned in the video; it's all still here (if more than a little faded from distance, I've got a shitty memory for details even of things I love a lot of the time) and I kick myself to this day for losing track of my copy. I miss everything about it. Yes, even the fairies. Uhm, in short I'm picking up what you're putting down here, Razorfist. Thanks for sharing and damn well *ensuring* I'm going to find it again along with the other three you recommend, however much it costs. Happy 100 and excuse me while I duck into your back catalogue to watch the other 99! Also, sorry for running my mouth like that, I knew this was going to go on a while but I never imagined quite how long. Whoops.

@ZerogunRivale9 жыл бұрын
PlayerEssence He accuses the game of not having much customization. While on the surface level that's true, I think Chrono Trigger replaces it with the single most robust party system in any RPG I have played. Many games allow you to change party members, but it's often time meaningless (i'm looking at you, FF7). But in Chrono Trigger, just changing one party members changed the way you played the game. Having a certain trio meant you relied on triple techs, but just replacing one changed up your available attacks and the way you played. Certain party setups meant dependence on single attacks, others meant relying on double techs, so on and so forth. The fact that they could take something as simple as changing a party member meant rethinking your entire strategy due to its deep tech/combo system is the core of Chrono Trigger for me.
@sepertarift9 жыл бұрын
PlayerEssence I loved Chrono Trigger too, but he's got enough points to bury the hatchet! BOF came first and did it better!

Seperta Zen There is also a lot of stuff that Chrono Trigger does that BOF didn't do. The games aren't alike at all

The way I see it, everyone has that one jrpg franchise other than Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest that they readily identify their love for whether it be Wild Arms, Grandia, Lunar, Shadow Hearts, Lufia, Persona, Phantasy Star, Skies of Arcadia etc. For Razorfist, it's Breath of Fire with an honerable mention going to Phantasy Star (as far as what he has revealed). For me, it's Suikoden with honerable mentions going to Anachronox, Evolution, and Star Ocean.

This is the video that convinced me to hunt down a copy of the first two games, so that I could play them on my SNES. The first one was easy enough to get a hold of, since it’s one of the more common RPGs for the system, but then there was the second game. For whatever reason, the second one is so goddam hard to find, that I actually saw multiple copies of Little Samson on NES before finding one copy BoF2. I finally ended up getting a copy for my birthday, just two days ago, and that specific cartridge was found at a game store more than 5 hours away from where I live. All that said, both of them are pretty good, definitely among the best RPGs on the console.

Yeah, I'll agree BoF3 does feel like the end of the series. When I picked it up as a teen I loved the hell out of it, it was a great RPG adventure. Then 4 came out and something was just off about the game overall. It was an alright game, but it just didn't capture my imagination the same way 3 did. As for anything after 4 they don't exist to me.
@SonofTiamat9 жыл бұрын
MarsGundam I also loved 3 but didn't play 4. It's funny how 4 looks more dated though with it's use of more 3D while 3's sprites have aged much better.
@SaitohYatate8 жыл бұрын
+MarsGundam The fourth BoF had these huge philosophical/existentialist undertones that ended up forcing the plot to make little sense, especially towards the end. While not a bad game, BoF 4 was kind of an unnecessary sequel that just felt mediocre compared to 3 (which ended with a positive enough note to not let any sequels go by).

Dragon Quarter was actually my first look into the series and I did actually enjoy it cause of how different it was from most JRPGs. However, the whole "counter going up with each step" was the straw that can break the back of even a sturdy camel. Even if it was thematically appropriate, its seemed to be more of a way to limit exploration, probably cause they didnt make the areas all that big...though they were interesting areas. Also, goggles aside, I wouldnt really say that it was steampunk. More like general dystopian future. They had computers and robot running on electricity, as well as cloning and bio-engineering.

Honest to God, I could see this game getting a 3D remake while keeping a good 95% of everything in the first two games and no bad mechanics from the Playstation games, but I got only two groups that could do the 2D art made for modelling: Studio Gaga, or Kazushi Hagiwara. Why? Because Gaga was trained by Kentaro Miura, a man who could make metal-looking protagonists and some terrifying monsters in the Action-Horror Dark Fantasy Berserk. And Hagiwara is a Fantasy loving fan of 80's Metal, known for malong the Heavy Metal Dark Fantasy known simply as BASTARD!! Abd as a weeb myself, there is also one big bonus to choosing either: save for Puck, NO GODDAMN CHIBI SHIT!!!

Pretty accurate but one little thing about Breath of Fire 4, while the gameplay was a giant leap back it delivered in 1 way that none of the others did......story. We get a story that isn't afraid to shock and go into harsh themes, showcase the darkest sides of humanity, ambition and we have Fou-lu who I am not sure if I can even properly call the villain because just look at his story! It really is a shame that the game feels slightly unfinished storywise....because what we got was so damn good.

By the time news of Breath of Fire 4 made it to my ears, I didn't own any consoles anymore, only a PC. BOF4 came out for the PC, which is why I even heard of it at the time, so I had the pleasure of playing it. At a time when I was beyond disappointed with the Final Fantasies, and expecting nothing from it, BOF4 swept the rug from under my feet. My whole point here is that for someone who never touched any of the earlier games in the franchise because they seemed uninteresting, when amateurishly compared to Chrono Trigger and the Fantasies, the fact that BOF4 found a permanent place in my memories and nostalgic reminiscing is a testament of the brilliance this series possesses. Even if said greatness was already fading by then.

One, two, and three I would recommend to anyone who want's to play a good old school RPG, but number four is when they started to experiment, and it just started to go wrong. Thanks for 100 episodes of eloquent, intellectual, and entertaining reviews and commentary, Razorfist. God speed, bro.

First time finding a Razorfist video. Not only did it introduce me to a bitchin' channel, but it gives plenty of love to BoF2, one of my favorite RPGs of all time. It's part of the triforce of kickass that made me fall in love with the Genre, including Mario RPG and Secret of Mana. Thanks for giving some praise to a series that doesn't get as much love as it deserves.

Breath Of Fire is definitely one of the best JRPG franchises. If only Capcom had more faith in the series and didn't fuck it up. They need to make a real sequel preferably for consoles but I'll settle for 3DS. Congratulations on 100 episodes, Razorfist. You are hands down one of my favourite KZbinrs. You deserve a hell of a lot more subs than you already have. Here's to many more great episodes. God fucking speed!

***** And on the topic of JRPG franchises, I wonder how you're getting along with the Fire Emblem series so far? You did tout Sacred Stones as a living, breathing, caricature bedecked masterpiece that also excelled at its requiring the player to strategise, after all. I hope you weren't thrown off by the Permadeath feature, though.

Breath of Fire 3 is my favorite rpg of all time. I bought a ps1 because I played FF7 on a friend's ps1. I only had money for 2 games (from overseas so could only afford a few games per year) and so I bought BoF3 and FF7 and I didn't touch FF7 till beating BoF3 twice. Such an amazing game and franchise. I managed to became a "Dragon Quarter" in the 5th game just because of love for the series. I hope they make a part 6

100th episode and it's Breath of Fire too fucking sweet. I remember when this dude's first account got tampered with and vanished from YT. Good to see him keeping on.

My first RPG was BoF2 and I instantly fell in love with the series and genre from the opening crawl. Sadly the only game in the series I haven't played is 3, mainly because I cant find my copy of the game sense moving. Anyway congrats on your hundredth episode razorfist, heres hoping for a hundred more!

Hells yes!! I am among the few true BOF veterans and I felt similar feelings regarding DQ... Fuck, Dragon Quarter was the reason I got a PS2 to begin with!! I remember DragonTear.net and a host of other sites where we could talk about this masterpiece of a game series. BF2 was my first RPG and I recently picked up the re-translated version... It was exquisite! If you want the rom, just shoot me a reply. Who was your favorite character out of all of them? Mine was Katt Chuan! Redhead, smoking hot and the best fighter in the game! Thanks for doing this retrospective and I Happy 100th episode, Razor! You're a Titan.

I decided to check your list and I saw this. Man this game takes me back. This was probably my 2nd RPG I got into after FF and man, I loved this little short-lived franchise. But yeah, those encounter rates were a pain, especially in BOF2. I would just brave them and never run. It didn't work. I would run back in and out of the infinity dungeon like 4 times saving my process. But BOF2 was my favorite. I mean people were dropping like flies. Oh the flame wars in the GF community about the old designs vs the ones in 4. Come to find out it was the same guy. Oh how I miss those days. That was the fun part of gaming.

Hell yes! My first taste of Breath of Fire (and unfortunately for the moment my last) was Breath of Fire 2, and I agree %100. That tune, the one which builds to a crescendo and explodes into melody still gives me shivers to this day, as does that vague reference to an underworld filled with gargantuan, almost endless towers.
