For anyone who was confused as how it's shiny can know Aura Sphere but not it's normal, It is because Raikou was an event distribution for HeartGold/SoulSilver in 2011, where the trio were given some exclusive moves, Raikou got Aura Sphere, Entei got Flare Blitz, and Suicune got Sheer Cold. The reason for their existence was to unlock Zoroark when sent to Black and White. They were also Level 30...

Think it and suicune always being first in dynamax raid reveals a potential connection shiny legendary beasts have to Calyrex possibly as nobility. On console you'd see that the Raikou would be in a Cherish Ball however, so even if it was a shiny you'd be able to tell that way. I really think Showdown should implement this, since looking at pokeballs is an extra form of customising and can influence your decision making (notably, I believe at the 2014 VGC championships some Ttar were running Ice Punch and they had to have Cherish Ball since only an event Ttar could run that move in the format).

That's not a very good tip because you can still tell if the Raikou you are using in Gen 4-7 is the Movie 13 event or not simply by seeing what Pokeball it came out of. Simply put even if you get Shiny Raikou in any of the games, it will never be in a Cherish Ball, thus it can't be the event Raikou with Aura Sphere. Meanwhile Gen 8 changed that with the Aura Sphere TM.

It's not implemented on Showdown, but yeah, on cartridge in those gens, there's no benefit to using a shiny Raikou that's not from the event, unless you're banking on your opponent not being observant enough to notice the Cherish Ball (or lack thereof)

Especially considering stuff like Wish Salamence exists which I didn't know about cause it was an extremely rare Japanese exclusive event. It's a shame some of these were never released later. The most obvious sign moreso than being shiny is being in a Cherish Ball. Your Raikou can be shiny, but if it's not in a Cherish Ball you know automatically that it doesn't carry Aura Sphere. Unfortunately, Pokemon Showdown currently doesn't have ball restrictions yet, but on cartridge where the type of ball DOES appear when the Pokemon gets sent out it's more of a dead giveaway than a shiny coloration. It seems like such an easy implementation, but it still baffles me as to why Showdown doesn't have it.

@@yeet8036 There is literally a point to have that. This optimization from the video only occurs on a NON-ACCURATE battle simulator. The event raikou was only given out in a cherish ball and its only nature is Rash. Therefore, the only way to do a cartrige accurate bluff is to have a Rash Raikou, which means losing out on bulk. On a cartrige, you cannot bluff aura sphere if your Raikou does not have rash nature even if it is shiny. But on this battle simulator, you can, which is very inaccurate.

For example, in earlier gens if you see a Jirachi in a Cherish Ball you know that it has the possibility of knowing Heart Stamp, but also impossible to know the move Body Slam. A shiny Jirachi in a Cherish Ball can learn Moonblast but not Heart Stamp or Body Slam, and a regular or shiny Jirachi in a Poke Ball can know Body Slam but no Heart Stamp or Moonblast. You can argue that it's just as important as shinyness in terms of easing predictions and mind games.

As someone who plays exclusively on cart, and even owns the event Raikou in question, this was the very first thing that I thought of. I can't bluff an event Raikou in-game because the animation for sending it out is different to a regular one. Granted, it's something you have to pay attention to when it's sent out, and isn't nearly as obvious as the Pokémon being visually shiny, although I wouldn't consider this too relevant given the fact that Showdown typically displays all information from the match in literal list-format, so it already simulates the game in a way that requires less active attention than the original experience. This is one of the main reasons that I look at Showdown as a decent and accessible simulation of the game, but by no means a full 1-to-1 mapping of the original experience.

I think Pokémon showdown should implement different pokeball types for cart accuracy in situations such as this. You shouldn’t be able to disguise your raikou as an aura sphere one unless it uses a cherish ball (and thus must have a rash nature).

Showdown also allows impossible spreads on legendary pokemon in gen 3/4 (even gen 5/6 if you have moves on it that can only be learned in gen 3/4 like defog Hasty 6IV Latias) but have never implemented a check to only allow cartridge accessible spreads. It's annoying that they are not 100% accurate (they can be) on this because of the off-chance it can create a small optimization that ONLY exists on showdown; this shiny Raikou optimization only exists on showdown. An old pokemon battle simulator actually implemented only allowing legal spreads on certain pokemon before it stopped running, I don't recall what it was called though.

If showdown were more accurate, a shiny Raikou would NOT be more optimal. This is because in REAL gen 4 Wifi battles, the ball type is show to the opposing trainer when the pokemon comes out. The only Raikous that learn Aura Sphere come in a cherish ball (along with being shiny and having a rash nature). If it could have any nature, shiny Raikou would be optimal for all Raikou sets. But since most Raikou aren't mixed, this is less optimal. So shiny Raikou IN A CHERISH BALL is only optimal to bluff Aura Sphere IF you are running a set with a rash nature (mixed set). I don't understand why the pokeball type is not implemented in showdown like it is in real games.

I honestly hate that there's smogon restrictions on shiny legendaries based on events. I think im in the minority camp where I dont think it needs to be a perfect 1 to 1 recreation of the cartridge. Maybe if they had done it from the get go but as this point smogon is kinda its own thing. Think about all the popular hacked formats. This situation is only the case because Showdown doesn't have a system for displaying the ball that a Pokémon is caught in. If you're playing on cart, then the event Raikou will always be in a Cherish Ball, and that fact is visible on the animation that plays when the Pokémon is sent out. If you want to run a different nature on Raikou, then you have to catch it in a different ball even if it's shiny, so in reality this Aura Sphere bluff doesn't actually apply in the original game.

In case you don't know, in gen 8, all three legendary dogs can learn extreme speed via level up and Raikou can learn Zap Cannon via level up (Zap Cannon was also a TM in gen 2) and Aura Sphere and Weather Ball via TR. The only moves that remain exclusive to these events are Crush Claw and Howl on Entei and Aqua Ring on Suicune. Your Raikou no longer needs to be Shiny

Another similar example is that in Gen 7 OU, you always want your Greninja to be both not shiny and male, because Ash-Greninja is locked to be male and non shiny. Thus, running a shiny or female Greninja is a dead giveaway that you are running Protean Greninja rather than Ash-Greninja.
