Thats cool using "c" or "u" channel iron for rail, looks similar to the first steel/iron rails in the US waaaay back in the early 1800s!

My goodness !!! You must have doubled your trackage during this vid !!! ;-) Keep up the great work......although it must get very repetitive at your end.

You could prep the ties before placing them as you seam to have a set guage bar and with your shop being close by it would save your back in the long hual

Watching things like this gives me the urge to make my own set of tracks but I lack the space to make it useful, Stull fun to watch though

Super cool! Laying the track and extending the line has to feel very satisfying for you. It is satisfying to watch! Do you feel that U channel would be capable of supporting the weight of a 15" gauge 2200 lb amusement part locomotive and cars? Perhaps solid 3/4 x 2 bar would be the stronger choice. 12lb rail is insanely expensive! I still wonder about treating the ties by submerging them in a barrel of heated used motor oil. What an insanely messy process that would be......but would it be worth it in increased life?
@Redundant_Communication2 жыл бұрын
I'd go with something heavier if you have one of those amusement trains. 3/4" solid bar is good but you can still use channel sized 1"x2", which should be near the strength of 12# rail, and channel may even prove cheaper than bar depending on you local suppliers. And yeah, the ties would benefit from more treating, as these cheap garden edgers have the bear minimum of treating in them. Still for the price they hold up well enough, and no huge oil mess.
@wardsdotnet Жыл бұрын
Motor oil would be very messy choice for that and terrible for the environment, but maybe you could paint them or something at least

Would be nice with a closeup on how You fasten the rail. Also the name and measure of the material You use as rails. Very nice videos, good work! I’m about to start my project comeing weekend.😊 Best regards/ Thomas in Sweden

Rail is 1.5"x.5" channel steel. 2:38-3:25 in this video there is a detailed shot of how I hold the rail down to the ties. I discuss fastening further in some of the other videos, there are multiple methods.

Can we get some information on how much your old rails have corroded/rusted, how long they were exposed to the elements, and how the rust would affect the usefulness of the rail, if any?
@Redundant_Communication2 жыл бұрын
Before the new rail laid in the last 2 videos everything on the current line has been outside for 3 years and has not weathered appreciably, little signs of pitting or flaking. The old line was made from T-posts that had been outside for upwards of 50 years, and while considerably corroded are serviceable, only had to cut off a few inches of the deteriorated ends.

the sleeper can be made longer, there will be less waste, and by releasing the ends of the sleeper in a checkerboard pattern, you can increase the strength of the canvas, and you need a battery-powered screwdriver-wrench, in manual mode installation takes too much time ...
