Thanks for sharing this. In 1970, I was riding in a car, with the stereo blasting and we didn't hear the horn as we passed over a grade crossing out in the country without lights or gates. The locomotive kissed the rear corner of the car we were in and we spun 720 degrees (two full turns). Fortunately, none of us was hurt seriously. For the last 44 years, I stop, look and listen at ALL railroad crossings. I'm not trusting my, or the life of my family, to any electro-mechanical device! Once again, thank you!

When I was a kid, I had no way of entertainment besides a TV. Every day after school, I would always go to the tracks near my home, and watch as the train passes by. If there are no trains, I wait until I get bored. I sometimes pretended that I was a train, and did crazy stuff on the tracks. I loved those days.

3:29 - 3:51 -- This is not proper procedure. If your car stalls on the tracks, whether you can move it or not, go to one of the crossing gates and find the blue sign, which has an emergency number and a crossing location number. Call the number, give the location number, and tell them what's going on. The person that picks it up will communicate to the dispatcher to tell them to stop service so the problem can be fixed before sending the trains through.

If you are approaching a crossing and the signals activate, stop and enjoy the show. There is nothing better than a few minutes of unplanned railfanning. Those other cars that start making U-turns to go around just haven't learned to appreciate life's unexpected pleasures.

ive saved to kids lives who were tresspassing as an unexpected train was coming. we were staying at Lake winnapesaukee and me and my sister were on the way back from the beach. we had to cross the tracks after walking up some stairs. half way up the stairs i thought i heard a train. My sister and i doubted the train when we got to the top of the stairs i heard crossing gates(The the train makes when its heading caboose forward) i saw two 11-12 year old boys walking down the tracks. I suddenly caught a glimpse of the train through the tunnel! The boys were a good 25 yards away from us so i screamed " A trains coming!" they couldn't here me so i screamed louder and one of the boys got of the tracks the other one stayed on the side of the tracks by the end of the ties. They saw the train coming. When it was only 20 yards away they got of the tracks and walked on the board walk right next to the tracks

Once I had to trespass on railroad property. I had no choice. A train stopped, blocking the only crossing for about 1 mile. It was very hot outside. I had to walk around the train. Luckily my parent was on the other side and told me to go, since another train was not coming. I had to cross 2 sets of tracks. It was maybe 98-99 degrees outside with heat index around 105-110 degrees.

meanwhile where i live, there is a very busy CSX mainline (a railroad museum just down the line says it's an average of 30 trains a day) and there is a rail bridge across a creek. but because of a very popular beach club being pretty close to the other side of the bridge, a lot of people try to walk the bridge as a shortcut to the beach club, and they do often times leave their own trash and debris around. heck just today I was near the trackside picking up half empty beer cans many of them left behind (wearing a high visibility jacket of course, not like it does much haha). I'm honestly amazed how a drunkard hasn't yet walked right in front of a train there. Next summer tho I'll see if I could interrupt their trackside parties though haha

i would say get a safe distance from the crossing,(assuming everyone carries a cell phone now.)call the railroad emergency number first, tell them your car is broke down on the crossing tracks, give them the crossing number on the sign posted on the gate. find out when the next train is due.it may give you enough time to get the car off the tracks( pushed or moved by other means). this will also allow train dispatchers to stop the train w/o incident and safely until the track is cleared.if a crash is unavoidable get out and stay away from the crossing. if you get the stalled car off the crossing to a safe distance, i would call them back and let them know.your life is worth more than the car and to your family and pets your priceless. car can be replaced. your life can't. god only gives us one life.

good video.nothing in this life worth hurrying over the rr crossing when the train is coming and the gates down. the train usually isn't that long of a wait. maybe 2-5 mins max. when those gates come down,i'll wait. not worth getting killed over plus your family, friends and even your pets going thru a living hell trying to bury/cremate you with the vision of the train hitting the car/truck running over and over in their heads and killing you in their minds. your pets dog, cat, birds such as parrots especially asking for you ,looking for you, etc.makes it even harder to deal with. animals don't have the knowledge of their mortality like us humans do.if nothing else, just think of rover, fluffy or polly and what y'all mean to each other. our family and our pets need us and love us. as kids and adults, we have all walked on the tracks at one time or another. RR has gotten stricter about trespassing these days especially after 9/11/2001. that date has gotten fuzzy in the younger minds as of this post made by me on 2/9/2018. people on the tracks or in the yards get looked upon with close scrutiny, safety, security and terrorist concerns now. RR workers and RR police used to and probably still come down hard on kids playing on the tracks or yard. usually that and a threat to call the parents was and is now probably enough to discourage the foolishment.(the RR police will call the parents w/o exception) bottom line kids, think about how your family would feel if you were hurt or killed messing around the train tracks or yard. think about how your pets would feel if you never came home again. if that RR worker catches you, chews you out, calls mom and dad he's only looking out for your safety. listen to him. he's probably got kids at home too and thinking of that. also the RR workers, train engineers, etc. have a hard time dealing with hitting people and cars. a incident happens,it keeps running thru their heads too. they have a hard time dealing with what happened especially where people are killed or injured period. they go home to families like our own and really have a hard time coping with it.some become alcoholics, drug users and even commit suicide trying to cope with the accidents even blaming themselves.let's not make it any rougher on them but by doing what's safe and right. my post is long but my way of hoping everyone can see RR safety and doing it. again,if nothing else, just think of rover, fluffy or polly waiting on us to get home safely. i would hope the kids read my second paragraph and behave in a safe manner.

great video. The # of motorists and trains operating per day is ever increasing, thus railroad crossing accidents are going to occur at a faster rate. education is not the answer! teaching patience is.

People are too uptight about train safety. Just... people need to chill. If kids wanna smash some coins on the tracks, where's the harm? As long as they are not stupid, y'know? Just... lighten up people.

The harm is railroad tracks are dangerous places and it's private property so it's trespassing.
