Scenic Deschutes River Canyon & more (4K) | BNSF Oregon Trunk Sub | June 10, 2023

Welcome to another Railfan Dan production! This is my first time ever doing voiceover in one of my videos. It might also be the only one due to how much longer it took to edit the video. Time will tell.
Back on the Oregon Trunk Subdivision, one of my favorite lines! It starts out along the Columbia River but quickly moves into the Deschutes River Canyon where most of the video takes place.
Just a pair of BNSF freight trains in this video but caught at multiple locations gives the video a bit of length to it. Enjoy and feel free to share!

You have chosen one of the most isolated and rugged canyons of Oregon to share. The drone photos are magnificent. The last minute shows a large green patch on the West Bank of the canyon known as Oak Springs, and just north of that is the confluence of the White River into the Deschutes. This is a highly historical line from a railroad fan’s perspective, with competing lines (Hill & Harriman) going up opposite sides of the river to get to California first… some brief inclusion of that might have been good, but your approach of “less said” was great given the fantastic perspective a drone gives. This being an old SP&S line adds to the unique history of “The Trunk” all the way to Bend. Great job…. A lot of work to put it together. Thanks!

Well, Dan, you do have a good "announcer's voice" and the voice-over was informative and not over-done.🙂 Having said that, me thinks that the text boxes are essential to those of us who are not familiar with placenames etc. (it really helps to see the spelling so that one can follow along on a map). I was glad that you didn't cut out your signature music.❤ Yeah, with the speeding up of time, it's essential to make the most of every hour - I've had to skip over a lot of videos and other activities, daily, lately (but, never your videos) so, I get it about re-thinking the extra time it takes to do voice-overs.🤔 Love that Deschutes! Another great video, Dan! It's nice to wake up in the morning and take a drone's-eye tour of beautiful scenery and trains. Regarding narration, I like the info you provide. First of all the scenery of this train ride was absolutely beautiful and amazing. Second your voice overs were great. Voicing adds a great dimension to your presentation. It makes me want to go back and see more of your work. Keep it up. Be a leader in both stunning views and great camera work. I think this will be productive for you. There are many people doing rail fanning but very few people are doing productive voiceover work. Could you credit your music on your videos because it is very integral to your work. And I liked listening to it. Thank so much.

The trains and the scenery on the BNSF Oregon Truck Subdivision in the Deschutes River Canyon are magnificent, Dan! I enjoyed your narrative. It is much better than trying to do a quick read of the comments that flash at various places on the screen. I know that adding voice over comments adds to the time in posting a video. You must put together a script based on what we see in the video at a given moment. You cannot voice over by ad-libbing on the fly. I would like to have more voice over in your videos, but I am not the person who has to edit and do the voice over narration. You might want to consider doing voice overs on videos that deserve a voice over based on the content of the train(s) or the locations in each video.

I have always wondered whether or not my texts are even being read since it takes extra effort to keep moving your eyes up there when they appear. This video seems to be performing much better than normal so I'm still considering making it a normal thing.

like the narration!!!!! I know it takes tons of time but because i am not from the area any interesting factual information about the industries or the towns along the way would be fantasticf!!!! You have the best videos around and more interesting facts would put you way over the top!!!! Your camera work is incredible!!! ie... this part of the river has had gold found in it... the sally's restaurant in x town was fantastic! Be sure to buy gas in... x town because no statons for a 100 miles... I really like the train line info... as in pasco to stockton.... or x to fresno... THANKS!!!!

Great vid. We were in Maupin recently checking out the old wagon trails up the river. Theres a book about the original construction of the rail lines up both sides of the river ”Deschutes Railroad Wars” And yeah that gate on the East grade.. According to the locals, Bill Gates and a group of other tycoons bought up the land from that gate south and have built a bunch of self contained survival compounds. Albeit very large and luxurious. Then they gated off the road. Oh well. Great video. Thanks!

The narration is okay if it's done occasionally. It's not that you're bad at it, you actually have a pleasant voice, it's just that I love the way you add music to your videos. It's quite relaxing and the narration kills the mood.

I agree with the few that the voice over distracts from getting lost in the scenery and the view of consist slowly moving by accompanied by an excellent music selection. Maybe you could have another version of the same video without the voice work?

Thanks for your feedback! It will just be one or the other. I think even KZbin would flag a video that was double uploaded. They don't like that and see it as someone just trying to get more views in a cheating way.

It's so weird hearing your voice on KZbin vs in person! 😳🤣🤣😂 As I was reading the messages below I found myself agreeing with many of the thoughts regarding the talking vs reader boards and how it cold be a lot better in the long run to have it in vs not. I personally like the add-on in my opinion, and think you should keep it :-) Finally, is it possible you could do a chase with a train from the south end of the sub and chase it up to at least the Crooked River/P. S. Ogden state park so people can see the trestles, views, and canyon? It would be amazingly awesome if you were able to get an angle of the train from level or even lower (looking up at it) from while it passes over the river, then explore the river itself for debris and artifacts from days gone by. Anyway, keep up the good work, as always!

I have some previous videos with shots at Crooked River but I just didn't make it that far South on the line this day. It's a great spot!

Good video and description. May I suggest adding a little background, for instance, the line is known as the "Inside Gateway," and (please don't beat me up too bad) use the term "consist" instead of "lash-up'" to describe the locomotives. It is akin to calling a rail a long piece of metal.

What I really enjoy about your videos is the wonderful videography with the relaxing music in the background. I'm voting no on the voiceover. It distracts from getting lost in the scenery and trains. Hello Dan, thank you for the spectacular and wonderful video, as always! Regarding the voiceover: I liked the additional information! Being a foreigner I am often wondering how to pronounce the names of the towns - now I know :) . Your voice as such is very clear and pleasant to listen to, but please be careful about the volume of the background music. You did it almost perfect, but - being a non-native English speaker (or listener, for that matter) - I had a hard time to understand what you said around 4:57 (they seem to be rolling through a ??? here) as the music was rather dynamic at this point in time. Maybe you can tune down the background music a bit for longer or more complex explanations. Many audio editing software can even lower the background music volume automatically when you are speaking - but this feature needs to be used wisely, not to make the volume feel like a roller coaster ride. But this is really only a minor issue! At the end of the video you said that this voiceover recording is very time intensive ... still I would like to encourage you to produce more of such videos, as I liked the voiceover very much, but not at the price of producing less videos in total - then better switch back to the traditional style. Thanks again!

If we take that example: once I know that the term is "slow order" I think it is self-explanatory enough and Google/Wikipedia can give all the details, so I would not need a longer explanation in your voiceover. But, based on high school and college English I was not able to guess what this could mean, based on what I was listening to, including the music. If you could pay some extra attention that these special "railroad words", as well as town/river/place names, are particularly clear to understand, I would appreciate that. But as I already said in my previous posting, this comment is about making something very close to perfect even better, so no worries! Thanks again!

There is private property beyond the gate but I'm unsure how it works. It's a BLM access road so I didn't think it could be gated. I'm not sure the specifics.

Scenery fantastic. Not bad for your first narration. Music was very repetitious and a little loud when you were speaking. More references to train speed, etc. needed.Engine dounds needed. Some men even put in fake sounds. It works great. More references to trackside stuff. Pretend that you're speaking to one person. You'd be surprised at how much better it sounds. Many broadcasters can't do it. I spent my life speaking, by the way. July 24, 2023, St. Joseph, MO, USA.

Thanks for the feedback! I didn't have the most ideal microphone at all which made it quite difficult to get the levels right. That will be a thing of the past for the next video.

Dan, you did a good job on the narrative. But given a choice, if I could turn off the narrative, I would. Explanation: If an artist had to include a narrative for his painting, IMO it would take away the mystic of his artistry.

Narration is good - you can get more information across than just text captions. Who locked the gate south of Maupin? Strange the BLM would block public access on public land like that. Or is it some uptight local property owner who thinks it's their exclusive use road?

Thanks Scott and that is a bonus. It is much easier to get more info across in a quicker timeframe. I'm still not sure exactly about the locked gate but from what I can find is that it's actually owned by the Deschutes Club along with the rest of the road South of that location. They give the BLM access past the gate but not general public except for walking. They don't even allow bikes past it I guess.
