The shortest rail connection between two European capitals (54 kilometers, Vienna AT - Bratislava SK) will feature continuous overhead power supply from December 2024. The system break point (15 kV / 25 kV) is planned on the Marchegger Bridge at 52:25 (border AT / SK 52:38). In Austria, the 38-kilometer stretch from Vienna Stadlau to the Austrian-Slovak border in Marchegg has been electrified (15 kV), along with the upgrade to a double-track line with a maximum speed of 200 km/h up to Marchegg station. In Slovakia, the Marcheggský viadukt will be upgraded, maintaining its bottleneck status, with the maximum speed increasing from 70 km/h to 120 km/h. By 2024, the 3 kilometers up to Devínska Nová Ves will be electrified (25 kV), but will remain single-track. The 13 kilometers from Devínska Nová Ves to Bratislava hlavná stanica are already electrified and double-tracked.

In Slovakia, the construction site was set up in March 2024, initially planned for completion in December 2024. However, the construction phase has been extended, and is now projected to conclude in June 2025. The Marcheggský viaduct is currently undergoing an update, which will enable a speed limit increase from 70 km/h to 120 km/h. By the middle of 2025, the 2.8 kilometer stretch towards Devínska Nová Ves remains shut for reconstruction and electrification (using 25 kV), but will continue to be a single-track.

Children of our politicians cannot get any valuable occupation (yes, social justice studies), so their excommie daddies came out with this institute. They are deciding, weither project will be done in Slovakia. As You see the Austrians, they are working and spending the taxpayers money for a reasonable thing, but in Slovakia, You can clearly see ... nothing. A nettlerash all around, weed in the tracks, not a single civil engineering work between Marchegg and Devínska Nová Ves on the Slovakian side. It is a shame. The Austrians wanted to go electric from Decembet 2023 by "railjet" between Salzburg, Vienna and Bratislava via Marchegg. I have doubts, because there is not a project and neither any application for a civil engineering structure at the country development offices. They even do not know, what money use for it, if...

@@RailRelaxation not quite, the second track between Wien Aspern Nord and the border is still under construction, and electrification still ends in Marchegg (so trains to Bratislava need a diesel engine, basically only for the ~3km between Marchegg and Devinska Nova Ves). But the track you ride on in the video is mostly already the new one, which was already built for a future increase of the line speed to 200km/h and above. This also includes the replacement of all level crossings by road bridges or underpasses, the installation of ETCS train control and even smaller details like eg. continuous movable point turnouts in the main tracks. The current plan is to get the work completed until 2025, including electrification on the Slovakian side. Then the only bottleneck on the line will be the missing second bridge over the Morava, which wasn't rebuilt after WW2.

I used to study in Wiener Neustadt south of Vienna in 2014/15. The atmosphere between West crossing into East still hasn't changed. There is a train from Wiener Neustadt to Sopron in Hungary that still has Austrian border guards checking the train at the border. The train south from Villach into Slovenia has the same vibe. Great video really brings back memories I was on this line a few times and it's a crazy feeling crossing the river into Slovakia even still.

Unlike what happens in Italy and Switzerland (lines with ETCS Level 2 aside), in Austria the dwarf signals, i.e. the signals normally used for maneuvers in the station, are passed in the closed position by trains. Question: Is there a technical reason for this? Thanks again for the answer

Interesting that Austria is almost finished double tracking and electrifying this route from Vienna to the Slovak border. Unfortunately, for the Bratislava trains they will still have to be diesel as there in not evidence of the Slovaks installing the infrastructure from the border to where the line joins the electrified rail from Brecslav. I guess the means the OEBB trains to Marchegg will be electric but the trains to Bratislava remain diesel. Odd Fact: Before the widening project the stretch of track from shortly after Hirschstetten to immediately before Marchegg was the longest stretch of straight rail in the entire country. I would assume the widening hasn't altered that.

@filwoj6120 - BTW, it's a signal imitator (current regulations in force by BGBl II 156/2014 EisbBBV § 35 "Signalnachahmer"). The signal term of the main signal 15:12 has been announced to the driver. The main signal shows freely with a speed limit (a diagonal line to the bottom right of a vertical line) of 60 kph.
@filwoj6120
@filwoj6120 2 жыл бұрын
@@heinerle456 thanks for your explanation, i have studied it little bit more, and there are 3 states of this kind of signal: vertical one part is always present, the second one can be diagonal to de right bottom and it's as you said - free to go with speed limit of 40 (sometimes 60)kph, diagonal to the top right - ride allowed with full speed or third case - when the second dash is horizonal, then signal says STOP. If anybody would like to know, but was afraid to ask ;)
@Colki12
@Colki12 2 жыл бұрын
@@filwoj6120 The german (well, austrian) names of this signal are: Signalnachahmer + Hauptsignal zeigt Frei / Hauptsignal zeigt Halt / Hauptsignal zeigt Frei mit Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung The imitator is used if the driver or the train attendant do not have a clear view of the next main signal. However train attendants often get a bonus signal if thats the case which is called "Zustimmung" (approval). Thats the small white "Z" on the platforms. If its not glowing than the next main signal is either "Halt" (stop) or "Fahrverbot" (no driving on this track; this signal is used with protection signals)
@stephanweinberger
@stephanweinberger Жыл бұрын
@@heinerle456 I think a better English term would be "signal repeater", as it basically repeats the information shown on the preceding distant signal. (E.g. in the German signal system they have exactly the same shape as a distant signal, just with an additional indicator light to mark it as a repeater. The Austrian system opted for a completely different shape instead, but is serves the same purpose.) @filwoj6120 Repeaters are used to expedite traffic in situations where visibility on the main signal is limited (eg. by curves, tunnels, bridges, or platform roofs) and/or there is a stop between distant signal and main signal. They are not safety critical (as a "stop" aspect was already announced at the distant signal), but can speed up things if the main signal has changed to "clear" in the meantime, to let the driver know that he can stop braking even before he can actually see the main signal. That's especially important for heavy freight trains, which can save a lot of energy if they don't need to come to a full stop.

Great video. You cannot imagine how your videos have increased my knowledge and understanding of the geography of central Europe. For instance, I had no idea that Austria from Vienna to the border with the Slovak Republic is so flat. I was quite surprised by the long stretches of tangent track. One thing I found curious was that apparently the train is electrically powered from Vienna to the Slovak border. From there to just before Devinska Nova Ves there is no overhead wire. Was a diesel locomotive added at the border? It piqued my curiosity. Anyway, thanks again for another fascinating and instructive video.

@ericthefenderfan8056 you are very welcome. I am glad that you increased your knowledge of geography in that part of Europe. The locomotive was diesel, all the way. There is no electrification on the second part of that journey. They are working on it and I believe that in the near future the line will be electrified all the way.
@RazielKainus
@RazielKainus 2 жыл бұрын
@@RailRelaxation as of right now, the electrification is mostly done up to Marchegg, with many elements done towards the border (they are progressively adding wires, poles, signals etc)... I am pretty sure that before the year is done, Austrian portion will be done (maybe except the expansion to two track at some parts)... as for Slovak part... they have like 2,5km of track to electrify, make some repairs on the bridge (to allow higher speed)... and thats about it, but knowing the incredible slowness and d***headedness of the Slovak Rail, who knows when thats done :D ... Austrians wanted to deploy Taurus locos on this route once it is electrified, but since Slovaks are so fckin slow, they might deploy sth like CityJet, the ones that can run on battery on unelectrified portions

@@RailRelaxation portions of the line after Marchegg are also supposed to be eligible for highspeed service up to 200 km/h (thats also why the under and overpasses for road traffic were/are done)... at least thats what some materials say - since it is I believe the longest straight stretch of railroad in Austria... but so far havent seen any ETCS or LZB signs along the designated track (even though at some points in the video you can see signs like 220, 200 or such, but I am not sure those are future speed signs or sth else) - maybe they will do that once the whole thing is expanded to two tracks, who knows :)

As far as I heard the saftey systems on that stretch between Bratislava and Marchegg actually also use PZB cause the Cityshuttles only have PZB built in. I think the only people that need to be able to speak slovak are the guards as they make the annoucments. Tho even those im not sure if they have to.

It should get better when they finish the second track and electrify the gap. A reason to do a video once again in a year or two. This was not a 'main' line so it was less used and developed (south one to Petržalka was primary line).

Apropos gemessen (an SBB). Für die 60 km Fahrtstrecke von Wien westwärts nach St. Pölten wurden in der Erprobungsphase 13 Minuten gemessen. Im Planverkehr beträgt die Fahrtdauer aktuell 21 Minuten.

A very fine run from Wien to Preßburg. Interesting: the differences between Austria and Slovakia. But you always should write "Cab ride - Führerstandsmitfahrt" to find it more easyly for German speaking watchers. And "Gaserndorf" means "Gänserndorf", "Kledering ZBVF" is "Wien Kledering Zvbf.".
