Worked on one of the Track Gangs in and around Tupper Lake for a couple years just prior to the1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. Did a lot of grade crossing signal work also. We did everything by hand, remove and replace ties by hand, drove spikes with a spike maul. Was young, worked hard, got strong. We had an open air speeder that we would drive down to Lake Lila and work in that area on a lot of crisp days...

How do they turn the cars? Is there some sort of infrastructure? Tools? Some of the cars look light enough that it seems like a bunch of guys could just shove it around. Guessing that is not an option, though.

I can’t explain the technical aspects but they just swivel while still on the tracks. I’ve been on a few speeder trips.

Beautiful Bridge nice guys and probably was a comfortable temperature under favorable Skies. Did this once 30 years ago on the Escanaba and Lake Superior and on rough track it's a Rough Rider for the butt and is not made for four legged friends. Glad you were able to follow it as it is a unique scene

Black fly season in the Adirondacks is usually from mid May until early July.

@2:45-2:49 I certainly hope that the operator of that speeder trailing behind the blue one is not demonstrating how they go about driving on the motorways in their standard automobile - looks like they're just begging for a brake check. 🙄🤔

I got to meet many of these riders a few years ago in Thendara. That was where they dropped the speeders onto the tracks. Nice group of rail enthusiast’s.
