I'm glad to see this great game getting more of the attention it deserves. The expansions are excellent and do add to the game, but, if you can't afford to buy one or both, the base game itself is worth picking up. Maybe a Dice Tower play through would help some folks decide. Thanks for the review

My favorite thing about this expansion are the extra raiding spots, along with earning fame for exceeding the maximum military strength. The Jarls do add to the theme, but they can throw a wrench in your plans sometimes. Love the Mead Hall expansion! This is still my favorite worker placement game of all time!!! What about the new dices? I think they are awesome because one of the problems in the base game is that when you get into late game it all becomes so easy to raid everything, because your crew is so much strong. I think the dices mitigate that problem.

For the Dutch version, both fields of fame and hall of heroes are actually combined into one big expansion that you can buy :D

Once you have the expansion can you play the base game with 5 players? Or do you have to include the expansion?

I really want to get this game, but is seems too simple Like the raiding mechanics are so underwhelming. Am I wrong? I'm considering getting this or Architects as they are both beautiful looking, but Architects seems a little more challenging. Help!

If you want to get one game then get Architects because the base game has more complexity, but RotNS with its expansions is better than Architects, albeit more expensive. Depends if you want to be a Viking and raid, or if you want to operate a city in architects.

This makes no sense from logical point of view. You gather your crew, strengthen weapons, armor etc. to ride an outpost to get some sweet loot, and you meet jarl there who you have to run from or kill? Srsly, this is just stupid ;)

Maybe these are the previous vikings that raided the outposts and harbors and the Jarls are the leaders
