Really good progress on your rail line. It looks like the old T-post rails ended up being useful after all.

Talk about building for eternity !!! Your great great grandkids will still be using that table with construction like that. It's nice to have a press to do the "bull work" instead of having to swing a large hammer like blacksmiths had to do 100+ years ago. Very interesting video.

Really nice! You are an artist/craftsman with an interesting style. You getting 3 phase from the Onan? Nat gas is reasonably priced, however the Onan diesels get even better fuel economy......IF you can find them.
@Redundant_Communication
@Redundant_Communication 8 ай бұрын
Onan diesels are definitely not common. This one can run on gasoline but I preferred to direct pipe it to the nat gas, no gumming up the carburetor. Also it's a 12-lead generator so I made up a relay box that can change the configuration to make either single or 3 phase, quite useful.

Strap rail might be worth considering if you have a comical amount of free wood. You could probably fix the snakehead issue by welding a piece at the end to hook under the wooden rail.

Rail is 1.5"x.5" channel steel. 2:38-3:25 in this video there is a detailed shot of how I hold the rail down to the ties. I discuss fastening further in some of the other videos, there are multiple methods.

Have you thought about putting a magnet on either end of your gauge bar? That should hold the rails steady while you put in the bolts
@Redundant_Communication
@Redundant_Communication 11 ай бұрын
Haven't considered it, I don't have any magnets that'd hold fast enough. I manage ok with just checking as I drive the screws

Yes to sliding anchors. Suggest fitting easily removable mats shaped to fit at the center and sides of the track then, add a layer of new ac paving to help with the transition and sloped to control drainage too. Great work!

There are equine rubber matts that can be had in the appropriate thickness that are made of recycled tires. You have to look it up though on your own. We're not allowed to paste a website I guess. Sorry to the mods.🙃

That site has had a hand in just about every project I've done! Sure I like making things from scrap but when you need that one specialty piece that no one has and you can't make, it's time to drop more money on something from McMaster.

Good job dude :) As for mounting the rail, I think having it set in concrete would make it easier to work around, especially since it is on your driveway. However, that is quite a commitment, and not something you can easily undo. My only concern would be the material that you use for the rails themselves. It is, of course, much thinner than rail used by railways and trolley lines, so I would be concerned about its longevity, especially if you don't coat it with something. The grooves might hold water (and snow, if you get it,) against the rails and rot them away faster.

Nice update. Have been flowing your channel and it brings trains and metal working which I love both. I do have one question. When you cut the flange section on the rail for sharp bends like in the frog, do you weld up that joint? I saw the cut but it didn't look like it was welded and if not I could see that as a weak point that could lead to failure with cars in the ground.
